Scuffles have broken out in hong kong. Police intervened after supporters of chinese rule clashed for the first time with prodemocracy protesters. Tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets, but peacefully, setting up protest signs and tents bringing parts of the city to a standstill. Talks with officials were meant to be slated for friday. Prodemocracy protesters in hong kongs standing their ground for the seventh day. But now the mood seems to be changing. This was the scene in another part of the city just a few hours earlier. A man wrestled to the ground, accused of being a china supporter. He says he was just trying to get home. How could one person fight so many persons . Fueling the tension, this incident. Scuffles broke out in the mong kok it district after a group of men tried to dismantle barricades. Some say ordinary hong kongers are fed up with the disruption. The leader appealed to calm and told all demonstrators to go home. I do not want to see any citizens, especially teenagers, get hurt in the confrontation. I already called on the police to do all they can to restore order and protect the safety of all citizens. And despite what the police say were efforts to protect prodemocracy demonstrators, the students have called off talks with the government. I think we will continue our occupying actions, and im still, we will go to discuss with students in determining further actions. With the talks on hold and neither side to budge, the situation is back to square one, with all parties now contemplating their next step. Freedom of speech, freedom of speech andrew wood is standing by live in hong kong. This situation appears the most unstable we have seen since the protests began two weeks ago. Things are turning quite nasty. Earlier today, earlier yester day, its 3 00 sunday morning in hong kong. Late friday afternoon groups of what protesters called thugs started to attack them and tried to dismantle barricades they set up. They said they were acting, the counterdemonstrators, were supporting the police. The police try to separate the two. Things got worse. There have been many reports of attacks by counterdemonstrators, and lost of the lots of the prodemocracy protesters are angry, saying the police are standing by while the counterdemonstrators have done things like sexual harassed women and generally beat people up or use violence. Let me break in and ask you, what have the police said about these accusations of basically standing and letting these thoughts do what they thugs do it they want with the protesters . They say thats not the case. They have also said protesters have been warned about them, and that they will need to moveon at some point. Theres lots of rumors spreading through the prodemocracy movement. It is very difficult to tell whether there is any truth in them or not. They say that these gangsters have been hired to beat them up and clear the street, but the communist cadres whether it is true or not, it doesnt really matter, because that is what the prodemocracy protesters seem to believe. This may actually increase support for prodemocracy protesters. It seems to have done an awful lot of damage to the reputation of the police here, who have been rebuilding their relationship with the protesters quite well over the last couple days. Andrew wood, thank you very much. Turning to other world news, turkey says it will not let kobani fall. The syrian town near turkeys order is under siege, the latest flashpoint of Islamic State militants trying to gain control of the border area. They have been bombing the outskirts and have now almost entirely encircle it with tanks, launching strikes on the town itself. There are warnings of a massacre. Kurdish peshmerga troops are desperately fighting to defend the border town of kobani against the Islamic State onslaught. They are having a hard time against the better equipped i. S. Militia. Huge explosions can be seen across the border in turkey. Refugees are streaming across the frontier. More than 180,000 kurds from the region are thought to have sought refuge in turkey. Islamic state plundered and destroyed our village. They murdered our children. Thats when we fled to kobani. We did not want to come here, and now we have to escape from them once again. I. S. Has already conquered large parts of syria and iraq, and it is now right on the kurdish border. Kobani is the last kurdish bastion in northern syria, and i. S. Has him was surrounded it. Many hope the turkish army could turn the tide. Parliament has approved operations abroad and turkish tanks are on the border. The Prime Minister says turkey will not stand back. We would not one kobani to fall. We welcome the people who came from there. We will do whatever we can to prevent this from happening. But Turkeys Defense Ministry says it is in no hurry to intervene. Despite warnings, i. S. Plans another massacre. Kurdish units are doing every thing they can to hold kobani. They hope turkey will come to their aid before it is too late. Reporter Hannah Lucinda smith is not far from kobani, and joins us now on the line. You have spoken to some of the tens of thousands fleeing the violence. What about those who stayed behind . There are still some people left behind in kobani. Lots of people left. There are people who just cannot get out, the very old people, the disabled people. I spoke to one man who said he was very worried about his 80yearold father in town, who he has not been able to contact. A very difficult situation. Tell us about turkey entering this war on i. S. What difference will it make if turkish troops engage in combat . For kobani itself, it would make a huge difference. What we seee at the moment, the Kurdish Militia are fighting with kalashnikovs, and Islamic State has tanks, shells, using everything they have. If the turkish army came in, they could bring heavy weaponry and extra manpower. Its not just kobani. Islamic state has taken control of a huge swathe of syria and iraq. What makes kobani so important for i. S. , by also but also the u. S. Led alliance . Kobani lies right in the middle of the swathe of control. They control a large stretch of the turkishsyrian border, and kobani is in the middle of the area of control. It is important for turkey, because what you have in kobani is a kurdish population. In turkey, theres tengion with the carrots, and turkey kurds, and turkeys own kurds are getting angry they are not doing enough. Ankara will be worried. We have to leave it there. Thank you very much for your report from kobani. The German Military has begun flying in aid to liberian capital fof monrovia. Still to come after a short break, 25 years after the fall of the berlin wall, germans celebrate unity day. We will speak to our correspondent in hanover and visit an eastern germantown to gauge the mood, 25 years after the wall. We will be right back. Welcome back. Germany has been celebrating the day of german unity. On october3rd, 1990, the former east and western german states were officially reunited. A ceremony was held in the city of hanover, with on paying tribute to those who made reunification possible. Merkel grew up in the former east, and she says the history of german and european unity can serve as a lesson for the globes current conflicts. The official day of german unity celebrations began with a Church Service in hanover. A lens that christian alon gside christians, jewish and Islamic Religious officials took part. Then at the official ceremony, around 1000 guests watched an emotionally charged game show trade show that told stage show that told the story of german unification. Angela merkel said east and west would not have come together without the courage of east germans who protested for democracy before the berlin wall came down. She also said there was no longer a clear economic divide between the former east and west. These days there are economically attractive regions all over the country. University found that attract more and more people, and regions all over the country that has struggling economies and that and debt and problems. Merkel spoke about the problems facing germany and the international community. She said a spirit of unity is that germany to join the fight against Islamic State. Gave mighty tempting not to even begin the struggle, to help the problem solve itself. But it will not. It is a challenge for the whole world. Not just for the United States, and not just for the arab world. It involves all of us who believe in the phrase Human Dignity is inviolable. This was not just a celebration to mark german unification, but also the countrys solidarity with its international partners. Our reporter simon young was at the celebrations in hanover, and he sent us this report. It was an emotional speech, as you might expect for a chancellor from the east of germany, who herself always looks back to the events in 1989 when the berlin wall fell at this time of year. And that was noticeable. I think i saw a tear in the corner of the chancellors eye at one point. One of the most interesting things about the speech, and it was mentioned in the report, was the way the chancellor drew out a line through history from those demonstrators on the streets of eastern germany back in the dying days of communist east germany, who were protesting for civil rights, for human rights, for freedom of speech, freedom to travel, and the possibility of a brighter economic future. She said, that is the same spirit that ought to inform germany today as it seeks its place in the international community. It is what ought to inspire the way germany deals with european questions. It is important that europe sticks to what it has promised to do, that it shows it believes in its principles. For instance, in ukraine it is that same civil and democratic rights that are being trampled underfoot, as she put it. She did not mention russia by name, but she certainly seems to see there is a link between what happened in eastern germany and led to the reunification of germany 25 years ago, and what we are seeing in the world today. All right. Simon young for us, reporting in hanover. Thank you very much. To the United States now, where the on employment rate has fallen below 6 for the first time in six years. The u. S.
