the race for the g-o-p presidential nomination is switching course here in iowa. a new des moines register poll released yesterday shows texas senator ted cruz leading longtime front-runner donald trump. cruz sits 10 points higher at 31 percent, in this poll of a little more than 400 iowa republicans. trump is still in 2nd place, with 21 percent support. dr. ben carson, who once held now in 3rd place with 13 percent. florida senator marco rubio runs in 4th place. he is the only other candidate in the field of 13 who is in the double digits, with 10 percent support. cruz has gained momentum over the past 30 days. last weekend in cedar rapids, he acknowledge d that jump in the polls. cruz believed more conservatives are choosing him now, after evaluating other candidates. though donald trump sits in second place in iowa, he's still out in front in many national polls. new jersey governor chris christie is still far behind trump in the g-o-p field. yesterday, he attributed trump's national lead to constant media coverage. "75 million of free airtime for donald trump so far and people wonder why he is ahead in the polls - you keep talking about him and that is what is gonna happen. " that was christie in new hampshire. christie also defended trump saying he's not hateful or a bigot. "on the last day she would ever attend school, she wore a new pink dress and her favorite pair of boots." kcrg-tv9 news. aircare took an edgewood woman after her car ran into a manure spreader. the iowa state patrol says 74-year-old verna lenth tried to swerve to avoid a tractor on gunder road near postville on friday night. they say her vehicle ran into it, sending her into oncoming traffic. she ended up colliding with an s-u-v. air med flew lenth to a hospital in la crosse, wisconsin. just to the west, air care took another woman to the hospital, after a crash near clermont. the state patrol says 30-year-old lacey nagel of waukon hit a deer on highway 18, causing her to enter the opposite lane of traffic. her car collided head-on with an s-u-v driven by 58-year-old susan roberts. air care took roberts to a la crosse, wisconsin hospital. a driver in downtown cedar rapids damaged a car and the side of a building. last night, police responded to a crash near 8th avenue and 6th street southeast a little before 7. officers say a man drove and then smashed into the side of a building. as you can see, the car is about halfway through the front door of that building. the driver of the car initially hit was not hurt. an ambulance took the driver of the other car that went into the building to the hospital with minor injuries. officials say a man tried assaulting a police officer, after he stole food from a grocery store in cedar falls. investigators say a man charged at a police officer in the college square manor parking lot, near hy-vee. cedar falls police went to the store after 6 saturday morning. they got a report that 33-year-old michael myers was stealing food and had assaulted two people inside the store. home and investigators say myers rushed the officer as he was getting out of his patrol car. the officer subdued myers with a taser. myers is now facing robbery and assault charges. an iowa supreme court ruling will limit state patrol troopers and conduct vehicle searches without warrants. the des moines register reports the court came to a 5-2 decision on friday. the ruling came in the case of robert pardee, who is fighting to get back more than 33- thousand dollars a trooper seized during a 20-12 search. troopers found small amounts of marijuana, but pardee was never charged. the trooper searched the car because it appeared 'lived-in'. the nation-wide average for a gallon of gas has dropped to 2 dollars and 2 cents. that's down 58 cents from this time last year. triple-a expects that average to fall below 2 dollars in the next few days. south carolina has the cheapest gas, at 1 dollar, 79 cents. we have similar prices here in eastern iowa. california has the highest prices, at 2 dollars, 65 cents. today, an eastern iowa teenager is reliving a big surprise! yesterday, 14-year-old thought she was going to clarke university to discuss her wish with the "make a wish foundation". little did she know, she would walk into this .... she always wanted a flash mob, and the organization granted that wish, along with a trip to disney world. more than 100 people showed up to dance and cheer. sarah's classmates and members of a "jazzercise" studio made up the group. she said the surprise made her feel incredibly happy.
