F.m.b. Talking breaking news. We're by radio very much and I regularly talk about everything from politics to social mom stand it yeah. Yeah yeah just a heartbreaking moment I was. Out running errands and I got a news alert and I was I was parked so it said you know watch live as that news alert was happening and just as I clicked on a. President George w. Bush. Had started to speak and he got to that moment and wow just one of those moments where you know I guess we don't fully of appreciate and it's unfortunate we don't fully appreciate people off until they're gone and you know that happens with people that we know in our life that aren't famous and it also happens to public figures where you know when they're gone we look back and we end and often too we learn their contribution to society. And items that we didn't know I mean I don't know how many people we're learning about. The former president's military service. You know through all of this grieving period and that we're just anecdotally on social media that I saw that that you know they were discovering it or maybe rediscovering it and I guess that's a good thing because that's to me that's what the legacy is that it's not just of course the family that they leave behind and all of that but it is also you know their contribution to you know to society Well you know what wow the history books . Of your president is different than how popular culture you know at a at the present time one when a president or a former president is alive how they how they are viewed for example in popular culture if you look at it George Herbert Walker Bush it's really those words read my lips no new taxes right and you know you will have you know conservatives that will sit there and say well I didn't like him because you know he raised taxes and he made that promise and a lot of people have judged him on that particular thing right right what people forget is things like. The Supreme Court right he is the one Justice Alito he is the one that. Put him on the federal bench you know he attempted to put John Roberts on the federal bench it didn't happen in racial a decade later but he attempted to do that and also. Got mind like Clarence Thomas right if you're right right responsible for Clarence Thomas Yeah on the bench to look we've talked about you know from the very very beginning and you and I always go back to when we had Andrew Breitbart on the show just a couple of weeks for his death and this was. You know before the campaign in 2012 you know why should we vote for Romney but a lot of conservatives were down on Romney didn't think he was the best candidate and he. Came out and told us he said Look one thing and one thing only Supreme Court. And I've often said it. President Trump It president trumps time ended today. I would be happy. If he was a one term president and it ended today I would wish it would continue because I don't like what the option is. But if it ended today I'd sit there and say Ok. Lower taxes to Supreme Court justices right right when when you look at it because when you. Again our memories are short we forget how it was in the winter of 2016 when Scalia died. I remember doing those shows and people calling up and saying what in the world is Supreme Court going to look like because the thought process was. Number one that Scalia would be replaced immediately nobody knew what Mitch McConnell was going to do right. And I think that most people believed that there wasn't a great at that time there were this was the winter that there wasn't an incredibly great strong candidate and most people at that time did not believe that even if Trump won and it was remember it was early on in the in the primaries that have trumped one that he could ever beat Hillary Clinton. Even people that did not like Hillary Clinton many Republicans just thought he couldn't do it. You and I remember that day and we remember what happened the weeks and the months afterwards well maybe not months because at that point Mitch McConnell came out said no not going to you know sorry doesn't happen in. You know this year or so which by the way was also to me kind of frightening because it left it open I mean keep in mind there was some point of 20 percent chance he was going to win. But I looked at the possibility and said you know where we're we're having the debate about Merrick Garland in the process surrounding the nomination but this is a very different situation if Hillary wins who knows who she might nominee and if the. If the if the Senate goes the way of the Democrats I mean. The question was well. I guess be careful what you wish for I guess would be the advice at that point that it kept ringing in my head over and over again because I didn't not that I wanted Merrick Garland to be seated but again if Hillary won. That it could have been someone even you know further to the left and you know we forget that the leadership that was needed at that time as the Berlin wall was coming down you know you it was remember the I remember watching that happening and it's funny because it seems like you talk to anybody to the Berlin Wall and maybe if you're our age or my age I don't know about people that might be 10 years younger but if you grew up during the Cold War. And you look at that time and it was unbelievable because it happened so quickly and he did provide international leadership with America being the leader during that you know during that time in our history and so. Again popular culture you judge him by. My lips no new taxes writing capsule aides his entire presidency. And as we've said there's. And that's why we don't get into the the back and forth that everybody else seems to be getting into or. The minutia of the of the insults going back and judging somebody in absolute terms. You know we tend to talk more issues than personalities on this show other people can talk personalities and and that's fine we also look at a presidency and say Ok let's let's not in caps play the entire presidency on just that particular thing even though I think it was wrong for doing it for backing off right and saying no you know. No new taxes and then backing off on it I thought it was the wrong move to do with that that point and it did seem like Alan Simpson yesterday was attempting to justify that it was the right thing even at the funeral I let that go though because he wasn't I don't think he was trying to do it from that he was just saying you know we need a lot of leadership because as a Republican to raise taxes after he said it he knew he was dead was the point that there was trying to use and he still did it because he believed it was the right thing to do look. We've all disagreed with family members on politics. It doesn't mean that they're not great people right and solid people and that's what we you know you want I want to focus on that we sort of stay away during all funerals to the back and forth and the pettiness that goes on we'll go back and we'll talk about the issues and history will look at President Bush and I think we'll probably look at him. Pretty favorably because you know it was the American president when you're a saw you know the whole reason you know the result of the downfall of of the the Soviet Union and the downfall of the Eastern Bloc countries then the Berlin Wall coming down and and even on. Iraq you don't even hear that as much anymore even in popular culture it you know it would be it would be viewed and again when you look at we tend to look at things. Not we tend to look at things day by day whatever happens today is what happens today and anything that influenced it yesterday or might be important as it goes on it was in the news yesterday has no bearing on what happened today we're going to get it almost with with tunnel vision. Look at Iraq right now. Because pretty pretty stable and you can go into you know and you look look at the the deaths of thousands of Americans that eventually happen over that entire period of time but what we look at it and say Ok because you and I had said this We both agreed with us that if you're going to go in to try to defeat somebody in the Middle East you've got to be in for the long term right and really in any culture like that you've got to be in for the long term you're. We're still there. And that's just the reality if you wish to change a culture because you don't change a culture when you defeat them you change a culture generations down or people become used to freedom and liberty and if you're going to be a part of taking that country down you need to understand that you're in for the long term but when you look back a 100 years ago and if the Middle East which in all likelihood we have said they will have to assimilate into a more Western society just for economic reasons and you see the push you take away the assassination with the Saudi prince but you see even in that hardline country there's a realisation we can't survive unless we modernize right and so when you look at it overall 100 years from now and look back when the history books look at it they could they there's a great chance to look at it and say that was really the beginning of the change in the Middle East. But we don't know that at the time you don't know these things it's like we didn't know what was going to happen after the. Immediate end of World War 2 nobody knew what was going to happen at that particular time there was a great uncertainty at that particular point now we look at Europe now we look at Germany now we look at Japan Think about that right. Completely totally modern Western societies the United States responsible for that. So and then we look at you know the popular culture I don't think the history books well but the popular culture it's less now but it was big even 101520 years ago that thought process well we should have dropped the atomic bomb that stayed around for a little bit and then that sort of disappeared because that's sort of the pop culture in the decades following something but as you get to you know 50 years 60 or 70 years 80 years 100 years out the history books look at it differently and I think the history books will look at President George Herbert Walker Bush quite favorably I think so no I just remember being I was a news director at a small station and getting the dossiers for both Michael Dukakis and the vice president at the time who was running for president. George h.w. Bush and. The difference between the 2 was pretty staggering and I thought to myself you know people who I guess were able to see all of that you know back then we didn't there wasn't the Internet in order to research all. That's really if you think about it there were 2 things you had to basically take what the media effect you which is what 99 percent of the people would do or you were really had to work at it in order to I mean you would have to go back and find old newspaper articles and you know and I mean you would have to go to a library and really work in order to put that Ossie together and how many times I remember when I 1st got to talk show hosts can tell me times I would go to the library and go to the mike yes go to the microfilm to round out you know to look for old newspaper articles about that think about the you had to do and now you can do it while you're standing in line at the grocery store wait a minute nobody stands in line of the grocery store because we suspect while you know your car and not driving and looking at your phone you can sit there and I mean you don't even have to touch your phone you can say Ok Go go wait a minute let's listen for everybody's phone to go go off Ok Go go and then you can ask your phone a question and get an immediate answer about anything but but the point is that there's this wealth of information this is what I think is is sad in so many ways we have this wealth of information to really learn the truth and more and more we seek to be as John McNamara would say be asked. We seek to look away from the facts that support something or the history and this was going back again he was vice president. And running for president at that time and remember Reagan for those kids out there Reagan was not I mean it was very divisive in the eighty's. There Reagan was not popular he was evil he was the bad guy at the time George Herbert Walker Bush was he was even even worse day I mean really day because I remember there was someone who had some cartoonists or Illustrator had done this drawing depiction of George h.w. Bush sitting beside a hospital bed and Ronald Reagan in that hospital bed on life support and the question being asked do we want this guy to be president if something happens and then of course in 88 he ran and again became the big evil at the time you know people back then had to work and had to find out the truth regardless of what your politics were the you know people judge I mean very very very quickly and in today's world you have more access to the truth and people ignore it you can learn about the whether you agree or disagree you can respectfully do that but we choose not to do that it was pretty interesting and you I think everybody smiled when you saw the president and all the x. Presidents. In that front row yeah that picture went viral while you're in the service of the book and of. Hillary on the one hand. And Trump on the other end and when he caved in and he just wouldn't look at you know what a soap opera that is wow we've got a great show ahead 86690 right I coming up with Hillary Mike tomorrow and every Carly Detroit radio.
