In hours long meetings, he tried to reassure the europeans about his bosss stance. Today is my privilege it is my privilege on behalf of President Trump to commit our strong commitment to partnership with the European Union. Whatever our differences, our two continents share the same heritage, the same values, and above all, the same purpose. That is a major change of tone. Donald trump welcome to the brexit vote and has been at times seeming to lobby for the breakup of the European Union. Protesters criticize that, as well as the muslim travel ban and the treatment of minorities. They are importing american problems into our society and i disagree with the way they are handling it and the way that they are sending different people up against each other, where we should be collaborating in working together. We dont want to work live in a world run by people with these values. We want to believe in the freedom of speech and equality and equal rights for all. That is not what the Trump Administration supports. While his visit is likely to dispel the concerns of many leaders, officials in brussels say that they are encouraged by his statements. What they will be watching closely to see how far Donald Trumps actions match his deputys words. Brent all right, with me here in the studio is security analyst marcos [indiscernible]. We heard the u. S. Vice president speak today. How reassuring were his words . . His words . Marcos thats a good question. We heard a very comforting reassurance at the security conference. We heard a similar speech today in brussels. But there are two caveats. The first one, is he really representing the u. S. President , his preferences and interests . The other thing is he didnt talk about concrete politics. I mean, he was talking about common values, the cornerstone of u. S. Policy being the European Union and nato, but he didnt talk about the u. S. Russia relationship. The common fight against isil. Or today in brussels about the future of tea cap ttip. Brent how are european leaders supposed to sort this out moving forward with the u. S. President praising brexit as an example of true democracy and people retaking control of their government and in the Vice President saying that the u. S. Remains the best friend of the European Union . Markus absolutely, there is some kind of dichotomy in u. S. Policy, currently. The overarching concern in europe is that the u. S. Administration aims at replacing a multilateral approach to the European Union or towards nato by some kind of special relationships, not only to london but two other selected countries in europe. Therefore i think the overarching goal of Angela Merkel is to keep the europeans together as much as possible. Brent what about nato . Did you get the sense that the Vice President sees it moving forward as an antiislamist force . Markus not really. I think it has been on the agenda to a certain degree. But there hasnt been so much progress so far. They could the key question is the 2 debate about additional defense spending. We have to admit that the Trump Administration has accomplished something. The debate isnt over about unfair burden sharing among the United States and european allies and the europeans did not take any concrete measures in the last decade or years. Brent are you surprised that that is a topic now . It seems that the white house now only measures contributions in hardware military terms, but what about soft power . What about the peacemaking operations . Mediation . Dont they have some value . Germany, europe, to a certain degree, there is a different understanding of the responsibility of burden sharing. Germany, thats a good case in which they took the leadership with putin and more responsibility and, for example, the german commitment to deploy troops to the molly operation of the united nations, unseen so far, read here as a additional commitment to international organizations. Rallies have been taking place outside the houses of parliament in london against the bill related to brexit and against the u. S. President , donald trump. Demonstrators gathered to protest against the bill around britain leaving the European Union. The house of lords has begun two days of debate on the bill. Meanwhile, members of the house of commons debated a petition to trump to pay a state visit to britain. My colleague was at those protests and spoke to one of the demonstrators, beginning by asking him why he was there. In particular today is migrants day, the first day of the house of lords getting a chance to discuss the terms by which u. K. Probably wont, but i suppose will, eventually, an act brexit. We need to take every single day that we have the opportunity to do so to make our voices heard on a wide range of increasingly connected issues. These have to do with the visit of donald trump, i suppose . Of course. It has been changed, now they tell us that it will be birmingham rather than london, and opinion in an attempt to avoid the protests. But he is normalizing and epitomizing the same issues, whether they be inappropriately blaming migrants for issues that are something up their fault, they are the faults of policies enacted by the government over the course of the last years and decades, whether it be racism in all forms, whether it be appalling, appalling gender stereotypes and actions there. They are connected, i wouldnt want to express that they are the same things. It is rage against the system that has let people down. In the past few weeks arrests have been made in deportations carried out as activists try to reassure people and advise them how to hate if authorities knock on the door. Marybelle torres has come to learn more about the latest series of raids. The mother of two children has been living in the United States illegally for 12 years. And very scared that i might be separated from my children and family. My children are very scared, too, so we have to prepare for this case. The Trump Administration says it is mainly deporting undocumented immigrants with a criminal record, but many here are still afraid. Community activist and zollars mark votto organized the meeting. Lawyers specializing in immigration laws are also attending, saying that it goes too far. Everyone has rights. What we are talking about tonight are the rights and how people prepare themselves. Also in their families, we will give them an emergency packet or they will put the information from their children, their church, their bank accounts, that they can use in case of emergency. They have explained that no one needs to allow the police and to their homes without a search or arrest warrant. They say that neighbors can help by calling a lawyer if they see a raid. He wants to bring neighbors, regardless of whether they are u. S. Citizens, together into one community. Having the whole community being able to be here and supporting each other is definitely a positive thing for all of us. In the case of anything happening, they will show support and fight for each other. We have got to start here with folks like myself, reaching out to undocumented people in my community, supporting them when their lives are a little more in danger of being turned upside down. Government forces in iraq have moved closer to the western half of most of the second day of their offensive to recapture the city from the Islamic State. Around 750,000 civilians are believed to be living in the i. S. Controlled part of the city. Day number two in the battle for westernmost western mosul. Iraqi forces fighting to retake the strategic hilltop. It overlooks the airport, which they intend to use as their Main Operations base. They try to avoid it on the battlefield because when you get over there, you have a very good position to attacking the troops. That is why they are about four kilometers away from it. Besides, this position is closed on the highway between baghdad and amir and bundeswehr. And mosul. You have a position against the i. S. Fighters in the airport, which is expected to be a big military base for the fighters there. Brent you were embedded with iraqi forces, you have been on many times talking about that. The debt is not the main problem. It is financed in the longterm. More importantly, greece needs to regain the confidence of the markets.
