The Roosevelt High School Girls Basketball coach is facing criminal charges and placed on administrative leave. Good evening. Im lynn melling. Thank you for joining us tonight. Gerald tig johnson has been charged with Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee and assault with intent to commit sexual abuse. He was booked into the polk county jail this afternoon. Mike dasilva joins us with more on the story. Mike. The School District says it learned about this yesterday, and the district learned this morning that there was a warrant out for johnson. Who is both a coach and a teacher. 18 19 1634 at this point in time we dont have a lot of details. The complaint was made with the Des Moines Police department and so the report is with them. Weve not seen that yet and so we dont have information on the timing or the exact accusations that are being made right now. the game must go on. And tonight the roosevelt Girls Varsity Basketball Team had a game at hoover high school, as the riders and the off, even in the midst of all of the controversy surrounding their coach. I asked phil roeder, the director of communications for the School District about what impact the news might have on the team, school, and community. 18 19 5118 20 12 our high schools, all of them in des moines are pretty tight communities, and theyre going to support each other. The assistant coaches of course have stepped up to take over for the game tonight and of course at this point these are accusations being made, what comes next of course remains to be seen. in the meantime, the district says a teacher is assigned to assume johnsons classroom duties and assistant coaches will be leading the basketball team, as they did tonight. Im told the Police Report will be available tomorrow. A newton husband and wife are facing drug charges after a bomb scare at their home yesterday. Police were executing a search warrant at the home of david and Jennifer Kelso when they found a police evacuated surrounding homes while the device was inspected. The kelsos were arrested on drug charges following the incident. Police say more charges could still be filed. A Pleasant Hill woman is headed to prison for abusing children at her in home day care. Christina williamson received a five year sentence for two counts of child endangerment. Parents who spoke at her sentencing described williamson as a monster. 39 23 i missed work, i missed sleep, i missed my family because all i could see was you throwing my child in my head. My daughter is healthy and she is safe and she will not remember this time of her life and it will not haunt her like it haunts us 39 williamson was trusted to care for several children. Including desiree leblancs daughter. She worked as a child abuse investigator for dhs and says while protecting other peoples kids. Hers fell through the cracks. Leblanc has since quit her job. I havent. Im so deeply sorry 00 47 22 both parents who spoke in court today say their children are physically healthy. That was a big concern after seeing some of the disturbing hidden video footage of williamson treating a baby like a rag doll. The parents also expressed tremendous guilt over trusting her to care for their children. The man who went on a random shooting rampage last year will be sentenced tomorrow. Pete polson is guilty of one count of attempted murder and two counts of assault with intent to inflict serious injury. Polson went on a shooting spree in Pleasant Hill in november of 2014. Two people were seriously injured. A third person avoiding being hit by polsons bullets. At his trial polsons attorneys argued that he couldnt be held accountable for his actions on meth at the time. And the us screening process isnt Strong Enough to keep them from coming into this country. The city of Des Moines Community Development Director says. An action taken by the City Council Last Night on the tax abatement plan will help several projects move forward. Phil delafield says the revised urban renewal tax abatement plan that the Council Passed in late october became problematic for a few developers and their projects. The prior plan required that construction begin by december 31st. That proved to be a challenge for the projects. The amendment approved last night extends the eligibility of the prior plan from december 31st to june 1st. Delafield says the contractors and developers have made significant investments in the projects, and this is a way to make sure that its fair for them to move forward. Substantial effort to develop plans to get a rezoning in place, to prepare your site plan. So, they have hired architects, theyve hired engineers. Theyve invested in their planning phases to have the project move forward. The company is among several wall street firms struggling with dwindling client activity and trading revenue. A new report says families nationwide are struggling to pay for quality care for their children. It could cost as much as College Tuition. Eleven million children are in childcare under the age of 5 and for vast majority of children, their parents work. The vote was 407 to 19. The measure would impose travel restrictions stopping citizens from 38 countries if theyve been to syria, iraq, iran or sudan since 2011. Ryan says this will help neutralize the threat from Foreign Terrorists entering our country. So we are coming together to tackle this threat and we are ready to do more. The concept is preventing those countries, who may have been radicalized. Mccarthy says you have more than 5,000 individuals that have western passports in this program that have gone to iraq or syria in the last five years. Those are gaps that we need to fix.
