4th and 14 lob one in the end zone to touchdown Broncos end up covering So if you pick the Broncos in the under you him both for you degenerates out there that actually gambled on that game last night but football is back and met chop a 16 year vet started the game and then played in the 4th quarter is that to me that's that's another reason to not go for the time that situation put Matt Shabat of his misery Vic Fangio has got a pebble in the pipe so you know he wanted to get the hell out of dodge like you had every reason to not want to be around his game for goalie your way go Jason Vince my goal and my goal in Jr did you just save big fans got a pebble in the pipe Yeah yes I understand. My job to paint a picture our work with words u.s.p. And radio on e.s.p.n. Radio 2 so I gotta make sure that I'm giving the people what they need out here on this one speaking to paint a picture biggest take away from the game last night bar none there was a lot of stuff we had you know what happened with the pass interference defensive pass interference was challenge last night we got a look at Drew Locke for the 1st time backing up a 3rd string right now for The Denver Broncos Joe Flacco is hot Ok. On the sideline the tightest hand we knew the hair was already a weapon of mass destruction but now this guy just top to bottom guys and like a 19 do you think he got a live this is not very far from the Hall of Fame did moving to Colorado make him more attractive I don't know what lifestyle choices around Colorado might have benefited his overall health but there is a difference and you know what Drew a lot comes into this with a fair amount of I'd say natural ability in the looks department he can learn to figure to Joe Flacco had to work for this are you going to start calling the Broncos quarterback room the most attractive quarterback room in the n.f.l. Are you willing to make that statement listen after Tom Brady broke up the party with him in Jimmy g. Annoying and he opened up the floodgates for competition. Ok so that's what we took out of the game last night was riveting analysis by the way producer Evan doing a spectacular job a major we get a picture of Bret Rivkind there also a good looking guy. I mean he's got you know he said you know what Bret ribbon looks like he looks like when you're making a character in a video game He's the bass guy that you get before you change anything like he's the stock one Kevin Hogans got Sean line on him man. That's very kind I wasn't expecting a solid smile I'm going to lie. I guess what he's doing for a guy for sure like you said 3rd string and 3rd string right now you know remain that strong performance from him last night some pretty on a c. Like harsh analysis from Vick fan honest analysis after the game it was very honest about his plays in all this but you saw normal rookie things you did but you also saw an emphasis early on when Chris Collins worth his breaking down 2 rookie old linemen in the 1st drive of each of their one for Lindstrom for the Falcons and is a rising or a result. Of the other 1st round pick for the Atlanta Falcons just had a heart break he had some heart issues and he never got to college they went in a procedure that sounds like he's doing all right there's no timetable for his return but got a look at one of the 1st round picks in the off chance of a line for the Atlanta yes 2 topics for each team on the o. Line no a fan dropped his 1st pass Tom Foreman and so you know that it was your typical preseason football game but you know bottom line football is back well we get to talk about it and it's go like the way you're presented by Progressive Insurance. Let me ask you quickly about your luck because your luck is somebody that Missouri had just incredibly high expectations and didn't necessarily go as well as some people thought it would because they thought the expectations were so high for Missouri the team because of July but he was selected early in the 2nd round so you know even going into the broadcast last night one of the things that they were talking about is we get a look at someone that's likely the future injury luck it seems like you're right Mike that obviously was sort of a quiet beginning for July but there are some expectations that whatever Joe Flacco however long this experiment lasts for the Broncos that your lock is to be the future I mean you don't trade up to get somebody attend overall in the 2nd round to not be somebody you're looking at for the future it is very early in training camp but remember this is the Hall of Fame game this is the 5th preseason game a lot of other team. Are Still I mean you're in the middle of install one right now for the most part and so you saw a ton of titans on the field a lot of people under center in a way that we know is not going to be par for the course for football in the year you also saw a lot of install one with a new coaching staff with a new quarterback Joe Flacco so lock is not going to get the reps you know he's not counted on early he's not Kyler Murray it's on the other rookie quarterbacks who are in there getting the reps right away he's not getting those reps with a new quarterback with a new coaching staff with a new system so he looked like a rookie in preseason game one of 5 so and I'm not bummed about that at all and nor Denver Bronco fans should be bummed about that you gotta let the guy grow a little bit and give it some time so in that sense sort of situation you know realistically what are we looking at forgery luck I mean because I think we all believe obviously the lock whatever lock it is a future is going to be for the Broncos is one or 2 years away right so the expectation is that is see a little more from them every week in preseason and all seems to look like it's gets a little better and then we don't hear them again tonight here I am very interested in how he develops over the course of the pieces because the rest of the advantage that a lot of these other quarterbacks have had the ones like Tyler Murray who go into day one and we've talked about have such a fit with their coach include Kingsbury in the off and he wants to run is this is not the oftens that he ran at Missouri last year he got a little bit of exposure with this or Derrick Julie has got some pro background to his game but he is learning how to be an out of a quarterback in an office that right now isn't going to be catering to the things he did well in college it's not that ask that we see a lot of quarterbacks and coaches make right now like we see in Kansas City like we've seen with other guys and certain spots were still sore some things they did in college that it happening for him right now well I think the only reason I bring it up because I think the toughest thing to do for preseason we all know preseason doesn't matter so the toughest thing in every game is to figure out what does matter what is a take away from pre-season they can move forward and that's always going to be the difficulty for every one of these teams as they start to get going these 2 teams are particularly Yes they get an extra game but to have started going that's why. I felt like there were times last night watching the game it was just we're watching a practice we're watching 2 teams practice against each other and it's one of the rare instances in preseason where I don't know that there's really any takeaway for in their team well listen with coaches and with film there's always take away there's always things to learn from a fundamental standpoint did you make any mental mistakes which quite honestly are the worst things to make if you're a young player No you're That's what I would tell any young player know your playbook know where you're supposed to line up in a lease what your responsibility is if you make a physical mistake you can improve upon that a mental mistake this means you weren't obviously mentally there and made that mistake we did have the 1st last night in challenging interference calls on a long past on the sideline when I was on the off and Linden Stevens got call for pass interference and the flag was thrown big Fangio threw the challenge flag didn't think it was pass interference they didn't go the review and I think it was the right call they upheld the call there was a hand in the chest from Stevens that kind of kind of hindered the off a receiver a bit so I didn't I wasn't shocked at all that that play was going to be I felt they did a very very easily and quickly that was what I was happiest about in the process did not take a ton of time they were clear in explaining it that's all we can hope for there's going to be an adjustment period so just prepare weeks one through 4 there's going to be a spot where this goes bad and it takes a long time and we all disagree with that freak out and then like everything else by the quarter pole the season that Lewis Riddick pointed out accurately other day gets treated a lot like pre-season for the starters including the referees it will change after that wall be better I think that's the biggest thing Mike to remember is that we were panicking and I keep reminding everybody last year so much about the rules changes in the n.f.l. And what was he going to mean because the way it was written it sounded like they were going to be able to call wide receivers for dipping their running backs for depth in their head and what are we going to do it often sublime and then it turned out to be a non-issue throughout the course of it I think we'll see the same thing for defensive backs and fair and let's also remember what this this weekend starting last night was a. This is about tomorrow and the insurance and trying mint of 8 more into the Hall of Fame so let's give them their due the the players Champ Bailey Tony Gonzalez Ty Law Kevin why Ed Reed voted on by the voters the senior inductee Johnny Robinson who started out as a running back has a d.b. For defensive backs in this class from the players' standpoint and then the contributors Pat Bowlen and Gil Brandt so they were you know a lot of them were interviewed last night and very cool moment going to be a great moment for all of them again induction Amar you get to hear that the jacket ceremony tonight the induction tomorrow their speeches are really looking forward to all the last nights any preview I made it for Ed Reed let me see what that too is going to say Ed Reed came out there last night with every bit of he is that dude Also I thought it was special last night when the kids of the ball and yes and locked arms they have a great moment celebrate now we've been talking a lot about n.f.l. We want to give a little love to the defensive side of all because earlier we had a topic about sort of the the best trios it's been the year of the duo in the n.b.a. But in the n.f.l. We were looking at skill position trios and ask you guys which ones are best as we try to break down who can compete with what we see recently we had read the Saints and the top of the live quarterback running back Reiber she for not not quarterback and then any 2 others because if you did that you'd probably go my home's Travis calcium Tyree killed right now we're gone with the running back as well and that would be breezy and Michael Thomas so that stood out on the off and side of the ball but we all know defense wins championships right so and there's one person at this table that seems to think that we have to give the defensive side of the ball of all the time and since I'm the oldest I get my way and well a 1000000 percent but it does raise an interesting question because we've seen it on the off chance of side of the ball but what trio stands out on the defensive side of all and this one's tougher because are we taking are you talking ideal line linebacker and then secondary you like to get some of these as rushers are considered outside linebackers other defense events. As you know so it gets a little wishy washy in there but we're looking for a defensive trio like if you want to go surely 3 levels one of them I would go as cologne macro Kwan Smith and Eddie Jackson right yeah I mean that is level the level the level as as really I really want to Hell of a level honestly and this is. I'm picking the Jets. William c.j. Mostly just do it when Williams has not played it down in the n.f.l. There's no I love him I think he was great in college but until you give me a play in the n.f.l. I got to why I got to wait so I mean because of that I was obsessed with Clinton Williams in the draft hoping that the Raiders would somehow find a way to get him so believe me I'm a massive fan but I'm I'm with Sr on this one if I haven't seen you even take a snap in the highest level Listen you know what that's fine if you guys want to wait guess what I'm doing I'm buying my Apple stock at the beginning so that when it blows up I'm the one collecting on this one I will gladly bore the quintillion hype trying but you know I may give you guys probably what days they August to you have got about so August 9th to decide I'll give you the 1st jets preseason game when you see Quinn Williams on the field I'll give you your precious naps and then you can decide and then I'm closing the quote and William Piper but remember we're not talking about over the next 3 years doc about just this year which. I mean I'm I'm still looking as much as they were maligned last year Clay's Campbell miles Jack in jail and Ramsey I mean this is a Jags defense that 12 months ago we were saying how do you ever stop them how do you compete with them I know it was a down year for the team overall but claims Campbell Myles Jack Taylor and that's a good number 3 level one because there are are you doing and outside backer because those that are saying. When James from the charger again those are kind of to address your so it gets a little murky that way but that's a hell of a treat I mean because you could do that with the Cowboys you go to Marcus Lawrence you could go to jail and Smith and late Vander after I do j. One Smith and Byron Jones in the back and who's other one of those young guys they're very concerned about playing but that's amazing when you mention that Mike because you just mentioned the Cowboys on this side and we mentioned earlier whether or not the Cowboys belong on the off chance of side mean they are looking at 2 trios that are largely compiled of young players when we talk about the contract situation. This is just sort of a reminder as Melvin Gordon is you know is holding out and holding out the reminder that you mentioned the Chargers you've mentioned the Cowboys those are 2 teams that have back holding out they want to get paid that also have talent on the defensive side of the ball that are going to have to get paid very soon and they're going to get paid at epic levels yeah you're want to talk about again another one that's kind of a mix mix Von Miller Bradley Chubb and Chris Harris you know. Yeah one with the works to can I'm trying to stay away from 2 edge rusher and trying to go line linebacker and defensive back so for all those out there what about Aaron Donald Dante Fowler and Marcus Peters you go Rams. And you've got your I mean if you look at it Dante found a follower Sasha and I mean you know he's Ok all right like I'm taking the job like one of my Backstreet Boys isn't doing anything and I get it Minnesota did you know Hunter Anthony Barr Harrison Smith. That's a really good one too again 3 lot of dogs in the house. That that's a that's a 3 level Well honestly I would look at that one and I would look at the Jets but I think the Jets might pick now I'm going the futures but not all atoms are you leaving out the Bears. Will macro Smith Eddie Jackson that's a pretty good answer it won't be any Jackson was pretty interception dependent last year but he got him didn't he got them but I'm sorry talk about this year talk about going for him all Jamal Adams is going to have a claim for the better in talking to quitting Williams Do played in college last Heisman. You know I mean wow I'm just I'm a little surprised that you would put Clinton Williams Right right I mean it to. Me and again I love the guy but I got you've got to show me something there's a feel no hesitation at all for you on putting somebody that you haven't seen play a single snap in the n.f.l. . Wow And by the 3rd overall 2 ball is how it goes I mean to Ryan but it did Wow Ok Also none of us wins with any Texans by the way I always think about the Texans as being I got a point j.j. Watt and Clowney and I say it right and I think that's part about it so we'd like you to try and go 3 levels if not we get it but can we go so let's try the defensive side of the ball off and is kind of easy just throwing it out there defense God Little do a little more thinking there but that Minnesota one that's a good one and that's a you talk about defense as I think Jacksonville if it's brought up in Minnesota we brought up our 2 differences that are probably going to reassert themselves this year the Bears took everyone by storm last year because of all the turnovers similar to a way Jacksonville did a couple years prior Minnesota a couple years before and both I don't think fell off nearly as hard as people wanted to believe in all that so I think now a couple years removed from the dominance of some of those groups they're going to get back to showing people these are top 5 defenses and I think both of them will be huge reasons why their teams win that's why sometimes when we're looking at what's going to happen next season I think it makes a lot of sense to pull back and ask yourself not just what happened last season for a team but look back at the last 2 years together cumulative because sometimes things just dipped off and there isn't some major difference in the talent that the Jags have to your point might there isn't some major difference in what they have on the defensive side of the ball and who they have their differences last year it just didn't it didn't meet the expectations and the Jags had other failings as a team so then you have to look at it and say Which year is the aberration was it 2 years ago or last year I'm going to buy with the Jags and the talent that they have that last year was the aberration on the defensive side of the. Well and to your point that there isn't the same level of expectation because we're coming in with more human expectations I think we're going to look at the Jags much differently I agree with that you know another team but I can't find that linebacker is Cleveland with Miles Garrett and award for the lie. That Jimmy Carter got on so I don't believe trying to find that linebacker who would be so that kind of keeps them down low because of that to the point that we made about Jacksonville about Minnesota about these teams we thought Football Outsiders who does some great work that we use pretty often around here uses d.v.l.a. To kind of can textual eyes what we're seeing on both sides of the ball removing all that Minnesota finished 5th for if indeed v.o.a. In 2018 Jacksonville finished 6th so to top 6 defenses in that group when you adjust for a lot of the other elements in football not just the raw stats of these pictures and things we usually judge on these were 2 elite defensive groups even without the benefit of all the turnovers Chicago obviously one we understand that makes perfect sense to anyone to watch but we talked about the other day the turnover drop off from the team that leads the league in takeaways is always he only sent it just like the homes touchdown throws I get are going to drop the turnover the takeaways are going to drop in the last decade it's been about 11 turnovers less than next year for the team that led so prepare for that in the Bears this use doesn't mean they still can't be great they could still be the best defense right now but that
