A magnitude nine earthquake struck northeastern japan at 2 46 p. M. On march11. It unleashed a towering tsunami, waves higher than 10 meters slammed into coastal towns and cities destroying everything in their path. More than 15,000 people died and about 2600 others are still list sues into the atmosphere. Contaminating areas on land and at sea. Tepco says the decommissioning process will take decades. More than 228,000 people are living in temporary housing or with family and friends because of the disaster and the Nuclear Accident. Planners and work crews have spent the past four years cleaning up and rebuilding. Many of the items swept inland by the tsunami have been removed, everything from ships to giant advertisements, but a number of people have been pushing to preserve some reminders of this unprecedented disaster. Its a different story in fukushima, though. The aftermath of the Nuclear Accident means people there can only collect small items, and even thats hard nhk world has the story. A road sign mangled by the power of the sea. A poster for a festival that never took place. A clock frozen in time marking the moment the earthquake struck. Finding it helped him understand his teams mission. The idea came to me that this could be the only physical evidence that shows people did indeed live here. We followed takahashi on his team when they visited the restricted area in december. They went to a Community Hole that was used as an evacuation shelter shortly after the disaster. You really see the whole picture here how quickly people had to leave without having time to clean up. The residents were fleeing the radiation, the invisible threat is still a concern. Takahashi and his team need to check the level of radiation for each item. Only the one that meets Safety Standards can be taken back through the museum. These newspapers are okay. They carried details of the disaster. And were supposed to go out to readers march 12th. But they were abandoned before they gave him to takahashi. Even our memories of the disaster are fading away gradually. I was only thinking that records of what happened must be passed down to future againgenerations. Last month takahashis team put about 40 of the objects they collected on display. Even though the items are inanimate, visitors can feel their stories. I used to walk and jog in this neighborhood. It might sound like an exaggeration, but a dream about this place, so in that sense im thankful moments such as these have been preserved. Even visitors from outside fukushima are impressed by the collection. I feel these items directly convey how these peoples lives were suddenly disconnected and how cruel their situation was. Some people may say these objects are part of a negative legacy it wont stay negative if we learn lessons and build a better world. Takahashi and his team want that too. So theyll continue to collect the objects, hoping to tell stories of an unprecedented disaster and its painful aftermath. Nhk world fukushima. The head of the u. S.
