>> of come from the site of yet another massacre. 24 members -- at least 24 members of the same family were killed in their own home in an exit steam strike -- in an f-16 strike. during the sunset called a prayer come the time muslims break their fast. hit thisissile strike family in their home as they're sitting down deep. a grandmother, her three sons, their wives, and all their children were killed. i went to the site on where the highs -- where the house was. there's only a crater left. the surviving family members say they used to cranes and a bulldozer, working for 12 hours throughout the night to retrieve all the bodies. at the hospital morgue, it was a difficult scene. one of the dead was less than one year old. she was still in her pampers, d ead. a father of one of the women killed -- the bodies were dispersed. 14 and 1, 10 in the other. a father had to go to two hospitals to pick up one of his daughters bodies because half of her was in one hospital and have was in the other. this is the kind of tragedy we hear almost on a daily basis here in gaza. families are being wiped out in such massive numbers. one family lost 18 members in an airstrike last week. i went to the north the other day where eight were killed while watching tv when a tank shell, artillery shell hit their home. -- this is avery war and civilians are paying the highest prices for this. the killing doesn't seem to stop. >> the toll from sunday, the highest figure i saw was 120, more than one third women and children. there was this mass killing we just mentioned. you interviewed survivors and victims at the hospital. he went to the side of the attack. can you tell us what you know about what happened in shejaiya? >> from speaking to residents evacuating, it was very hard to get in. this attack again -- everyone says around sunset time. there was a barrage after barrage of tank shells that rain down on shejaiya, one of gaza's poorest, most densely populated neighborhoods. people said there was no help. they called for a militants is. paramedic workers said they could not get him because of the amount of shelling. people waited for hours. they were left alone. they finally decided to escape on foot. when we got there in the early morning sunday morning, there were just families streaming out, many of them carrying nothing. some were barefoot. were many families incomplete panic, trying to hail cars or trucks. they spoke of bodies strewn in the streets of shejaiya. it was hard to get into confirmed. some reporters did get in and confirmed reports and there was some footage of it. in the hospital, it was a very difficult scene, scenes of such indescribable anguish and loss. in the morgan shifa, there were two children, one was nine years old and her brother was seven years old next to her. what appeared to be relatives arguing about the name of the seven-year-old brother. his could not tell because head had been completely shorn off in this attack. these are the kinds of scenes of horror that become daily occurrence in gaza. there doesn't seem to be any end in sight to the bloodshed. >> we're also joined by dr. mads gilbert, under region dr. providing medical assistance in gaza, recently cemented a report to the u.n. on the state of the gaza health sector this year. can you talk about what is happening from where you are right now in shifa? we did not want you to wait. we understand our many people waiting to see you. i am, enforcement, breaking news to you in the u.s. israeli tanks shelled the in the middle zone of gaza about 10 minutes ago. four were killed, mainly patients treated and the surgical department, and 15 are injured. this is not the first attack on hospitals, unfortunately. the israeli army is directly shelling hospitals and killing patients and civilians. this is in violation of all international roles. it is completely income principle to me why the israeli army is not stopped when they attack hospitals and civilian populations. this has to stop. mr. obama has to step up and say enough is enough now. >> dr. gilbert, the renovation started thursday. what kinds of injuries have you been seen since then? >> i would just like to repeat that 10 minutes ago the israeli army shelled the hospital. this is a very dramatic step up in the situation. we so far have had over 3000 injured in gaza. among these, 1000 are children and 600 are women. that is far more than half. 515 have been killed. 120 our children and 50 women. the attacks and injuries we are seeing now, and the hospital is being crowd of an emergency with new attacks, burns, blast injuries, shrapnel, and what you can see from artillery shell bombings. lots of children still. it wouldrief hope that be a quiet morning. it has been very hectic. theambulances keep running. the worst that so far was the night before yesterday when the hospital received at least 400 injured and 73 dead. this was truly a massacre. the injuries were just horrible as your correspondent just mentioned. children came in without heads and totally dismantled by the shelling of the residential areas. , you came inilbert from norway to help the people of gaza. secretary of state john kerry has just called on your foreign minister to help negotiate a iase-fire, and apparently, believe he is find egypt. can you talk about the significance of this and norway's role? the significance from a medical point of view, there is one overwhelming lead up, and that is to stop the israeli bombardment. it is absolutely devastating. it is much harder than i have seen before in 2006, 2009, in 2012. the attacks then. it is targeting residential areas and now hospitals. of course, a cease-fire has to be broke in -- brokered immediately. it has to be done in a way that it is safeguarding the palestinian people and not just the pseudo-powers. the palestinian people are not yielding. they are standing tall. those in shifa are carrying the weight. i am only a very small part of this. way gaza will raise the white flag. if there are people who are dignified, they know their nohts, and they say this -- power, even if they try to kill us all, we will not surrender. so the cease-fire will save thousands of lives in gaza. we have now have 3200 injured, over 500 killed. israel has to stop the bombing. the siege of gaza must be lifted immediately. guardianlbert, the newspaper is reporting the israeli military is using shells and the offensive on gaza, weapons described as illegal under rules of humanitarian law. the way they're described is, they explode in the air above the target, sending out a count of thousands of tiny still darts , small darts. have you seen any of those wounds at shifa? >> i have been suspecting the same, because many of the wounds we see our precisely small fragment wounds. they're very hard to clean, to remove the small metal particles. if these are that type of bomb, i cannot confirm it, but it is no doubt a large number of injuries are fragmentation different sources of fragmentation. they could be in artillery shell and it could well be these explosives. >> dr. gilbert, the bombing of the hospital that you have just told us about, the news you're just broken, last week we spoke to the director of hospital who received a phone call from the israeli military telling him he was going to be targeted and wasesting that the hospital to liberally targeted. any indication that this hospital was deliberately attacked? question. a funny i mean, it is a hospital. the israelis know every single building in gaza. everything about gaza. of course, they know it is a hospital. there's no doubt. of course they know it is a hospital held with patients. theake it even worse, hospitals in the south of gaza are overwhelmed by patients because it is impossible to distribute the patients between north and south because it is so unsafe to travel. of course they knew they were shelling the hospital. it was just reported now on the news there were actually five killed in the shelling of this hospital in the midsection of gaza. es, shellingulanc civilians all amounts to war crimes. this is a war crime in the making. , thankdr. mads gilbert you for joining us. under we didn't dr. providing medical assistance in gaza. as we turn back to sharif abdel kouddous in gaza city right now. i should say dr. mads gilbert submitted a report to the u.n. on the state of the gaza health theor in 2014, even before israeli assault on gaza began. sharif, if you can talk about among the civilians that have died, a paramedic has died, another journalist has died. >> yes, amy. as i said, it was very hard for ambulances to get into shejaiya yesterday, but the paramedic drivers are extremely brave. they went into shejaiya to try to retrieve the wounded. one of them was hit in a direct hit. the picture of the and balance ambulance shows it is a chart, hunk of twisted metal. , an e-mail wasst sent to foreign correspondents, telling them hamas exploits shields andas human the israeli government will not be responsible for any damage or injury the journalist sustained while field reporting. the next day, a journalist was killed. let me also say the number of displaced is much higher than it in 2008, 2009. there's nowhere for people to go anymore. before the shejaiya attack, the numbers were 60,000 displaced. at the end of the day, it was 80,000. the u.n. was opening up different schools for people to come. they come with nothing. they come with maybe a blanket or pillow, but usually nothing else. they don't know when they will go home. they don't know if they will have a home when they go back or whether he will be destroyed. we often talk about the dead, but the vast numbers of wounded, 3000, these are not minor injuries. we are talking deep shrapnel wounds, amputations, and the psychological terror inflicted, especially on the children of gaza. it will have deep, lasting effects. by the u.n. plus own count, 60,000 children in gaza are needed in psychological treatment. needing psychological generation. this will last for generations. as i'm speaking to you, there has been shelling behind me and eastern parts of gaza city. this'll strikes happening. i can hear drones over me right now full top so this is something the gaza strip is bracing for, for more bloodshed. >> the fighting in shejaiya, that is where the israeli soldiers were killed, what do understand about the battles that occur between militants and the israeli soldiers? it looks like they put up a considerable fight. toit is very hard independently verify anything. what appears to have occurred is, according to different sources, either a tank or some kind of armored vehicle was attacked and destroyed by the armed wing of hamas and when the rescue team -- the israeli rescue team winning, four were killed. it looks -- began to different sayings, local ones, qassam is a much more prepared militarily than it was in 2008 and 2009, that it learned its atsons from 2008 and 2009 there is a gaza under gaza, with titles and a network where they operate -- with titles and a network where they operate. it seems to be true they fired many rockets into israel and the israeli military doesn't seem to be able to kill the militants. they're killing civilians and children. big -- ittwo very sounds like they're continuing naval artillery behind me. they continue to pop up into israel through these tunnels, which benjamin netanayahu says is the whole point of the ground invasion to destroy them. it seems that almost 20 israelis to come in so they can fight them. if you look to the right in the distance, i believe that is the shejaiya. you can see on the horizon, massive strikes, maybe two or three as the smoke is blowing up. i believe this is shejaiya where we had that massacre yesterday. these are the sounds we are hearing. a couple of clomid is from where we're standing now. >> sharif abdel kouddous, thank you. filing reports for "the nation" and we will have a link to those reports. speaking to us from gaza city. when we come back from break, we were be joined by raji sourani, palestinian human rights leader. he will speak to us from gaza as well. stay with us. ♪ [music break] >> this is democracy now!, democracynow.org, the war and peace report. i'm amy goodman with aaron maté. we are staying in gaza. in gaza city, where we're joined by raji sourani, an award-winning human rights lawyer. he is the director of the palestine center for human rights in gaza. he is on the board of the international federation for human rights. he received the robert f kennedy human rights award in 1991, twice named and amnesty international prisoner of conscience. in 2013, won the right livelihood award. raji sourani, we welcome you to democracy now! we ask you to describe the situation, at this point, and what you feel needs to happen. what you see here, what you see in shejaiya area, were yesterday the israelis committed a massacre against civilians. many people. 75 have been counted. almost 400 dead. many injured with very serious injuries. 150,000 fled the area. the significance from a medical point of view, there is one overwhelming lead up, and that is to stop the israeli bombardment. it is absolutely devastating. it is much harder than i have seen before in 2006, 2009, in 2012. the attacks then. it is targeting residential areas and now hospitals. of course, a cease-fire has to be broke in -- brokered immediately. it has to be done in a way that it is safeguarding the palestinian people and not just the pseudo-powers. the palestinian people are not yielding. they are standing tall. those in shifa are carrying the weight. i am only a very small part of this. way gaza will raise the white flag. if there are people who are dignified, they know their nohts, and they say this -- power, even if they try to kill us all, we will not surrender. so the cease-fire will save thousands of lives in gaza. we have now have 3200 injured, over 500 killed. israel has to stop the bombing. the siege of gaza must be lifted immediately. guardianlbert, the newspaper is reporting the israeli military is using shells and the offensive on gaza, weapons described as illegal under rules of humanitarian law. the way they're described is, they explode in the air above the target, sending out a count of thousands of tiny still darts , small darts. have you seen any of those wounds at shifa? >> i have been suspecting the same, because many of the wounds we see our precisely small fragment wounds. they're very hard to clean, to remove the small metal particles. if these are that type of bomb, i cannot confirm it, but it is no doubt a large number of injuries are fragmentation different sources of fragmentation. they could be in artillery shell and it could well be these explosives. >> dr. gilbert, the bombing of the hospital that you have just told us about, the news you're just broken, last week we spoke to the director of hospital who received a phone call from the israeli military telling him he was going to be targeted and wasesting that the hospital to liberally targeted. any indication that this hospital was deliberately attacked? question. a funny i mean, it is a hospital. the israelis know every single building in gaza. everything about gaza. of course, they know it is a hospital. there's no doubt. of course they know it is a hospital held with patients. theake it even worse, hospitals in the south of gaza are overwhelmed by patients because it is impossible to distribute the patients between north and south because it is so unsafe to travel. of course they knew they were shelling the hospital. it was just reported now on the news there were actually five killed in the shelling of this hospital in the midsection of gaza. es, shellingulanc civilians all amounts to war crimes. this is a war crime in the making. , thankdr. mads gilbert you for joining us. under we didn't dr. providing medical assistance in gaza. as we turn back to sharif abdel kouddous in gaza city right now. i should say dr. mads gilbert submitted a report to the u.n. on the state of the gaza health theor in 2014, even before israeli assault on gaza began. sharif, if you can talk about among the civilians that have died, a paramedic has died, another journalist has died. >> yes, amy. as i said, it was very hard for ambulances to get into shejaiya yesterday, but the paramedic drivers are extremely brave. they went into shejaiya to try to retrieve the wounded. one of them was hit in a direct hit. the picture of the and balance ambulance shows it is a chart, hunk of twisted metal. , an e-mail wasst sent to foreign correspondents, telling them hamas exploits shields andas human the israeli government will not be responsible for any damage or injury the journalist sustained while field reporting. the next day, a journalist was killed. let me also say the number of displaced is much higher than it in 2008, 2009. there's nowhere for people to go anymore. before the shejaiya attack, the numbers were 60,000 displaced. at the end of the day, it was 80,000. the u.n. was opening up different schools for people to come. they come with nothing. they come with maybe a blanket or pillow, but usually nothing else. they don't know when they will go home. they don't know if they will have a home when they go back or whether he will be destroyed. we often talk about the dead, but the vast numbers of wounded, 3000, these are not minor injuries. we are talking deep shrapnel wounds, amputations, and the psychological terror inflicted, especially on the children of gaza. it will have deep, lasting effects. by the u.n. plus own count, 60,000 children in gaza are needed in psychological treatment. needing psychological generation. this will last for generations. as i'm speaking to you, there has been shelling behind me and eastern parts of gaza city. this'll strikes happening. i can hear drones over me right now full top so this is something the gaza strip is bracing for, for more bloodshed. >> the fighting in shejaiya, that is where the israeli soldiers were killed, what do understand about the battles that occur between militants and the israeli soldiers?
