Listen every year we around July 5th between June 14th which is Flag Day and July 4th which is I believe same Patrick's Day I don't know if it's Independence Day Yes you know and that was my 2nd guess Ok between Flag Day and July 4th right I do a dramatic reading of a book that I wrote for children of all ages Yeah and it is called. Yankee Doodle Mugsy. It's the 2nd book in the mugs series illustrated by Tim Raglan Tim Raglan is by the way genius Yeah a peevish ornery genius and he is no he said he's you know if you listen to your friend I hope not he's easy dear friend but no he's so talented and his illustrations are I almost said mouthwatering they're not mouthwatering but they're kind of like eye watering like you look at them and you're just stung with the beauty it's a stinging kind of you just wow and because their eyes yeah they're going and so basically he and I wrote the the Christmas book which is called. Uncle mugs in the terrible twins of Christmas and then we said hey what about writing want to celebrate the 4th of July and we did yeah and it's called Yankee Doodle Mugsy So in the next segment I'm going to be doing a dramatic reading. Oh it's going to get dramatic folks very dramatic it's very dramatic we're going to have water balloon fight and we have face painting and bobbing for how it's going to crazy here it's a fair it's crazy so I'm going to read I'm going to do dramatic reading of. Yankee Doodle Mugsy in just a moment you know I want to prep people to understand what they're going to be listening to you know they're going to be listening to me doing a dramatic reading of Yankee Doodle monkey Now will you be moving you know around with your body you know why you're doing it in the studio Well the poetry of my writing is such that you cannot stand still. Even if you want to you as an addict you will twitch at the very least you will twitch and some people get facial tics that don't go away for like a week but know that here's this is true Yankee Doodle Mugsy it's it's very patriotic obviously and you know what I can read Tim Ragland's where I should say if you want to order a copy of the book you can go to Tim Ragland's website I think you'd probably get it other places but I would recommend getting it from him but it's him Raglan dot com and it's. R e g l i n tim Raglan dot com But the book it this is what it says on the web page it says after the double happy ending of Uncle mugs in the terrible twins of Christmas we find Mugsy happily married to Margaret dog Mont and father figure to the twins the family is celebrating the 4th of July when who should arrive unannounced but Mugsy English mother in law Lady Hortensia she's come to make proper Englishman of the twins over mugs he's dead body that is the patriotic. Than patriotic comic verse by bestselling author Eric Metaxas will delight you and might also bring a tear to your eye. Now I have to say that it says that this cloth bound hardcover $22.00 right now it says $9.00 inches by $10.00 inches that is totally wrong the book is huge I have no idea. I'm going to contact him the book is huge it's literally like it's got to be. Like 16 inches tall it's huge and it's cord it's like a coffee table book so this is it's just absolutely gorgeous I want to say this but a minute I'm going to do dramatic reading of it but I have to back in case you don't know the story just so you have some sense of what you're listening to. Is a bulldog and he loves his country and he used to be a bachelor bulldog kind of like a w.c. Fields character like kind of a big guy and he lived in a in a house like in a mansion with a man servant but learning peeves and anyway at the end of the 1st story he gets married to Margaret dog amont which is kind of like Margaret Dumont from the Marx Brothers films and she and they kind of adopt the twins these cute little bulldog parties that are so cute Be careful it's that it's doubt level of cute it's very cute and so in the sequel Mugsy now is he's not the curmudgeon that he once was he wants to celebrate the holiday of July 4th and but his his British mother in law shows up and she's not into July 4th she doesn't like that holiday nobody knows why but she's very British and she decides to have the kids you know like have music lessons and horse track riding lessons where she doesn't want them to celebrate at the at the 4th of July parade anyway it's pretty kooky and so I'm going to read it in a moment it's going to be very dramatic reading but I want to say this that it starts out. Listen my children and you shall hear of. The something ride of old Mugsy deer you know it's it's yeah you know it's an echoing fellow of Paul Revere's right now Henry much was Longfellow's of the 1st the 1st part of it goes on in that vein. It might not have as be as good as as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as great poem but I can tell you this much he didn't get to Miranda until a straight his poem so that's you know we've had Tim on the show and he has an interesting story and it was fun having him on and hearing about how you guys worked on these things together back in the day when you were young starting ordinary rich children yeah I know but but seriously this book it's huge I don't know why I'm not getting the website says like that's just wrong because it's he it's the book is huge Yeah like a like a gigantic beautiful I mean it's like the kind of thing you'd think would be like $48.00 I'm not kidding you when you see it people are always you know see when you look out or whatever is beautiful but it's but it's beautiful and it's incredibly patriotic and it's you can go to Tim Raglan dot com If you're interested in in checking it out but I just want to say so in a few minutes we're going ever and you will reading of Yankee Doodle Mugsy own By the way speaking of patriotism. And now Yankee Doodle Mugsy read by me the author Eric Metaxas and the book is by Eric Metaxas and Tim Raglan and it's dedicated to the children of the American Revolution past present and future. Only Listen my children and you shall hear of the 4th of July and old Mugsy dear a greater patriot could near be found and hardly a man is now around who doesn't remember that Samus day and cheer on that hallowed day of our nation's birth Mugsy our hero once more proved his worth protector of Margaret his beloved new wife and family and have a cock in their happy new life the morning began with the children's game I was there as a witness in the truth I proclaimed and just for the record peeves is my name. Just stares now he nods children still sleep there during the approach and inside now creep. Here yet. You're going Mugsy I feel my nephew your uncle sam and is the 4th of July I. Just days a young. Dream like the day when flags and rockets fell I. Must see what it was and call again just. I am that Mugsy. Then down the hall of history they marked our freedoms trail as Mugsy named the noble names George Washington Thomas Jefferson Nixon Hale and told how as one the framers answered liberty sweet call by making their great Declaration of Independence Hall and he told how Betsy Ross in haste the Stars and Stripes unfurled and how Lexington and Concord was the shot heard round the world then he told of the winter of the troops who camped at Valley Forge and how their stoic sacrifice in Pennsylvania's snow and ice defeated old King George. The bare $3.00 and Amy let's make a joyful noise and say where the star spangled children called our goal setting and to make our freedom bell ring. Let's cut a Yankee Doodle to take her. To our founding father. Let's recite some Tell her it's a poetry a good poem and the free and the good. But in the midst of their festive song the downstairs door bell China. And so they left off their fighting and drumming the British they giggled are coming they're coming . One of my lap 2 of my knee and I'll dust the bannister Mugsy cried we and so down the handrail a flying they came and made such a scene in the hall at the bottom they discharged as though from a gun with Mugsy a great cannon ball. For Mugsy in crashing head smashed all to bits some luggage there piled all around he'd assault. The ramparts of civilized taste in a single opening balance and then from that wreckage she looked up to see that English Medusa that Gorgon that ghoul it was Margaret's mother she had come an announced a one woman finishing school Gad and there She glowered jealously So the crim grimly proper for teaching the children to fall again with a cold conversation stopper that's not it at all groaned Mugsy You see I was teaching the twins of our history I see what you're teaching them Ambrose she snipped most he winced at that name painfully in England she went on when Victoria was Queen we'd have music then riding then t. . But great on over 10 c. Of the children now piped today is the 4th of July the parade starts at 4 months he said and what's more the colors of freedom will fly what nonsense she sniffed and declared in summation the 4th of July is merely a day for proper education and true to whose word without thought for the day she commenced her campaign in the British way. While the twins were put through their proper paces their thoughts could be seen on their sad little faces they'd missed the parade and the fireworks too with their dear uncle Mugsy somehow come through mighty yet save them from this hopeless to do who knew and what could he do as promised 1st music and Hortensia would sing have a Kuks new violin pop to string to the tick of the metronome crisply kept time as the 2 of them saw it on and on what a crime all free you thought Mugsy just give me some time a question in training was next on the list Emily's pony jumped 1st and missed. The crowded and cantered and how bold and hopped Hortensio. Enthusiasm never stopped but most painful of all was the deep crimson hue of their traditional horsey attire red coats on the force this is war Mugsy cried with patriotic fire and by far the worst insult to that sacred game in town or the brave in the free was that starting at 4 with Hortensius friends they would sell for English High tea by gad free said Mugsy I'll save them I will put some red white and blue rocketry. I'll remind them of all of our great battles of your I'll show them once more who it was won that war on this day of our great liberty can soon he'd returned with the annual barrel full of crackers and candles and bombs a true Bunker Hill of explosives that was a gunpowder mountain of forms to arrange them like Minutemen ready to fight he stood them behind rocks and trees they were serpents in spinners and sparklers and snaps there were mortars and missiles and whistles and caps it would bring the red coats to their knees with a bang crack boom of the battle at last had begun to check now ended the sipping now ceased the ladies were classically out of their seats and the twins were last having fun they say I can see her conceited players mix the bombs bursting bright in the rockets red glare clear out to the ladies of the bend in the field laid back and thank you for genius real. Still and the Liberty Bell. The final was won the day was now done I had hoped we might cease and desist but it wasn't to be for now giddy with glee $2.00 to $4.00 mugs he couldn't resist for there yet was one rocket of red and blue they called it Big Martha for Washington's pride the match now he struck the fuse now he lit but the missile took off with deer Mugsy astride. How high or the tree tops like Lindbergh he flew. The world grew more distant as father he zoomed and Margaret Hortensia the children and I all knew in our hearts that poor Mugsy was doomed shades of Victor as Mark Mugsy a turn for the hearse victory wasn't supposed to be this hard it puts me in mind of that line from the bard I've been hoisted by my own petard ard drat. But fortune to smiled upon Mugsy that day the bomb though it flew was a miserable dud it fell and it fell through the clouds to the ground and fizzled and crashed in some mud and when the smoke cleared how Mugsy rejoiced his life had been spared and the day was yet young and to top it all off he'd been given a mule and now to his main Mugsy clung on the word Bucephalus word he cried Will catch that parade by the tail if we must the Republic depends on us so do the twins hi ho Yankee doodle or bust now swiftly Kalak and spread the good cheer to every village and farm far and near awaking the citizens of Harken and here America's birthday is here is here America's birthday is here. Or anywhere on the parade all solemn and grave said Margaret the twins were conceived to they come out to sea but for sadness or not it was what Muncie would have wanted to do but the low in the distance came a cry of a hue twas a mule hastening toward us in red white and blue and atop that old mule flying Felix and fleet a path that's which speed racing down our main street is that a fanciful thought quite familiar somehow and Happy birthday America was rich upon his brow. In the mule he stopped short in the rider thrown Mugsy landed and made his identity known he lay battered and blackened with many a wound a good host cried Hortensia and swooned. You come back they all shouted her Ra you are alive of course Mugsy laughed I'm just sir from the ride in each twin took an arm to help him to stand he lifted Old Glory and gave the command Let's join the parade Mugsy cried fall in line the fights pierced the air and the drum. Marked a time in the air in the afternoon swelled with their song it rose to the heavens till marching along was another parade field heroes of the. Story before but others we have now we see. This. Yankee Doodle to all all. About the future. And. What they know God wants them to be and what they are. Doesn't feel the weight of a separation between what they should be and what they actually are in so many ways and if you're going to wait on the sidelines until your god wants you to be because you don't want to step out and serve God with the way that you will experience. Your life. And you can hear more from the series called I Am. Such a walk in the. There's a lot more. To . See its tracks. Next thing you know the night is already been. Seen just quickly in the putting. Green Room. On the block. Just a little to see your taxes show city with Chris times were just hanging out they were that dramatic reading took so much out of me I look at me look at them dripping with Swear mass get it together like I should but that poem is just so patriotic Yeah and you know even though I say I wrote it and I did write it Tim Raglan was with me the whole time like I didn't just go off and write it by myself he was with me planning the book and thinking about what we wanted to say you know so in some sense he's a co-writer short of a very tiny thing yeah yeah no that's not true he's really that is true not in the residual sense but in the that's right that's right but but the fact of the matter is it is true that we we really wrote it together even though I kind of wrote the words the story and you know or I would I mean it's true collaboration like I'd come up with a line and he would say or you know like he would say what about this one of the written so even though I'm very much the writer of it I know I couldn't have done it without his help you know that's of just a fact we should get him back on sometime soon talk about you know how is the latest book is going on he's he's vulnerable he vulnerable Yeah yeah yeah yeah to know that that that's that the curse of cat and common Well yeah see that there is you know it said his website that's right if you go to Tim Raglan dot com It's t i a m r a g l i n dot com He's one of my favorite people in the world he's an amazing guy and a friend for a long long time super talented but you can check out his work and I recommend it but the reason we wrote Yankee Doodle Mugsy. It was because we really believe that people need to understand it's important to celebrate Independence Day it's important to be patriotic and understand the meaning of the holiday and so we wrote this for kids obviously but clearly this is an issue that that doesn't go away for me ever at my book if you can keep it for the same reason and it's really it's funny because when I think of how many years passed between the 2 by the time I wrote if you can keep it I understood how little most people including myself up until the point of writing the book how little most Americans really understand about what we have our freedoms and how many people in other countries are just suffering horribly simply because they don't have anything that can compare to our form of government they they just don't have it some people and unfortunately the prevailing currents will will say that no this country was never great if you you know rip the Band-Aid are you know rip the carpet up or whatever and look underneath it yeah I've got this awful underbelly but the truth is we are very lucky to be alive here in this country you know it's not perfect it's worth you know as I was actually going to say it's funny because I didn't tell you but I was going to bring of Hillsdale College because we're doing a thing with them if you by the way if you go to my Web site Metaxas Talk dot com the radio Web site you can see or I think you can go to Metaxas for Hillsdale dot com If you go to Metaxas for him but if you go to my Web site attacks on both clicks on both but the reason I bring up Hillsdale College is because. They have not bought into this fashionable narrative of the last 40 or so years that keeps putting America down they understand it of course anything comprised of human beings is going to have problems because we're all sinners We're all broken but to understand what is the good the true and the Beautiful and to appreciate what is good and true beautiful in this country is very important especially if you call yourself an American to really understand what the roots of this. What this the roots of this country are on the ideals of this country are because. There is no country but America that is an idea where an idea of liberty of self-government and if all Americans don't understand what that idea is we become American name only we can we can only truly be Americans to the extent that we understand those ideas because you have to buy into those ideas it's not about being part of an ethnic group it's being part of a group of people that say we're going to govern ourselves we're going to do this thing and so I obviously write about it in my book if you can keep it but part of that has to do with this idea of appreciating the narrative of America the story of America the ideas that the founders had because these are unique in world history you can't say well it's just as good as this other thing it is that there is no other thing and the founders did not say well you know this is this can only happen on these shores they they created this idea which any sincere American wishes that we could share these ideas with the whole world we want the whole world to be free we want the whole world to understand what freedom is what self-government is this these are ideas that I would argue are for everybody not just for Americans and all the founders understood that that's why when you talk about American exceptionalism you're not saying that we are inherently better right because we're just the same as anybody else in the world but these ideas which did not originate with us right you Chris and I we did not come up with these ideas we cannot take credit for it and nobody living today came up with these ideas these have been bequeathed to us and so it's only by God's grace that we get to be here and get to live in a country that was formed by these ideas and these ideals but the fact of the matter is that it's our obligation to share these things with the world because these ideas are the greatest ideas their terms of government and ravening they are exceptional they are except you know by the way they create a place that people will literally you know risk their lives to come and live it I mean you know you're nobody's brain you're now only in my family Yeah you know we didn't start here we came here yeah and so there's a reason people come here. So I just want to say you know go Well 1st of all check out the Hillsdale website it because that's what they teach at Hillsdale and that's on my website Metaxas Talk dot com And I also want to say that when we come back I'm going to have a conversation with Justin Brierly Justin Brierly is the host of a podcast named unbelievable he talks to atheists all day long on this podcast and has wonderful conversations he has these when and where they send things in British English and you'll see anyway it's fantastic will be raw 8 back. I'm talking to somebody who also comes now or who lives now on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean just as Patil or Clark does his name is Justin Brierly He's the author of a book called unbelievable he is the host of podcast and a radio show on premier Christian radio in the u.k. That is also called unbelievable the whole thing is unbelievable and he's on the phone right now Justin welcome but as we know Eric it's always with put inflection at the end yeah believe about us the question mark did now what do you call it you call it a question mark or an in into rocket to something like just a question oh I'm so happy I'm so so that is something that we can that we can agree on so it's unbelievable but these you have just come out with a book you've been for 10 years talking to to people on the radio program which is called unbelievable and you talk about issues of faith and you debate atheists and so on and so forth and that's called unbelievable but you've just come out now with a book with the same title in fact the full title is unbelievable why after 10 years of talking with atheists I'm still a Christian so the time of the book is unbelievable why after 10 years of talking with atheism still a Christian this is that's pretty extraordinary because I think a lot of people are afraid if they talk to atheists too much to lose their faith but you've been doing this for over 10 years and you actually say it strengthened your faith Yeah I'd say that the amazing thing is that a lot of Christians I think do react out of fear and that just they just run away on average you know from having these kinds of conversations because that worried that either that that faith though that would be showed up in some way or whatever it might be but that she. You kind of have to have a few wins along the way you have to kind of you know get a few knocks in order to I think get a tough fight you know it's the way that we temper metal is by bang bang around and ultimately we get a tough stronger fight I think by going through a few of those battles selves and in the course of doing the show I've always been the neutral moderator of these discussions I've always had a Christian and then I just you know with me or perhaps someone of another faith and that and I'm if you like just offering the questions and trying to move the discussion along but in writing this book I've really taken off that neutral motor right to cap and said Ok I've heard all of these arguments to and fro now I'm going to tell you why I think Christianity still makes best sense of life the universe and everything well that's interesting now I see that on the on the cover of the book unbelievable you have a blurb from none other than Timothy Keller the Reverend Jim Keller he says believers and nonbelievers and the many in between will be helped by this book now Tim Keller never gives blurbs very nearly very rarely gives blurbs So that's a big deal and then forward of the book is written by none other than Allister McGrath who is a great Christian apologist in his own right at Oxford University so well the thing is that I've been privileged to meet so many brilliant Christian thinkers over the years doing the show and so both of us to McGrath and Tim Calla by being on the show as Christian guest engaging with skeptics and I guess and so while that's been given me the chance to do is obviously develop friendships with these guys and and obviously I've come back to that one of wanted an endorsement or a forward for the book but I mean to tell you the example of Tim Keller just a wonderful mind such an eloquent speaker but also so gracious in the way he brings things across you know it's no wonder they call him the pasta to the skeptics in Manhattan because whenever he's been on the program interacting with a nonbeliever. So is a wonderful example of how to do that with graciousness and respect and the last time he was on he was talking about his his latest book and and again he was in conversation with a skeptical eye theist and he was just able to gently privately say look there is some inconsistency in your position you know you believe in human rights you believe in all these wonderful things that we buy say a wonderful but your atheism doesn't really allow you to have a strong purchase on that in the way that my Christian faith does and I think when you have those kinds of conversations with a non-Christian it actually opens up someone like Tim Keller to a whole new range of people to speak to and that's what I love about the show yeah well that's that's wonderful Tim Keller is he's the best I mean I have to say that in some ways he's just amazing to the actions that he's the best because they're number of folks out there like John Lennox and others that are just so extraordinary but but Keller is so wonderful and I remember back in the early days of Redeemer the church that he pastors here in New York he would after the service in the morning do q. And a and he would just kind of come out and people could ask him anything and it just kills me that I didn't do that more often or that they weren't recorded or something because my goodness there was no one better than he absolutely tremendous but I'm so glad that he's been a guest on your radio program and now if people want to check out. Unbelievable the radio program we know they can find the book easily but how did they find the radio program well the radio show is available as opposed cost from a website say that's premier Christian radio called slash unbelievable and the book is also available from unbelievable book. Unbelievable Book dot co dot u.k. And again the radio program is w w I doubt premier Christian Radio dot com. And of course the last I believe will be. Find the book so premier Christian Radio dot com slash unbelievable but there's no question mark there I've noticed if you're in the curious ellipsis I'd like to probe that moment on I question my. Web address is unfortunately so we kind of had to drop it so you say I'm not so convinced I don't know Ok so it's it's unbelievable without a question mark there but you know as well you you've been doing this for 11 years what were you doing before this. You know Ike I kind of got my break in right you know about 15 years ago and I've always worked in that sense for premier Christian right you know and very much learn the ropes of live radio on the Breakfast Show one of my jobs doing that as the co-host of the breakfast show for a few years on the station was to to organize the phone in each morning so I had to find an issue that would get people talking and very often I found that the fastest way to get people to pick up the phone and call the station was actually to play devil's advocate and kind of maybe say something controversial take a different point of view and I soon found that that was a good way of getting people interested and debating the issues in hand and in a way that was a good a good practice for why then went on to do with unbelievable because at the end of the day if you're going to have a conversation it has to be interesting and so finding the 2 people who are going to make trusting the conversation is always the key to making sure the listeners are in absolutely we're going to be right back folks I'm talking to Justin Briere early. Or is it Brierly i.y.o. Label Brierly I will never ever again be able to get that straight because I've questioned it will be right back folks stick around. Ever. Sang inside. The. Room. In. Your taxes talking to Justin. Brierly correct not been a riot I should say not just in the it's it's just fun to talk to you you know in the notes I have here your book is unbelievable and you talk about all these conversations you've had with these confirmed atheists including Richard Dawkins and you said that one of the memorable conversations you had with Dawkins he he admitted that since he did believe that morality is driven by underactive evolution another is just completely accidental evolution that there's no God involved his belief that rape is wrong is as arbitrary as the fact that we developed 5 fingers rather than 6 he admitted that yeah your program that he so so why does he believe that rape is well can I give you the background to this conversation Yeah I mean we've only got like 3 minutes at the most because I had this this kind of took place after a debate he had in Oxford with rich with John Lennox actually we've already mentioned and I was in the kind of after show party and I managed to get just 10 minutes with Richard Dawkins with just me and my microphone and so I asked him this question you know well if we devolved into a society where right was considered fine with that main that rape is fine you know because if I could have happened evolutionary speaking out and he did have to come to this eventually conclusion that yeah ultimately I kind of quizzed him Elsom really your belief that right is wrong is arbitrary is a fact we've all 5 fingers rather than 6 and he finished by say you could say that yes and I think that you know he's right if if if atheism is all there is if there is no God then our moral beliefs simply kind of an illusion really of our evolutionary history there's no real right or wrong about these matters we could have developed a different way but most people know that's just not true that there really is something right and wrong especially when it comes to rape and things like that and so on the past instincts I think scream at us that there's something more than simply. The material universe that well that's right moral law given that we can all go out but people aren't are very very rarely forced to think these things through and that's the problem in other words if people happen to be listening to us now or I happen to be listening to your program on premier Christian radio they will say Wow I've never heard that before and you probably haven't heard it before but it's a fact that when we say racism is wrong you might say well why tell me why I know why I know why it's wrong I know why rape is wrong but why do you think it's wrong because you say there's no God So if there's no God how do you get meaning in the universe and they act as though it's self explanatory Well it just is are they that you know but they really not only do they not have an answer they cannot have an answer there is no sufficient answer but they have and they they are very emotional about it because they say well it doesn't matter but how does it not matter and that was the thing I mean when I saw the question of Richard Dawkins and I kind of spell out with a little transcript of our conversation the book The 1st thing he said when I asked him was Well I don't want to answer that question. And so I mean I think that's right because ultimately it is an announcer will question you have the atheistic Well view and what we don't want to face up to but it's the question that people like c.s. Lewis the faithful Committee he recognized that if he wanted to believe in justice he couldn't do that in a universe where there was no ultimate standard of justice that's that's exactly I mean we have to end it there but my goodness what a joy just in barley thank you so much for being my guest on this program thank you Eric and go play bless you folks the book is unbelievable the title is unbelievable the book itself is amazing and unbelievable but the title is unbelievable and the podcast and the radio program is titled unbelievable check it out.
