This is the whole show powered by p.c. Energy I know the. Guy is not. Going for the most part you're right but. Welcome welcome 2nd hour of the whole show rolls on here on this Wednesday afternoon it's kind of like Christmas Eve you know we've got a lot of big time football teams getting set for practice tomorrow as well as the Broncos Hall of Fame game so we're there you know we're not regular season mode yet but we're certainly they're on to talk with us now the voice of the Colorado buffalos Mark Johnson Mark always I love having you on the last time around I'm excited to announce that you're going to be on with us so once a week talking all things Colorado I have no idea what you're going to ask me once a week. You know I love I follow you on social media and it's just an honor because I'm always I'm always jealous of your posts you have your You're always in the absolutely most beautiful landscapes market how do you find the right spot every time it it makes me so sad I can't get I'll do that. Quite a bit just in the northeast Utah last week doing a 100 miles or spec ride so I drive a sneaker really wish you would think that I am putting up a retaining wall the kind of stuff out there about myself and what you're used to go to the show you know I'd love to say yes but I feel like I get out there in 5 minutes into it I realize I don't have I don't I can't keep up anymore I couldn't do that so I want to mark I'm jealous like I said but no my friend you one of the hardest working guys out there and we're just it's an honor to be able to have you on the program each and every week and I I think it's going to be I know I maybe I'm in the minority here but I think it could be kind of a much improved season for those Colorado buffalos Well we certainly also have a new coach a lot of excitement surrounding that you've got a real lot of reasons to be optimistic you've got you know maybe the best player in college football of institutional put his team you've got I think is probably your only doing general talked about this is the end of last year I think. This is the deepest receiving corps that Colorado maybe it has ever had in history and I know there are some stretches reassume some phenomenal athletes but top to bottom when you're talking about going 6789 guys deep and wide receiver and then you have the one guy like you mention it might be as good as it is out of the country and then you know throw a 5th your quarterback a 3rd your starter and Stephen Monta as you hope you plays that way and I think there's a lot of reasons to be optimistic you know Mark in our poll question today we're we're talking about the quarterbacks we kind of focus on here on the program and that's Colorado at c.s.u. This u.n.c. Even Jacob name calling will see the Monta as our poll questions asking Hey who do you think is going to be that guy that quarterback has a better chance of being an n.f.l. Caliber quarterback and me honestly just the eye test again not getting the closer examination is nearly like what you do in some of our other insiders than I do think that it's a guy like Stephen Montecito Well he's got everything I mean he looks the part you know he's 6 foot 464 and a half roughly used to 225 pounds 230 pounds he's got a cannon for an arm he was at the Manning camp before last season and a friend of mine who was down there covering that called me and said hands down the best arm in camp alone Stephen Bartos So he's got all the physical tools the previous He was doing what he's been taking the physical ability and then translating that into the mental decision making and you know they work so hard with him the last couple of years trying to help him with that I would say there's been a growing up around El Paso and West Texas you know he was such a big strong athletic guy he got out after lead virtually everybody that he played against and so I think along with that then comes probably a kind of a slow the learning curve from a quarterback standpoint terms of decision making and so that's been something that has not been natural to him but I think he's had he's had to evolve and develop over the course of time and when that happens because he's got all the physical tools really runs well enough he's got over 800 yards rushing in his career he's got nearly 7000 yards passing and 50. Some of touchdowns I mean the numbers are fantastic and so when he's able to translate all of that into the mental aspect of quarterback I think that's when he can be special and listen from a college sample and this is his last chance to I mean he's a 5th year senior there's going to be a lot put on here but I think the the office of system that Mel was putting on takes a little off his plate in terms of the X.'s and O's but from a mental standpoint you know he's got a full plate if you will going into his 5th year senior season now so I expect really big thinkers even on test joining us on the hotline presented by management Mark Johnson the voice of the Colorado Buffaloes and that's an interesting spot you talk about the pressure well he's going to do it with the new coach Mel Tucker certainly getting a feel for this team over the last couple of months and and will be and I'm excited Saturday l.c. Out there Saturday will get a chance to hear but practice starts up tomorrow for this team and so Montana's has as as everybody does on this team on this roster there's there's that transition period that obviously Tucker's hoping can go very quickly so they can get ready for the game on August 30th Well I think what they do they try to speed things up in spring ball a little bit to try and try to eat up some of that learning curve if you will of it I don't think it is a pretty good job of that but maybe more so than learning a new system was understanding what a new staff wants and that every time a new coach comes in there's a change in culture so Bellville talkers try to install his culture and instill his culture within the players you know there was a number of guys that after spring ball departed and maybe thought themselves this is not one of you part of the one thing that Mel made very clear after every single practice and you know they get the team together and they all walk out Sandoz divel has to say if the message is very clear this is the standard period there is nothing to go shovel about that you're going to be either playing at that level and doing what is required of you from your position standpoint or you're not going to be part of this and if you don't want to be I you know you saw the guys that I haven't seen a couple guys with you know want to be part of this find out what I can. Hold it against you but you know this is what it's going to be so if you can't do this maybe you should be part of this deal and so he's made that very clear this team and I think Stephen and all those guys have learned that over the course of spring ball the off season conditioning in and what and that's the game is going to be I think killed once again at the very same spot going in through the fall Cabo starting tomorrow when you when you look at the differences of culture and again we're in the early parts of this but you've certainly seen in another you talk to the coaches you talk to these players when you when you look at the culture what are those things that maybe sticks out to you Mel Tucker compared to last year in and over the last few years with Mike McIntyre Well also this that I'm not sized up your question to me the answer that question to you something I'll be able to tell you in 12 months or 18 months what you see with coaches and in doing this for 30 some years and having no voices of various teams or programs around the country what you see from a successful program is a consistency what you see when things don't go well is when that bar is moved and there's no consistency in what you're be asking for you know when you set the bar very high spot which every coach does when he 1st came into a program that's a very difficult position to get to and you've got to you know the work of the sacrifice and all things we talk about gets you to that level maintaining that is very difficult because human nature is I'm going to get tired and I don't want to do that I'm tired of this and coaches in that are very good they continue to hold the line there and I you know I've said this for years I think I think you know there's I go around to the a priest the guys all the time about about being a man of integrity and being a parent those kind of things and holding that line anybody was apparently going to you know it's not easy to hold that line after a while your teenagers wear you out like I want to do and I'll think about having 75 or 85 or 95 of those guys who are testing the limits on them all 'd the time and so that's why I say it's a long term I answered your question because in my sense is Mel's got a guy that it the bar said he's not going to but you know no matter what. Yeah and in like you said there's a lot and in this day and age there's more and more every single year you have to you have to coach I mean we've talked about I think you and I talked about social media just kind of the way of the world now there are certainly more distractions to have to can a combat against and that's what a head coach in college football is also asked to do so when you look at that last season I simplify it Mark I do that sometimes I'm looking at 2018 and I see wow this is a good team maybe a softer schedule to beginning the season then they just hit a wall they still had some competitive games but when you look at that do you look and say because the players take ownership which I think is a bizarre really big thing going into the season when you look at Dad season do you think well there just just was a truly was a shift leadership we just needed that the most because maybe the talent is there to have a successful year well I think what happens when when you get him is many times as I've covered coaching changes my career you know it doesn't surprise anybody it doesn't sneak up on anybody you can kind of see can feel it coming right and that begins to build a that that's part of what we talk about distractions from the outside affecting the inside and then will begins to happen and listen if you've ever been to work at some place where you kind of felt that that maybe there was a change coming at some point every month starts going to the idea of well it's going to take care Myal gotta gotta watch out for me right now because obviously this thing is kind of on you know it's teetering or shaky ground there might be a change coming and so human nature kind of leaves you with that so I think with your saw a season like last season or the 1st ever been around one of those when things begin to teeter and things begin to be tough go back to what we talked about the previous question if there has been in the chest thread where that bar is set at one accountability means and then all sudden I'm start questioning whether this thing long term is going to be around and we start looking out for number one and all the sudden that foundational I think underground begins to to shake and eventually chrome a little bit I think that's what you saw to. I've seen that happen with many teams of programs over the course of various seasons over the course of over 3 decades doing just what it starts to go it's awful tough to get it turned around I think we just saw that that moment to get rolling downhill last year yeah absolutely joining us on that hotline presented by advantage bank the voice of the Colorado buffalos Mark Johnson. Looking at the some people put a lot of stock into preseason ranking Some people know and some people are kind of in the middle of the road the buffs they didn't they're not getting a lot of respect nationally for sure finishing at the bottom portion of the Pac 12 South What do you think is that fair or is it a little too harsh or because I know they were picked and finished I think last a few years back and they they kind of did the unthinkable milling to the Pac 12 back to conference championship Well I answered 3 ways never one to agree with that do I think us will finish you know do I think it's fair it's probably fair from the outside you just go back to we were just talking about it was a team that that started $5.00 and $1.00 ended a Win 7 had the whole thing fall apart had a coaching regime change of a new staff coming in there's a lot of unknown You've Got Mail talk although he did have 5 games as interim head coach at the Jacksonville the n.f.l. He's never been a full time head coach and so there's all kinds of questions you know what he's used to look like how is he going on full It's not so much essentially you know I try not to get too wound up you know fans will go to the 1st game I got all kinds of messages Brady What are people thinking about yeah yeah you know what in it fans are awesome because it was we were a fan of the program or a team we see with our hearts not with our eyes right sure and so from the outside everyone's looking at this and saying what a widow in 7 out of stretches totally fell apart coaching change a lot in those we don't know what this is you know you're not you know actually when you're with the base it on to be honest with you and so I think it's easy to put Colorado at the bottom of the pack will self do I think they're going to finish their No I don't because me getting inside of this program and going through some of the stuff we just talked about what Bill's done from a recruiting standpoint it kind of the way you soldiering this thing along in the end in setting the bar where. We talked about I think there are reasons to believe this will not be a last policed place team in the south so is it fair from the outside that probably is to agree with the absolute not and we'll get to know is that as you're joining us weekly will start looking at these upcoming games will start putting more focus on that Rocky Mount showdown I'm excited for that one and boy September 7th that game might be kind of fun to talk about I don't know but when you look at these other guys you mention Levinsky tional I'm excited to see what Nate Landman can do on the defensive side I see some in a felt talent to not just the money you talked about live as he should on perhaps the most electrifying perhaps the best prospect of college football player going into the season there's some guys here Martin I think could really take that next step and we'll be talking about them putting in meaningful reps for an n.f.l. Team very soon there's no doubt about it you know we'll get to the next one I mean you mentioned was a higher regard of the 2 coming out of the sort of high school with the Levesque Oh I think he's a difference maker a wide receiver I think the young running backs that got I think Alex was no he's probably the leader in the clubhouse because early on in the running back position playing time will be determined by who understands and who can execute protection for Stephen to when they need that so that's going to be will determine early all to play there's some guys in there running back why they're going to be electrifying to watch I think that's a fun position I'm interested to see the tight end position for the 1st time I've read what you think about it when I 1st got here to the games now this will be my 16th season so 15 years ago when I got here they had quintuple new city and the joke was Cyber to n.f.l. Tight and since that time the n.f.l. Or the rather the time to position has virtually been nonexistent for Colorado that's not going to be the case it's upcoming season I think that's going to be fun to watch I think what Mel's done to bring you guys into the office of a defensive front group will be interesting to watch I think they've got Taylor going to have a a fantastic year and outside linebacker I think you know he got here and he was such a raw prospect even though he was the number one junior college linebacker coming out a year ago he's. I didn't know what he didn't know I think it's a great athlete but he's just learning the game of football I think the switch has gone on for him and so he understands what he's trying to with you know so I think there's a lot of things go before the launch of much of a lamb and I I think he says final linebackers is going to be in the pack well maybe the country I think he is a unique talent I think he's a stink I think that guy's going to put up some By the time it's all said and done what you think of the phenomenal linebackers the Bundeswehr word winters ago but it was there and I think he might be you know talked about the same breath as a lot of those guys because I do think he's that special and so yeah there's a lot of aspects of Favre to be fun to watch and I am I don't think I could get more excited but you're get me there Mark definitely I'm pumped up I can't wait for this season and I'll be out there Saturday this will be my 1st prefers to experience with the c.u. Media Day involved so I maybe just for hope you don't mind a little guy following your around because I know you're not going to help him well we're just going to give a cold drink of what you got and I consider that one done absolutely Markel by the way Happy Labor Day right a birthday message yesterday so congrats on that. And all right that's like you know you see the little girl was over to see if you feel old my sis we heard legislatively warrantees ward off.
