Iowa is one of just three states to already be dealing with the flu in big numbers this season. And here the virus has already brilbeck has the story the flu season is hitting iowa hard. With two people already dying because of complications with the flu. They were males between the ages of 40 and 60 and they both had Underlying Health causes. The flu can a more serious impact on the young, the old, and those with a compromised immune system. Iowa is just one of three states in the continental us with high flu rates. The best way to prevent the flu, experts say, is with a vaccination. This s vaccination covers influenza a, which is the most prominent in the country right now. There is a manufacturers shortage of the popular flu mist though. We were supposed to get over two thousand dozes. We only got 830. So that might. We know about a lot of kids, the shot scares them. But parents shouldnt wait. They should get the flu shot for their kids now. Aside from being vaccinated, experts say the best way to avoid spreading the flu is to remember the three cs cover sneezes and coughs, clean hands frequently and contain germs by staying home when youre sick. And if people in your family are sick or at work are sick make sure you are disinfecting surfaces that they most frequently touch. Here at Mercy Medical center in des moines. They havent treated any cases of the flu this season yet. But they know its just a matter of time. Doctor Michele Granada specializes in infections diseases. She says. Get immunized, and dont underestimate the impact of the flu. Ive seen patients die. So i think this should be really, um, taken seriously. Experts say the flu season usually peaks in january or february. But at times it has dragged on as long the investigation is underway to determine whether speed and a combination of drugs or alcohol led to a deadly car crash last night. Witnesses told police that 53year old deanna gliem was driving well over the posted speed limit when she slammed into another car on hubbell avenue. 22 50 49 it just happened. Vandals targeted holiday decorations in the city of dayton this weekend. i drove out there sunday after church,. Its just so awful, small towns working so hard. Sometime early sunday. Vandals damaged dozens of Christmas Decorations in the dayton city park. Wooden figures. Along with candy canes and various lighted displays were knocked over or smashed. The city is planning a work day on saturday to get the decorations ready for viewing by thanksgiving. Iowa State University is investigating vandalism to a statue of George Washington carver. Police say. Late friday someone sprayed shaving cream on the statue. Carver was isus first African American student, who went on to become a world renowned agriculturalist. It is not known whether the motive for the vandalism was racially motivated. Today, Governor Terry branstad joined a growing number of governors. Ordering all state agencies to halt any work on syrian refugee resettlements. Branstad calls on the federal government to review how refugees are screened before theyre allowed into the united states. And until then. N. And being recommended for resettlement to actually be accepted through the department of states process. as for what impact governor branstads order will have. Wuertz isnt sure. 14 07 56 we have a state refugee coordinator that is an employee of the department of Human Services but the two resettlement agencies here in des moines are Catholic Charities and the u. S. Committee for refugees and immigrants who receive the federal grant dollars to help provide resettlement services, so i dont know exactly what authority or statement has. Lsi says resettled refugees play an Important Role in the local economy and usually start working within their first 90 to 180 days. Well have more on the manhunt for suspects in the paris attacks.
