"i'm not afraid to say i am a convinced communist. i feel honored to be a communist and i hope i will be to the last bre castro nationalized american businesses and joined forces with the soviet union. the u-s retaliated by breaking off diplomatic relations with cuba and imposing a trade embargo. in 1961 president john f kennedy approved a cia invasion force of 13 hundred cuban exiles who went ashore at the bay of pigs. castro was able to fend off the invasion but in 1962 american spy planes discovered he had allowed the soviets to put nuclear missles in cuba. he was a major leader in the cuba missle crisis that brought the u-s and soviet union to the "i have directed the armed forces to prepare for any eventualities." us naval vessels moved in and the soviets backed down in exchange for a pledge that america would not attack cuba. castro was furious and said the soviets used him as a pawn in a game of nuclear chess between two titans. abc's barbara walters interviewed the cuban dictator years later about the crisis. "yes we were very close to nuclear war. very close." castro continued to promote leftist movements in the caribbean, central america and africa sending in cuban troops. during that time even his critit the soviet sytle economy eventually produced dissent. in 1980, more than 125 thousand cubans, some expelled, many allowed to leave, braved rough seas and hydrion reach america in the marielatl the early 1990's the falof e u llions of dollars in soviet st ortag d rationing.
