Treasuries that's pushing up on deal to across the world the b.o.j. Is going to have this kind of week to week battle in order to tamp down expectations for policy normalization and that's been operations by a little bit more. On the margin in order to keep those heels from getting out of whack from their target a strengthening Yan has also put pressure on the Bank of Japan the yen is currently trading at 109.90 here in the u.s. The Labor Department issues its monthly jobs report it 8 30 am Wall Street time Bloomberg international economics and policy correspondent Michael McHugh reports inflation takes center stage in the January jobs report analysts and investors looking at average hourly earnings to see if there was any kind of wage pressure during the month the 234000 job gain in this week's a.d.p. Report suggests a very tight labor market that could push unemployment down to just 4 percent that should mean companies will pay more to attract scarce talent that's not happening though earnings were up just $2.00 and a half percent in 2017 economists are also looking for a bit of a January rebound after December's disappointing payroll number although some interpretation will be necessary as the government makes its annual revisions update in Washington Michael McKee Bloomberg daybreak Michael thank you let's turn to earnings now beginning with Europe's largest investment bank don't you bank reported 4th quarter revenue that declined to the lowest level in 7 years still c.e.o. John cry and says the lender is on the path to producing growth Bloomberg says Subash didn't sound like his details from our London bureau another year in the red another consecutive I knew a loss even the fixed income trading business which is meant to be the strength still the biggest source of income but slumping by 29 percent really not feeling it with confidence cried is she say cautiously optimistic saying that he believes that there are still firmly on the path to producing growth and higher return sustained discipline and cost and risk he says we have made progress but we are not yet satisfied with our results and shares of going to banks are down almost 6 percent in Frankfurt here in the u.s. Apple has quieted the investor concern with 4th quarter results showing solid demand for the i Phone 10 the average selling price for the i Phone was nearly $800.00 of the period from last. 700 dollars last year and suggests users are gravitating toward the i Phone 10 which starts at a 1000 dollars years of ample this morning here the pre-market up 7 tenths of a percent Amazon shares are surging up more than 5 percent after the company reported its strongest 4th quarter sales growth in 8 years and it was profitable quarter ever revenue growth is accelerating even as Amazon is forecast across $200000000000.00 in sales this year meanwhile Alpha that reported 4th quarter profit missed the estimates the new tax law result of the nearly $10000000000.00 hit to earnings Google's parent company was also hobbled by rising payments for search at higher bargaining expenses shares of Apple up almost 4 percent in early trading and big cooling is tumbling again this morning extending its slide this year to more than 30 percent a Bloomberg glamor reports from Hong Kong in the last month and a half a strops 50 percent of its value you know it's a lot more than a correction but for in a long term investors a bit going they say you know this is par for the course on the other hand you know because it's never been a larger us that that has been you know big loss only $44000000000.00 in market value in January it's never even come close to $44000000000.00 in total market cap until last year anyway so this is kind of uncharted territory I think even for long term investors at that point he said you know we've seen this for well I don't think we really have seen this before and taking big calling this morning it is down more than 11 percent at $8066.00 in just updating shares of alphabet this morning just checking those they're down 3.9 percent this morning futures are lower as well s. The Rangers lost the Devils were winners along with the Bruins in the n.b.a. The Wizards won Global News 24 hours a day powered by more than 2700 journalists medalist in more than 120 countries and Michael Barr this is Bloomberg John All right thank you Michael well for economists that's just as good as the Super Bowl it is jobs day jobs day today and walking us through the report this morning will be Bill Gross of Janice Henderson That's at $830.00 Wall Street time let's get a preview now from Bloomberg economist Carl Rik. Is there any wage growth that we're going to see in this report because that's really what we've all been waiting for some signs of wage inflation well if we look at the wage trend in the economy we've really been locked in a range over the last 2 years really. And there's no evidence that we're drifting to the upper end of that range as well so average hourly earnings are growing basically between 2.4 and 2.8 percent in year over the last 12 months and worried about $2.00 now so we're kind of the mid to low end of that range I don't think we'll break out of that range in today's report to be sure I think we could start bumping up against those pressures in the 2nd half of this year was December's jobs numbers so weak December was weak largely because November was a blowout and sell a lot of people look at that December report and started to well wring their hands over jobs market that could be faltering or what not really. We need to look at that December in the context of November when we average the 2 together we see an economy that still is performing well there may have been some idiosyncrasies with respect to seasonal hiring. A lot of those temporary workers around the holidays got hired in November rather than December and so that just push someone be nicer around which really didn't affect the underlying trajectory or we have full employment now we are very close to full employment but until we get that wage pressure pick up that you are highlighted we can continue to ponder whether rather the neutral level of the unemployment rate debt how much lower it is relative to previous cycles and mind you if we look at the last 4 or 5 economic cycles that sweet spot the neutral level has been drifting lower in each cycle so close to 4 percent I have to think we're there but the confirmation comes when you get the wage pick up it's not there yet but as we saw the reports earlier this week the Employment Cost Index unit labor costs we are starting to see some upward drift productivity was a little worrisome wasn't not worry so it was a yes stumble in the 4th quarter to be sure nonetheless if we look at that year and year trend rather than just the quarterly profile we see things are rather drifting higher and I think this is a natural response to that subtle drift higher in labor costs as well as workers become more expensive businesses pushed to what increase their efficiency and just like you boost mpg when gas prices rise one worker prices rise businesses improve increase their raw output per worker it's a natural kind of mid to late cycle development and I think we're just starting to see that emerge and in the latter part of 2017 and that trend continues into this year but about 45 seconds of what else you're looking for 1195 on. The payroll again so slightly above consensus. On the unemployment rate death so no change there but really the focus this year is going to drift away from the payroll change and really concentrating creasing really on the unemployment rate or more specifically those wage pressures average hourly earnings and that's I guess for equity investors Let's let's say that's going to be a big focus because inflation that's going to be the focus because the fit is going to respond more aggressively if we suddenly start to see that labor cost pressures are driving a sustained pickup in inflation Ok current record on a Bloomberg economist My pleasure thank you very much a $30.00 is the big jobs report and again the $180.00 is the consensus survey from Bloomberg last month 148 was the form payroll number you're listening to Bloomberg daybreak will have Bill Gross of Janice Henderson to walk us through the report with the top team of John Farrell surveillance so stay tuned for that this is Bloomberg. For many businesses hiring is tough if you want to access to highly qualified candidates fast and you don't want to sign a long term contract or pay upfront fees that's what you need and be done come to bring 6 times more hires than any other job site according to independent research indeed is on for new users a $50.00 credit to give their 1st jump premium visibility as a sponsor just reading this offer at Indy dot com slash credit that's indeed dot com slash credit terms conditions and quality standards apply 1st off you Robots are a great addition to the accounting department your auditing and risk assessment skills are excellent It's official robots a vendor of the world of accounting and certified management accountants have mastered the 11 most critical practice areas in business which means they'll be the ones calling the shots for casting outstanding but please stop oiling yourself up in the lunchroom I knew there was a there's always this. Is now $638.00 done well Street The following is from Bloomberg View the opinion section of Bloomberg late last year the Air Force realized it was facing the shortage of $700.00 fighter pilots the service to its credit pushed ahead with initiatives to avert the crisis the result the Air Force is now short about $1200.00 fighter pilots it's not that the steps weren't improvements it's that they were too small with commercial airlines poaching the military ranks the military predicament is likely to get worse the Pentagon's main response has been to spend more offering retention bonuses and raising monthly flight pay the Air Force also graduated its 1st class of noncommissioned officers from drone flight school still these changes amount to little more than a Band-Aid what to do increase. The Pentagon is listening it's upper out promotion policy in addition giving pilots with families more flexibility to stay at one base would improve their quality of life these steps could make a difference as the threat of great power conflict rises the air forces capability is ever more vital the national security and global stability this editorial was written by the Bloomberg View at Atauro board I'm David Shipley from our view please go to Bloomberg View dot com and view go on the Bloomberg terminal This has been Bloomberg View and Bloomberg View editorials can be heard every weekday at this time Time now for that Bloomberg small business report at a recent House Small Business Committee hearing Howard Marshall deputy assistant director of the F.B.I.'s cyber division told lawmakers small business is under prepared for cyber attacks the ranking member on the committee Nydia Velazquez said in her opening statement at the hearing that 40 percent of all cyber attacks are against to small businesses small businesses generally have fewer financial and human resources and technical know how to help mitigate cyber threats now there's a move underway to get more small firms to share data of potential threats with the government threats hearing about his companies to exchange information on cyber security vulnerabilities and potential attacks with the government industry groups and each other but there's a trust issue small businesses may not be sharing information with the government because they either don't trust the process or unsure what legal and data security protections they have when turning over cyber threat data about is today's Bloomberg a small business report ever 830 the release of the jobs report today will talk to Bill Gross of Janice Henderson about the numbers this is Bloomberg. This is flash down here is not go viral with more on what's going on around the world than Michael Ware and President Donald Trump has decided to allow publication of a Republican memo arguing that the f.b.i. Global News 24 hours a day but hour but more than 2700 journalists battle is the more than 120 countries a Michael Bar This is Bloomberg Sometimes I think you're making this up time now to check what's going on to do you see some of the top stories that are nation's capital good President Trump taking a tour of the Customs and Border Protection National Targeting Center in Sterling Virginia he'll then head to Florida for the weekend Republican lawmakers continue baiting in West Virginia that's where they are going to work on their legislative strategy for the year at the same time the White House says the president has decided to allow publication of that g.o.p. Memo that argues the f.b.i. Abuse. It's surveillance powers in the rush of probe the administration also says it's unlikely to redact any of the contents of the document the move likely to ratchet up the partisan warfare over Special Counsel Robert ballers probe give Tell us more about the situation is Bloomberg Washington correspondent a read John so nothing's going to be crossed out in this memo Do I have that right yes that's what we but that's her source they're telling us that it's going to be it just as is there were there was some there was some idea that he might work out some part of it but that changed despite our requests from the f.b.i. Requests from the d.o.j. To redact some part of it I'm working with White House lawyers to try and get those changes made but we believe that it's going to be the memo as it Ok Now the argument against it among other things it's going to road to confidence in the institutions of government namely f.b.i. Justice you know I've got to argue that the president's tweets already pretty much may have already done that right he tweeted this morning that the top leadership and investigators of the f.b.i. And just department have politicized the sacred investigative process in favor of Democrat. Goes on to say rank and file are great people but that is the concern that this memo is basically saying about the f.b.i. And the d.o.j. Are partisan and made a partisan decision at the beginning of this rush to pro and we have people like Speaker Paul Ryan said yesterday in West Virginia that the that this is not about degrading of the mall or restoration is not about degrading the f.b.i. This is about the House Intelligence Committee doing their oversight duty but there is that concern that once this memo comes out this could hurt the f.b.i. The d.o.j. And also weighing on this the guy that Mr Trump fired James Comey Yes Comey said that weasels and liars don't usually hold the field and that there are a lot of streets named after Joseph McCarthy I this is a rare tweet from the far. The former f.b.i. Director criticizing that there we also heard yesterday from John Brennan who was a CIA director under President Obama saying that this is why he had our disagreements with Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee this kind of partisanship from Devon you know as the chair of the House intelligence committee and House Republicans as like nothing he's seen before and that the lack of moral leadership from the White House is contributing to this crisis. Is it safe to say this is just an all out war between the White House and Justice. Yes I mean it's an interesting thing to read the f.b.i. Our Department of Justice chair is Jeff Sessions someone who was a one of the 1st senators if not the 1st senator to back to back from during his campaign. And of course Chris Rea the f.b.i. Director is also someone who the president chose as a Right now he's fighting this is a Republican administration and a Republican House Intelligence Committee fighting with a Republican or the f.b.i. And d.o.j. What does this do to the investigation of the Russian involvement. I think from Special Counsel Mahler's about our point of view it doesn't change anything he's going to keep working through keep scheduling interviews there's still that question of when he's going to interview if and when he's going to interview President Trump but I believe that but House Intelligence Committee investigation has for a long time been seen as a very partisan endevor on the Senate side the Senate Intelligence Committee has believed. Richard Burr the chair the Republican chair and Mark Warner the ranking Democrat have made an effort to appear that they're working together so that of us the Asian will proceed and we'll see what the special council comes up with the Republicans taking the Democrats. We saw yesterday that shot and the Senate South Dakota Republican Senator John Thune said is that baby that Democratic memo should also be released and we saw Speaker. There a spokeswoman say that he's open to the release of the that's the democratic rebuttal the 10 page rebuttal to Republican and. He said that that should be released if that's been scrubbed any anything that reveals sourcing So we're seeing some Republicans say at the very least like well you know the Democrats have the surgeon maybe we can see that too but they're still standing by newness and the Intelligence Committee and the decision to release this memo early Thanks a lot we've received of Bloomberg Washington corresponded to rejoin and you can read more about this story in Bloomberg dot com or the Bloomberg terminal and also reminder you can follow all the latest on Bloomberg Radio and Washington Bloomberg 991 at one of 5.7 f.m. H.d. 2 can well now it's time to have a lunar green or a board with 3 Sykora smart meters can help water companies spot problems in water mains and in lines at the household level and at least 2 private companies are not waiting for the White House to move on improvements to the nation's crumbling infrastructure Suez water and American Water are blazing a path for small and medium sized cities that lack the access and resources to install the meters and the smart meters can be as much as 10 times the cost of 20 dollar analog meters and they're installed outside homes and businesses they relay real time water usage data directly to the municipalities or in some instances to the homeowners knowing how much water is used daily allows everyone to spot Leaks According to the e.p.a. Every day nearly 6000000000 gallons of treated drinking water are lost due to leaking pipes and these meters could get. Even smarter conservation labs is readying its own water meter known as h 2 No and it could have it on the market this year the system takes monitoring a step further by identifying the source of leaks as well and that's a Bloomberg green business report on Patrice Acorah right at your age thank you we continue to watch shares of Merck this morning they are up 1.6 percent in early trading at her ported a 4th quarter profit bad beat analyst estimates this is on a day when futures are tumbling with s.
