"principal dr gregg shoultz principal gregg shoultz says the second floor is the hottest inside the school, and kids in these classrooms are getting sick 55:35-55:42"they get a little woozy easier at this time of day and later on in the day. they get just light headed" officials say 7 out of the 26 schools in the district don't have air conditioning in some of their classrooms. naovye schmidt is a 7th grader at southeast junior high, where students are feeling the heat. 32:48 "it's a huge school so it's always hot, and you can't concentrate during the day because it's so hot. it's ridiculous they should just get air like in the library they have it so everybody wants to go to the library" 33:00 naive schmidt 7th grader darlene gibson waits to pickup her grandson outside of twain elementary. that school has fully functioning air conditioning, but she's fine with them being let out early. darlene gibson grandparent 35:26-35:35 "because then you don't have kids who are going to schorl when other kids aren't going to school because they haven't caught up yet. iowa city is a good school district, it will catch up." and shoultz says they will be working hard overnight make sure there is school on to vent the building as much as possible we will open up as many windows as we can and get as many fans going to pull in the cool air and get rid of the hot air" the district has a 10 year 200 million dollar plan that will equip all classrooms with working air conditioning by 2023 live in iowa city reed. kcrg tv9 news cedar rapids schools say the investigations into a teacher- student sex for such cases. mary beth haglin was a substitute teacher at washington high school, and she's admitted having a sexual relationship with a wash student last school year. she faces a criminal charge of sexual exploitation by a school employee. washington principal ralph plagman and activities director mike johnson resigned last month because of the scandal. the district says the initial investigation of allegations against haglin did not meet the standards of training plagman had gone through. that investigation was in february. plagman admitted making a wrong call then by trusting the wrong people. that allowed haglin to continue teaching. the district says administrators did not follow their training again in april. and administrator s did not follow procedures to remove haglin from the building and from the district's substitute teacher list in may. the iowa state patrol says the labor day weekend weekend, the state patrol steps up efforts to try to keep the roads safer. this year, it handled 58 crashes across the state. 31 of those involved serious injuries... altogether, five people died. last week, a motorcycle and a school bus collided in clayton county. nw authorities have cited the driver of the clayton ridge school bus for failure to yield while making a left turn. she's charlotte scherer from guttenberg. the crash happened l road between guttenberg and garnavillo. it killed the motorcycle rider, ronald kephart. he was 50 and from garnavillo. students on the bus when it happened, but none of them were hurt. this is national suicide prevention week. and hawkeye community college in waterloo has chosen a very visual way to raise awareness about suicides. suicide is second leading cause of death in the united states for people ages 15 to 34. and 90 percent of those who take at the time -- like depression. kcrg-tv9's dave franzman joins us in the studio tonight. dave, what is hawkeye community college doing? bruce and beth, the school wanted a way to make students think about those 11- hundred student lives lost every year to suicide. so lining a central courtyard that connects the main campus buildings is a rather dramatic display. it's 11-hundred pairs of empty shoes representing students who didn't get the mental health counseling they needed. and it's not just empty shoes at this community college campus in waterloo. there are literally hundreds of stories about those students who took their own lives. some are on photo posters, many others attached to the shoes themselves. for those students taking the time to look, read and ponder it's a reminder that this can be a stressful time of life and there are people willing and able to all, college is a really stressful time...just dealing with life trying to get homework done trying to have a social life trying, working to grow who you are working to have some money. " for every student represented here, there are many more who tried to take their own lives but stopped short perhaps with some timely intervention from friends who cared or admitting they needed help to deal with stress and depression. tonight at ten, more on this unusual display at a community college to draw attention to depression and other mental health issues impacting students. and we'll tell you if this display is making students think and making them more sensitive to the signs of stress in fellow students. thanks, dave. people living in one part of dubuque may soon be able to check out books and movies without going too far. hear what the dubuque library board is considering of dubuque might be getting some library services closer to home. the dubuque library board says it isn't serving people living in that area properly. so now it's considering what do. kcrg-tv9's katie wiedemann joins us live tonight. katie, what are some of the options the library has talked about? they're talking about several different options, including a possible partnership with the dubuque county library in asbury. dubuque library directors say people living and working on the west end of the city tend to not travel downtown to so, about four years ago, the library placed a book vending machine inside the hy-vee store on the northwest arterial. but that machine often broke and wasn't reliable so they got rid of it. now, the board is consider replacing that machine or possibly starting a book mobile. they say, one other option would be to create a partnership with the dubuque county library and allow people living on the west side of "if it's something we could work out, it could be a win-win as far as tax-payers are concerned. to have the convenience and have the access even though they are two different library systems.
