Quite a dangerous situation there. Yes, actually, a very dangerous situation here. We have this storm. It has winds gusting nearly 300 Kilometers Per Hour out here at times. You can see on the satellite picture the cloud cover dominating all of the island even looking at some of the feeder bands back there towards the japanese islands bringing precipitation there and closing schools down towards manila. But lets talk about the center of this storm and where these dangerous winds are. Heres a look at the radar imagery just prior to landfall. Now this eye has kind of deteriorated, but a few hours ago this was maintaining that inner circle, that eye wall. And that is why were already seeing reports of damage out here. We were looking at winds up to 200 Kilometers Per Hour reported. Some of the remote areas could be higher. A storm chaser james reynolds, took these photos. This is some of the damage, windows blown in on this hotel. Cars overturned, just thrown around like toys out here in some of these very high winds. Definitely that just gives you an idea how dangerous this is. Even on Orchid Island just southeast of taiwan, you have winds up to 256 Kilometers Per Hour. Good news, there was mandatory evacuations in place out there. Thats one of the big things. There was widespread evacuations. Many troops put out to tell people to get away from the coastal areas. Even in southeastern taiwan, taitung, people are used to these kind of storms. But this is the first of the own. We havent seen oneit taiwan since sobilor last year. Hopefully people took the proper preparations. This is still moving off towards the north. Winds at 234 Kilometers Per Hour. But the winds always a big issue, but its also the rainfall. And every time we talk about storms hitting taiwan, were talking about the precipitation. This is just the accumulated precip since midnight taiwan time and along the eastern side of this, were looking at up to 300 to 400 millimeters. Notice it just stops like a wall here. Thats that spine of mountains that runs through the middle of taiwan. That squeezes out all of that moisture. Its already been doing so and more precipitation is expected. Definitely flooding and landslides will be a major issue as we go ahead flu tthrough the of the day. Thanks very much our meteorologist robert speta. Hell be back later in the program with more. Police in taipei are investigating the cause of an explosion on a commuter train. They say 25 managers or rather passengers are injured. The explosion ripped through a carriage thursday night before before the train arrived at a station in central taipei. When police investigated they found a suspicious device. Translator what i saw was an explosive device on one of the seats. It looked like a firecracker and was about this long. Police say the injured passengers are being treated in hospitals. Britains vote to leave the European Union is giving many Japanese Firms second thoughts on doing business in the uk, but executives at hitachi say theyre going to team up with another Japanese Firm for a local venture. Our ai uchida joins us from the business desk. Whats the plan here . Hitachis partner has agreed to Work Together in britains Nuclear Power plant business. They hope the tieup will help speed up hitachis local efforts. The companys british subsidiary has been developing two Nuclear Reactors utilizing the firms leadingedge technology. The japan atomic power Officials Say theyll use their knowhow to help hitachi gain government approval. They also expect to take part in planning for maintaining the reactors after they go into operation. An hitachi official notes uncertainties ahead including the Exchange Rate effects. But he says the British Government will go ahead with the project as planned. Foreign investors sold far more shares than they bought during the First Six Months of this year as major forces in japan. A stronger yen and uncertainty over china and the britains exit from the European Union or brexit prompted traders to avoid risk. Officials at the Tokyo Stock Exchange say sales topped purchases by about 47 billion from january to june. It was the first time in two years that overseas investors sold more than they bought in the first half. And the figure was up five fold from the same period in 2014. Market sources say its uncertain how far the impact of brexit will spread. They say that for the time being, investors will likely react every time a new source of concern emerges. And with that, lets check on markets. This first week of july, wall street ended mixed on thursday ahead of the key jobs data due for release later on friday. The Dow Jones Industrial average ending down just about 0. 1 whereas the techheavy nasdaq ended higher by about 0. 3 . Lets see how tokyo is reacting to this. Ramin mellegard is at the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Good morning. Tell us what you are seeing over there. Very good morning to you, ai. Weve seen a little bit of Risk Appetite return. But all eyes will be on the u. S. Jobs data later today. So we may see a little bit of hesitancy from investors building up to that, but lets have a look at how the nikkei and the topix are kick off friday, july 8th. 15375 up 0. 65 for the nikkei, broader topix up as well. The nikkei closed lower for a third day in a row on thursday, way down by that persistently strong yen which again has been bought by investors as a bit of a hedge against perceived risk. And thats, of course, due to the uncertainty of the fallout of brexit. Two weeks after the british vote. Now, in fact, weve seen a frenzy of activity in British Commercial real estate funds, and thats because of fears of a wave of redemptions by investors, and thats, of course, also kept the pressure on sterling, and thats caused investors to shift money or park their money, so to speak, into what they consider safer assets such as the japanese yen, gold and government bonds. Now, despite some calm in the markets ahead of u. S. Nonfarm payrolls and employment data, theyll be gearing up for the upper house elections in japan this weekend. Prime minister shinzo abes policies which will be squarely on the minds of investors also a big focus. Weve had the stronger yen. Weve had negative Interest Rates being imposed and also the continuous battle against falling prices or deflation, which continues to grip market players. Ai . Absolutely. Ramin, with all that in mind were seeing further weakness in the dollar and thats despite some supportive data. Give us an update on whats going on . Exactly. The dollar yen has been the big focus. 100. 85 to 87. Now, given the supportive data was, of course, in the form of an uptick in adp private Sector Employment for june. And that always comes out ahead of the main jobs data. Jobless claims fell last week. Still, given the fact that the fed has already pointed to the negative impact relating to brexit, even a solid reading of u. S. Jobs data may not sway Central Bank Policy according to central bank watchers. Lets get an idea of other asian indexes trading right now so far this morning. Seouls cokospi is up and china markets open in an hour and a half and still a lot of focus on shanghai composite. It ended flat yesterday. Buyers staying away from the mainland index. Concerns about the yuan weakness and nonperforming loans in china. Thats all for me. Back to you, ai. Sounds good, ramin. Well check in with you later none the day. Ramin mellegard from the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Tokyos ubiquitous bicycles clog up the street, so the city is experimenting with bicycle sharing. If the plan takes off, it could change the way transport in one of the worlds busiest cities works. This is a port for shared bicycles in tokyo. Members of the sharing scheme pay about 1. 50 for every 30 minutes. The service is popular. Bikes are borrowed here about 90,000 times a month. Translator i use it almost every day for commuting to work. The bicycles are very easy to use and very friendly and convenient. Reporter there are currently about 1,800 bicycles at about 160 ports in the city. Salaryman mawasaki is a frequent user. He bicycles from the station to his office every day. Translator it feels great and really freshens up my body and mind. Reporter yamazaki says the biggest plus is the freedom to pick up and drop off the bike whenever he wants. Translator if i feel tired, i can take the train. I dont need to worry because i can just leave the bicycle at a port. Reporter one of the keys to the service is a gps installed on all the bicycles. Smart devices are used to find out how many bicycles are available nearby and then reserve them. The Data Collected is used to finetune the system. Because bikes are borrowed and dropped off at will, one headache is how to make sure they are evenly spread around the ports. So the system operator transfers bicycles by truck from the crowded ports, making sure that rides are always available. But it isnt all plain sailing. The average bicycle is used just 1. 5 times per day. The fees collected are not enough to pay for the service. The key to boosting use lies in making the bikes easy to reach. This shows where the ports are located. The yellow strip shows the 300meter radius, which is believed to be the desirable distance for users to reach a port. The operator thinks that by putting ports in this vacant strip colored red, it can increase use. Officials with tokyos chi ode da ward are looking for candidate sites for new ports. Translator we are looking for sites under pedestrian bridges or beside roads. Reporter chiyoda ward officials hope to increase the number of ports by a third. Translator wed like to normalize the system as a third means of transportation after trains and buses. Reporter bicycle sharing is spreading. But making it a common way to move around will need some hard strategic thinking. All right. Thats the latest in business for this hour. Ill leave you with a check on markets. As weve been reporting, people in taiwan are feeling the impact of a powerful typhoon, quite a dangerous situation there. Our meteorologist robert speta has the latest. Yes, our storm is still tracking over the island here and definitely bringing these very dangerous winds. Actually seeing damage reports, overturned cars, downed trees over the southeastern area of the island.
