James intimidate hundreds brought on by the discovery of gold and that be it wasn't humble county that made it happen after this coverage gold in Sacramento and then later on American River and the Trinity River San Francisco became the city with folks who would supply the prospectors with all they needed or thought they needed the population of the city by the bay exploded from 2849 to over 59000 just. 60 years later lumber was needed to build the homes the stores the sidewalks and even the materials needed in the gold fields for things like sluice boxes as an example lumber went from $50.00 a 1000 board feet to $500.00 in just one year this was a backdrop for a burgeoning industry that was to change temper and how it would be harvested and milled just a scant 300 miles to the north but 854 there were 9 Mills on humble Bay And although Eureka was just 3 years old Eureka produced more lumber than any other city or town in the Pacific Northwest by 859 just another 5 years later the area around humble Bay was the most extensively lumber district in California within 30 years sets 888 the North Coast had 400 mills cutting some of the largest trees in the world simply stated Eureka and the surrounding communities are here because of redwood trees where here the ornate Victorian homes were built by people associated with the timber industry the banks railroads and ships in the area were owned by people in the timber industry the city's political leaders were also the timber barons the population from the most meagerly employed to the most well refined where here because of timber the cutting moving and milling of these huge trees was also a new challenge as a demand for wood was skyrocketing and obviously before some of today's abilities existed the timber industry helped to facilitate the development of technology also the primary motivator was to keep up with demand that was regional they had to figure out how to cut down the trees and then get them to the mill more quickly when the industry began the redwoods were cut by 2 men and their axes is often would take up to one week double edged axes where the 1st development and longer handles were employed to get more leverage to dig in cut deeper the cross-cut saw was lengthened considerably during this time with handles at both ends as are. It is $875.00 a steam powered portable saw was attempted to be used but not with much success as also a $200.00 lb drag saw that was invented in Eureka during this time a lighter model was developed later on that helped a certain extent another trying situation was the fact that getting a downed trees to market was problematic even if just sectioned up a $400.00 foot tree it's still a huge endeavor as some of these monsters measured over 30 feet in diameter originally logs were moved by using screw jacks that would be floated or towed to nearby rivers or creeks and delivered to the mills horses and oxen told logs longer distances on what is referred to as a skid road a skid row to simply a series of smaller trees laid down to form a road of trees to drag the larger and heavier trees along so it would have less friction that means the load is easier to move for the oxen or horses or mechanical devices being used to accomplish the job logging railroads primitive at 1st begin hauling logs to the mills these are augment it with the construction of the 1st railroad in the state simultaneous to these challenges for the industry face was the actual cutting of the redwoods at the sawmills when the industry was just forming here a single blade moved up and down by a crank then a longer Sasol was used followed by other saws it cut at the same time but so as to cut red wood had to be made strong and more durable that in other areas due to the amount of work that they are being called on to do fast circular saws were also invented locally to replace the reciprocating saw a set tended to break and snap at the pressures they were put under blade sizes increased during this time from a 12 inch blade eventually to a 72 and circular saw then came the double circular saws that were replaced by 3rd saws and for solace that would work in tandem to cut an even larger log. Finally the 1st bandsaw was developed to replace and compliment those circular saws However the most significant invention in the timber industry was the steam donkey an $882.00 this adaptation of steam power was designed to move large logs and was invented by John boulder of Boulder and Carson Lumber Company in Eureka his inventiveness wasn't just limited to the steam donkey John Doe Bear had a series of inventions beginning with a circular saw to cut lumber an 860 he developed a telling machine in 1963 he also created a steam powered portable Fellingham bucking saw an 875 as well as an improved vertical spool of donkey 8 years later he also had another option with a steam donkey that was mounted on a logging locomotive Waldo bears a one who was 1st thought of as an inventor of the tools to use and harvesting the redwood trees many other local folks in the logging industry were equally as creative to give a sense on how the size of these giants were used early local towns often constructed dance floors on a single tree stump you can also find other areas where the size of the timber is mind numbing by the standards of today just as a last point of trivia are these lesser known facts did you know Redwood has been used to rebuild San Francisco 7 times after fires Redwood was also used as the long pilings in building the Golden Gate Bridge as well. When the redwood highway still went through that town but the combination of their growing. Collection and the relocation and expansion of the highway led the Chapmans to move to their current location in 1963 and the additional collecting they have done as they travel around the country and around the world prompted the construction of an expanded display area in 1905 and the gallery room in 2005 their daughter Sharon Brown and her husband while carry on the chaplain's legacy of collecting gems and sharing them in their shop among the attractions at Chapman's are Native American artifacts petrified wood precious stones meteorite samples and the largest known collection of petrified palms they have an ultraviolet room for viewing phosphorescent materials tomb and their gallery features larger items such as carvings and amethyst geode which may be purchased as can a variety of rocks shells beads and other collectibles since we're in the southern part of Humboldt County let's keep going on Highway 101 until we're just south of the Humboldt County line look for the signs that direct you to confusion Hill the home of fun mystery and memories for multiple generations confusion Hill open near Pearcey about 80 miles south of Eureka in 1989 and has been asking visitors the question is seeing be leaving ever since since 2010 confusion Hill has been listed as a California state point of historical interest it has been featured in Ripley's Believe It Or Not with the world's largest freestanding Redwood chainsaw carving which you'll see in the parking lot and during this time of year you will also be able to take a ride on their miniature mountain terrain the gravity house is one of the challenges that youngsters have enjoyed at confusion Hill for years as their bodies seem to defy the laws of nature now as adults those same individuals are taking their children and in many cases their grandchildren to experience the oddities of confusion Hill another fun family activity or a romantic evening outing for 2 is a tour of Old Town Eureka in the Old Town carriage company's horse drawn carriage take in the charm and soak up the history of this unique area that once was the. Bustling commercial heart of eureka the owner Brendan Ferran is a Liverpool native who used to operate carriages in New York's Central Park 20 and 40 minute horse ride starter on 11 am next to the gazebo in Old Town at 2nd f. Streets and they continue into the early evening maximum capacity is 4 adults and 2 children there's a curious sight of McKinley fill in the middle of the shopping center just off Central Avenue in the center of town you'll find a long tall structure that you would not expect to find there it's the world's largest totem pole and while there is no history of totems being part of the local Indian culture in the region nonetheless here it stands one very very tall totem pole it was carved by a local developer Ernie Pierson for his new shopping center and McKinley built to help generate notoriety for the facility in 1961 he and John Nelson created this $160.00 foot tall totem pole from a single 500 year old redwood tree in the wooden part of the structure weighs in at a hefty $57000.00 pounds and sits on an iron base which keeps the pole erect and locked in place the entire unit tips the scales at over 30 tons of totem. Another fun outing for the family is the Blue Ox mill works its house in a building that originally was constructed for the North Mountain Power Company to feed electricity to the fledgling city of Eureka and then later used by the Eureka electric railway the structure also served time as a ship building facility when the mill works moved into it in the mid 1970 s. The compound had fallen into disrepair the timing was either good or bad depending on your view this was during the era of double digit inflation and a housing recession that hit nationally at the same time as many of the mills in the area were shutting their doors Eric Hollenbeck and his family began collecting the unique antique equipment needed for this Victorian era mill in short order he had obtained one of the last 52 inch circular saw mills left in operation this tool is similar to the one that John dopier used in local Mills over 100 years earlier they also took possession of a player that dates back to 1905 and neighboring them to turn out properly dimensioned lumber for those seeking to restore the many older structures in the region they are able to produce wooden gutters under 190 to 4 sided Molder and utilize a schooling saw to make the authentic gingerbread trim that is so characteristic of the unique Victorian homes that are Eureka's architectural masterpieces one of the basic tenets of the mill works has been to maintain and pass on the trades of the Victorian era including blacksmithing ceramics plastering and printing in addition to their vintage woodworking tours are available either self guided or as part of a guided group you may also schedule workshops and large group tours Blue Ox mill works is located at 1st an ex streets in Eureka The entrance is near the Target department store the northwestern side of town the blue rocks mill works confusion Hill the old town carry droids Chapman's gem and mineral shop and Museum and the world's tallest totem pole great humble County destinations. Dodge and 6 partners created the ill River Valley Lumber Company the lumber town was known as Newburgh in honor of Dodge's hometown Newburgh New York in later years the business came to be known as the e.j. Dodge lumber company now we come to Fortuna the current name of for tuna isn't the original name of the city it's been referred to as Springvale due to the number of naturally occurring springs in the area and slide for the landslide that happened northwest of town in the early years of the settlement for tuna comes from a name that the founder of the town Reverend gardener gave to the settlement after purchasing the land he named it fortune because he believed it was an ideal place to live he changed the name to Fortuna because at the time this was a unique name in the United States for a town in the middle of town is the city park while today it has the old railroad depot and the rodeo grounds along with the baseball diamonds and picnic areas originally this area was the Fortuna Otto camp established in early 1921 it was an immediate success later after the depression the advent of the motel and with the highway realigned out of town the property evolved into the park area it is today. This is the final of our presentation of the communities and the places of the il River Valley metropolitan can hardly be found now but it one time had a red wood mill located there and a number of private residences now it is in the middle of a dairy land but still a funk. Drive off Highway $101.00 just south of the Van Dusen bridge metropolitan was originally known as McDiarmid prairie and was renamed in 1904 with the construction of the Metropolitan Redwood Lumber Company there was also the Metropolitan Hotel it was used mainly for the mills employees and their guest as well as the visiting public you can still find some of the old sidewalks of the small community in place leave it is another community in the river valley it is another town that has had more than one name in its history Swack or station was the name of the local railroad station name for Samuel sua the owner of the property swagger remained the Community Reference until 893 when it was renamed Lolita Hill River Drive the old highway will take you to Lolita from the community of fern bridge the original Redwood highway went right through the downtown Lolita in the mid 1930 s. Hello I am Andy phatic I travel Highway one o one from Del Norte to Humboldt County numerous times every week every time I drive last chance grade I wonder about my safety and the safety of others Federal Highway Administration and state officials are well aware the block is indeed falling into the ocean we need a bypass to be identified and built before some innocent person or family dies as a result of this hazard please call or write supervisor Virginia and urge them to keep moving forward on addressing this critical safety hazard. Here is our next destination and destination radio. Looking for places with a warm temperatures have many great options in our area 'd 'd beaches on the rivers and Humboldt County have an entirely different personality and experience to them than do the ocean beaches. Obviously there's the views in the waves in the fog in the breezes they're all uniquely found at the ocean and then one of the types of swimming that is what you're looking for deep swim holes or a riffle to lay back in something with a cliff or rock formation to jump off of or sandy beaches to wade in. If you're just looking for River beaches we can give you some choices for through early fall you're going to find that most beaches are going to be accessed in one or 2 ways either by driving there or by floating down the stream in a canoe kayak raft or inner tube all are more than acceptable ways to find that great beach and place to swim a Trinity River is one of those rare is that just naturally draws people to it the vistas are spectacular in the beaches while sometimes rocky are easy to settle into for a great day on the river in the Willow Creek area you'll find big rock Tish Tang and Kim 2 and Kim 2 you'll find a bluffer ledge that is about a 20 foot drop into the Trinity nothing tricky about this one just having fun is all you need to focus on further upstream or anyone you'll find beach access set Sal here or Hawkins bar along with the grace falls which is for service campground There's also a nice swimming area at the eastern side of the bridge on the Denny road the Devil's Elbow is another popular location it offers a few sandy beaches but provides a section of the river without Rapids and ripples to worry about is a nice spot to stretch out and lay around as well to get to Willow Creek So you're an Bert ranch you'll need to drive out to $99.00 anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour long drive as what So have you may need a couple more minutes traveling on Highway $96.00 to some of those swimming areas. The Van Dusen Rivers a bit more limited in the swimming locations for diving and jumping certainly swimmers delight in the county park as the premier location on the river but there are a lot of smaller areas where you can get into the river including right next door of Pampling Grove it's part of the same county park grizzly bluff State Park also has areas where you can get into the river and relax while cooling down part of the challenge of the Van Dusen is that once it gets into the canyon areas it's really tough to get to the river and this starts to happen shortly after the state park there's also Ruth lake just beyond the county line in Trinity County but that's a lake and not a river and we're focusing on river beaches there are some nice swimming areas in the Mad River just outside of blue lake while there the swimming is available access to the river in many places is either illegal because a private property and trash passing laws or the access areas are not set up for any number of vehicle parking However I'll buy the fish Azzurri on hatchery road you will find a number of access points to get to the river to get there you'll need to go through blue lake and follow road Ave you'll see the signs to the fish hatchery start looking for the places to park at the bridge because that's the spot to climb down to get to the beaches at the river the south fork of the Eagle River is another easy place for access for swimming you'll see folks in the area down on the river at Redway Benbow State Park and other locations but the best swimming hole that you can easily access is at the dyer Ville exit there is a stop for a self guided auto to or of the Avenue of the giants that's about 4 miles south of Red Cross. The gravel road at the end of the parking lot takes you directly down to the river bar with many locations to set up a picnic site with swimming all day long again there are many other spots along the avenue that you can get to the river from but these are areas that can handle more than just one or 2 vehicles at a time there are some general rules of them regarding swimming in the rivers in Humboldt County 1st you'll want to be sure to take plenty of waterproof sunscreen a sunburn simply isn't an option you want to consider many folks will even have hats to help prevent the pain you'll see in a tubers and kayakers wearing hats to prevent too much exposure and it's a pretty good idea for everyone some even wear long sleeved shirts the other thing that is often the glutted are 1st aid kits a jam toe or a cut on a rock is no fun and if you can't properly clean the cut and treat the wound it could get worse later on finally snacks and liquids while you may be tempted to have a cooler of beer alongside you it isn't typically the wisest thing to do and don't bring glass with you make it plus take so there's no need to worry about broken pieces of glass then no one else will need to either take the time to prepare watch the kids to make sure they're safe have a blast this summer. And early fall on the beaches along the rivers in Humboldt County. Weights crashed on the rocks at Wilson Creek rafters right the rapids on the Trinity River Roosevelt bringing traffic to a standstill on the red but highway inspiring natural scenery and wildlife awesome outdoor experiences destination radio it's all about where to go and what to do on the Wild Rivers coast of Oregon and California is beautiful Redwood Coast stay with 980 8 am destination radio and find out where to play and relax in our area now screaming at destination dash Radio dot com.
