" recent polls show the state of ohio is a tossup between clinton and trump. nationally, the latest cnn poll shows clinton with a 5 blum and democrat monica vernon have agreed to debate next week. they're both running for iowa's first district -- which covers waterloo, cedar rapids and dubuque. kcrg-tv9 and the gazette will host the debate at coe college on wednesday, october 26th. you can watch it on kcrg 9-point-2, starting at 7 o'clock. political campaigns are paying attention to ballots but haven't returned them. that's according to the director of the lor-es college poll. the iowa secretary of state's office says almost 100,000 fewer people have requested an absentee ballot this year as compared to the 2012 presidential election. experts say that information will likely cause campaign workers to try to get in touch with people who haven't yet requested an absentee ballot. especially those voters who haven't voted early to vote in the past. "they kno and they'll actually track whether you have returned it. so for them it's a way of saying 'ok, we've got your vote, we know you are done. we don't have to keep calling you, we don't have to keep coming to your door.' " when they're looking at those numbers, no one can see who voters have voted for. but they can tell if the voter is registered at a republican, democrat or independent. today you can drop off any unwanted prescription drugs at dozens of locations in enforcement agency's 12th annual drug take back day. the dea's campaign is designed to cut down on prescription drug overdoses. in cedar rapids, drop off locations are set up at the police department and the linn county sheriff's office. in waterloo, the police department is hosting a drug drop off on the city's west side. you can take them to greenwood pharmacy near ridgeway and kimball avenues. and in dubuaue, the city's drug task force is collecti list of drop off locations on kcrg dot com. there's some good news for drivers in cedar rapids this morning. construction is now complete on 42nd street northeast near i-380. the city had been doing pavement and utility work there since spring. it also added turn and bike lanes. this was one of the largest road projects for the city this year. the construction was part of the city's some classrooms in cedar rapids are going to start looking a bit more like a coffee shop than a classroom. mckinley middle school is trying out flexible learning. teachers are using it to change up the learning environment and keep up with the modern day student. the students are part of the process, telling their teachers what would help them learn better. they say it creates excitement around learning and improves the atmosphere. ""we're finding that kids' level of stress at school lowers a lot when they are in spaces where they feel relaxed where there's lots of natural light, scent can even play a big role in an environment," the school says the furniture and desks will come in within the next few months. an annual effort to feed the hungry during the holidays has started in johnson county. yesterday the crisis center of johnson county kicked off "project holiday." each year the program collects money to buy meals for it distributed nearly two thousand meals. and this year it hopes to give out even more. " we have about 100 sites in and around johnson county that have displayed project holiday tags, so just grab a tag, take it home and that's a nice reminder to send in a gift, 25 dollars buys a holiday meal for a family and every little bit helps. state is asking the federal government for help. governor branstad has asked the president to declare a disaster declaration. the governor requested funding under fema's public assistance program. that money would go toward repairing damaged roads, bridges 19 counties. it would also cover the cost of emergency work before, during and after the flood. the united way is asking people to log any of the hours they put in to help with flood preparation. volunteers are encouraged to go online, enter their name, email, how they volunteered, the hours they worked, and upload any pictures. united way says so many people came out to help, that they couldn't keep track of everyone. linn county emergency management flood prevention and repair costs. and they hope people will be honest about their hours "there's really no value to anybody personally to call in hours they didn't work. and this is iowa. we trust people to be fair and honest on what they submit " the united way saysit wants to be better prepared to log people's hours in future disasters. a link to where you can enter your hours is on our website, kcrg dot com. rest of his life in prison for killing his wife. a judge sentenced 48- year-old barney fraaken earlier this week. he pleaded guilty to a first- degree murder charge on thursday and was immediately sentenced to life in prison. investigators say he shot and killed his wife amy fraaken last year. he was also charged in the shooting death of his 16-year-old daughter, amber. that charge was dropped in the plea deal. fraaken's the former city clerk of the western iowa town of casey is going to prison for mail fraud and setting city hall on fire. a judge sentenced dorothy dillinger to five years in prison yesterday. she set this fire at city hall in august 2014. it happened the night before auditors were arriving to investigate missing money. she later admitted she had been taking the money and using it for personal expenses. a judge has not said how much restitution prosecutors want her to pay more than two million dollars. the delaware county sheriff's office says two men are on the run this morning after robbing a bank with a gun and a knife. the sheriff's office says the robbery happened around 8:45 this morning at the citizens state bank in hopkinton. none of the bank employees were injured in the robbery. anyone with information should call the sheriff's office. cedar rapids police say someone and even hit one person recently. according to some of the most recent reports-- it sounds like the people behind paintballing are actually adults. and it's been happening for months. kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders reports. earlier this year, francis douglas painted his home on e ave nw. but one morning in august, he woke up to find a fresh coat. "i walked out. happened to look up at the front of the house. we had florescent- orange spots." his polka dotted property had been peppered with paintballs. at least three of h as well. vehicles too, like this suv that was parked outside. "don't they have something better to do? or, someplace else to do it?" apparently not. police say, in just the last two weeks, there have been at least four reports of vandals firing paintballs at property and people. chief wayne jerman called the act a juvenile thing to do. not only is it possible someone will get hurt, but paintballers could be shot themselves. their guns look remarkably like the real thing. "don't these people think that they stand the risk of somebody trying to protect themselves? i just think it's an incredibly a few of the incidents. authorities arrested 26- year-old kenneth herring and 30-year-old earnest murry, earlier this month. police say the two spent the evening of october 6th driving around cedar rapids, shooting paintballs out of a van. one woman was hit in the eye. herring was charged with criminal mischief. murry, driving while barred.
