All of us. A little look at me and dreamy for a particular set of skills and on my worst day I get that Hello everyone this isn't because I don't work a lot there and not knowing what they do not even like Democrats just keep the tribulation of on an appealable it frustrates. The laughter you know Kevin Woodman and my Duluth. Welcome back to the Kevin my show on sports radio 1290 filling in for Kevin Woodman I'm Mike Luke. Justin Spears and here co-hosting that Jay dubbin work in the boards you give us a call at 801-298-0129 extension 0 All right Mr Justin Spears tell us a little bit about yourself The Man Who are you what do you want what are you doing all right so now born in Tucson I was born recently born in Southern California and I need to beach here when I was just a wee toddler so I grew up in Tucson got out of the beach oh yeah went from beach to Yes So yeah I grew up in Tucson was always of course I'm a roots in l.a. So my professional teams are Los Angeles but I grew up a diehard Arizona fan and I love I love the Wildcats I ended up going to the University of Arizona went there for years got my bachelor's degree in journalism and was just recently hired back in April before graduation by Cox Media Group based in Atlanta and there are 2 sites are f.c.c. Country and laid of 10 and they wanted to add. More websites to complete the power 5 conference package and they hired me to be one of the pack so what do you do what do you do then what's a what's a weekly weekly good deal like for you right now yes so every week obviously you set up the schedule given there give the editor your availability and once the schedules up say for instance I work from 8 to 30 today I wake up at 740 go set the coffee timer go make a quick shower make myself a hot cup of coffee open up my laptop go to the slack channel say hey guys I'm here until 230 go on Twitter anything that's worthy enough of a post are packed well I'll just make a quick post and put it up now what happens then during game day will you would you submit reports during game day or what So I mean it's more like if an interesting play happens or if and if anything that's worthy of a post that will give us a lot of traffic just make a quick post so unfortunately it will be. Breaking my 3 year streak of not having a season credential for a. So I won't be in the press box cover in Arizona Wildcats this football season but I will be there is something relaxing though about watching games from your house that was during a commercial you can go to another game you can go to another game where you guys don't have the standard you don't have Pac 12 Network there right now and I don't that's why I'm in the spend time in Vail Arizona my parents and I would go I was going to match and that's probably a pretty good idea right there now you use mention you went to the USA what journalism right Ok and what have you come up through there so I always love journalism it's my passion especially you know getting paid to talk about sports it's a great it's a great gig right now for a living pretty sweet Ok so you know I have a passion for it and when we talked about the 3 o'clock hours what Damian Alinea to Sunday is now sure there's not going to be a lot of money into it as soon as you get into the industry but if you can you're not you're not entering a 500 k. Job exactly but if you continue to work on your craft and develop your brand eventual Lee you're going to make a decent living out of it so I I'm new I'm still just a young pup but I'm anxious to get the process going ideally where do you see yourself in 10 years when you're you'll be 22 at the time. 12 years on. So I mean I've always wanted to. Even though I was born in Tucson I've always wanted to go back to Los Angeles I've always said e.s.p.n. 710 l.a. Is my all time dream job and if I had a a daily 3 hour radio show out there in Los Angeles I would I would even leave Right yeah I don't know I totally hear you on that now you made a big name for yourself off a tweet that you sent out that usually people in the lowly Tucson market don't get 323-3000 retreats and something like 90000 likes what exactly was this tweet that you sent out the went viral Yes so it happened as soon as Kyrie Irving was traded to the Boston Celtics and. Always in the back of my mind I was like oh Kyrie Irving thinks that the the world is flat the earth is flat right he state I said stated that many to many times and I'm like How can I make this into a joke and then all of a sudden it clicked the newspaper of the city of Boston is the Boston Globe and you know what's funny is like I had to make sure I was like Ok before I've sent out this tweet let me make sure I get the right definition of global rock about Spirit this is you know it's a smart alec come out at you right now and saying well that's not really what globe means exactly sells like Ok Globus theorical let me say Ok a boss reporter comes up to Mrs Hello I'm from the Globe and Kyrie Irving pretty much says excuse like excuse me like I'm so confused smart alec I really like it's a corny tweet and I get a few likes but sure enough it was like 30 minutes and I'd shut off my phone because the notifications was just going off the board how do you know how many notifications you have in your 1st 30 minutes or how many every tweet did you have in the 1st 30 minutes I think it was like 9000 Wow And then the event if it was made it was it was really hot at 1st read eventually kind of just do it all the way I don't think you're going to get more than 20000. Right and eventually I was at Dave and Busters for a friend's birthday and it was like they just kept going off and off and are looking at me like keep it go tell my friends do it right how many Twitter followers you pick up off that or a 250 part that's a good that's a solid number right there all right I want to brag too much but yeah you know that's that's good stuff though I had I had quite a few people messaged me saying Did you see Spears tweet and then I looked at it and I saw that the number was already at like 13 k. Retreats or something so it. Well done my man well done let's let's touch on some you have a football right now absolute What's your what are your expectations for this team . I recently always had for an 8 but I really think they could pull in another went right I've given in the 5 and 7 ballpark Ok I mean like like we talked about optimism and so maybe somehow some way they end up becoming a 6 and 16 probably 75 but I don't think those 7 in 5 years there's going to be a statue right next to a little sort of retread Rica's than that I mean that's what you're looking at I hear you I'm going into last season and I know that there's a ton of kind of fan apathy right now just because of what last season entailed and you know just what we went through it wasn't even so much that you lost 3 games is the manner in which you lost him I mean just get the 70 to 7 game against Washington State I mean no boy you know I mean that's that's just a bad look entirely but. I. When you watch the coaches speak when you watch Richard talk he's not pumping things out saying oh my gosh this is like the best team I've ever had There's none of really that hyperbole but there seems to be a level of comfort that he possesses with this team right now and I'm just I'm really interested to see how that how that translates on the field I mean you just look on the defensive side of the ball we're talking Brian Jeffries earlier you're to have on the field one time you could have 67 true freshman out there I mean how often in major 5 Division one football does that happen now you could say that that's a good or that's a bad thing it's probably not the greatest thing in the world but I think it also shows you though that he brought in guys that he at least believe are physically capable Yeah and the recruiting class wasn't that great of a belief and it's like 10th right back 12 when it looked like that class was going to be one of his best or Exactly so. I was kind of skeptical about their defense moving forward considering they had a lot of newcomers but then when I went out to their opening practice and when Brian Jeffries was on the 3rd hour or the 1st hour he talked about how how much fun they were having and and I was the thing is last year like Brian said it was all about business and I think Rich Rod he's keeping his cards close to his chest he's being optimistic but not right pumping up this team as you said right oh I mean I could like you said with the newcomers coming in I think this is a blessing in disguise for the long haul and I think this year they're going to work out some kinks Tony Fields in college school or I think they're going to be phenomenal right I think they would be great defenders their goals I mean he's a newcomer he's not a true freshman but he's another newcomers there's a lot of kinks to work out but Marcella Gates is already established with this team I think this defense can surprise some people but I'm not banking on it I hear you on that I liked I liked a lot of what I saw from Marcel Yates last year it's difficult because you don't have near a what. Personnel are even close to it that's ideal but when you watched a lot of their teams though when you watch a lot of their games they would be in it for like the 1st half and it would be kind of a smoke and mirrors approach where wow are we really getting pressure on the quarterback are we really are we really won't we don't really force turnovers but yeah I mean but it's only 17 to 10 and a half right now I mean there was a lot of that that went in there and then the 2nd half they would usually get steamrolled because they just didn't have the depth they didn't have the horses they didn't have the size right there but I saw enough from Marcel Yates though to at least leave me pretty intrigued by what he could do with some real talent Now again this I'm not saying that this team is littered with n.f.l. Defenders all over but I do think that for the 1st time you have a lot of guys that are physically capable which I think is a big departure from the previous season yeah a lot of people forget that Marcel Gates came right around the spring ball period last year so he didn't really have a chance to bring guys in right he was pretty much playing with the the cards that were dealt with big time so I mean you can't really hate on the guy for having such a part defense but now he's got guys that he's recruited he's bringing in players that he wants that could fit his team so I mean this year I mean more specifically the 1st 2 games 1st 3 games is really going to be an experiment I am really excited to see Tony Fields a linebacker I'm really I mean he came in he was obviously in early in Rowley which I think just doesn't a measurable amount of good for you and he came in at about 61195 or whatever and now he's about 61 to 30 and when you watch him I mean you've seen him he's a big boy I mean he's physically he looks the part in a big way in a way that some of the previous linebackers probably really didn't and then you look at the defensive backfield you've got a lot of guys that the fact that they were able to move Cruikshank who I don't think is that good to be honest with you but they were able to they felt comfortable moving him. Out of the corner spot and bringing and Lorenzo Burns I think is actually a pretty good sign because I don't know that you are doing that if you don't think that the guys that you have behind him will acquit themselves in a good way I think that move specifically when you're talking about being Christian is not that good I don't think he's as good of a man to man defense I agree but it is only great so that's why I think moving him to safety was a business move I mean even though their years I think that he's going to play in the n.f.l. Now now I'm here but I'm not I'm not I'm not saying that but but Arizona is stacked at safety I mean we talked about Troy and Scott a young no relationship at all but they're phenomenal players and also another player that a lot of people are sleeping on the I think you have a big impact in case injuries happen is Jerry is Wallace he's not big right he's quick but you and you've heard you've heard some pretty good things about him another kid from the south Yeah so if he's a guy too that you know again you don't hear a ton about but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's getting big time snaps here at some point fairly soon into the season Same with obviously I think Demetrius is the quarterback on that defense right there they need him they need Flanagan fouls to have a he needs to have an all conference caliber season I believe I think that he's care again you know other guy that's capable I need. I need not only do I need him to I don't want him to have necessarily a ton of tackles because that's not the Curtis thing for his safety but I'd like to see them use him in the verity of ways I'd like to see you know get some tackles for loss get some Russian or a pass off the edge gets a pass to flex and make take what you did last year and turn it up a notch into making some game breaking type plays and that's also another thing is Pro Football Focus had him as the number one play maker defensive player in the back 12 which I was kind of I was stunned because like you said there was no interceptions there was no there there weren't these huge strips sacks exactly So yeah again I will I like the folks at Pro Football Focus I think that's a great site but I'd would love to see that really manifest itself in a way that we can watch and be like oh just Tremaine Bond was a guy like that not. Not a physical specimen but a guy that every game it seemed that he had a few forced a big turnover it seemed every game game in game out he was that guy that was just around the ball in some way and I'd love to see them be able to do that again you have a job done right he really did and it goes to show you to him because he was not a big guy he was you know 51185 something like that but he always made plays you know he's a rapper in Las Vegas now is. X x maniac flame x. Maniac The claim is he is he is really good new like a rap I like bad rap I like great rap but days of his I Have hot is it.
