"it's always nice to see these new buildings, it's just, i don't know it makes me feel great to be an iowa student knowing we have all these cool buildings come to campus." and the projects really don't here. they've already broken ground on a new three tower dorm project going up on madison street. that will open in 2017. in iowa city, mark carlson, kcrg tv nine news. meteorologist joe winters joins us now with your first forecast. joe, can we squeeze out another day like today? we can begin to wave goodbye to the milder weather as arctic air is in sight. there is a slight chance for a mix overnight with some light snow on friday as colder air begins to move south. saturday features falling temperatures with the winds increasing from the north. as an arctic front moves through late saturday light snow is possible. wind chills will drop to dangerous levels between -25 to -35 later on saturday y d sunday so take precautions necessary to stay safe. have a good night! tonight: chance of mix late low: 25-31 winds: sw 5-15tomorrow: chance of snow, windy high: 27-33 back to you. a crash in iowa county killed a mother and her two year old this morning. the sheriff's office says 18-year-old bethany clark of belle plaine lost control of her car on highway 212 about five miles west of marengo. they say the road was frost covered when the accident happened about 7:15 this morning. clark and her two-year-old son, roran, were in the vehicle when it caught on fire. they died at the scene. the icy road conditions caused two crashes involving seven vehicles in cedar rapids. police say the first crash happened near the edgewood road southwest overpass over highway 30 about 5:45 a-m. and while police were responding, they crashed into a jeep. one of the officers had non life-threatening injuries. no one else was hurt. the crashes closed edgewood road in that area for three hours. lisbon police are searching for a man who broke into a local bar and may have burglarized some homes as well. police say the man broke into early in the morning on december 27th. this is surveillance video from that morning. police say he stole money and also damaged a cash register, an a-t-m, a juke box, and game machines. they believe the same man is responsible for some recent home burglaries. if you have any information, call lisbon police. in a t-v nine follow up tonight... a waterloo daycare provider faces a child endangerment charge after a baby died in her care. police arrested amy hangartner yesterday. an unresponsive one year old boy at her home daycare at 1415 bertch avenue. the child later died at a nearby hospital. an investigation shows the boy became unresponsive while strapped in a car seat for his nap. police say hangartner did not have a registered daycare. and remember, whenever you see news happening, call newsline nine at you can also send pictures and videos to newsroom at kcrg dot com. the heat is back on at both the linn county courthouse and jail. now county leaders need to figure out exactly what happened and how much it will cost to fix. damage from the ruptured pipes. the first break happened tuesday at the courthouse. the next morning, a pipe 500 gallons more of the watery antifreeze mixture and shut off heat to both the jail and courthouse. kcrg-tv9's dave franzman joins us from the linn county courthouse. dave, the county's emergency management agency helped keep business going. bruce, a military surplus mobile heating and power unit was wheeled into place at the courthouse wednesday afternoon. it pumped in just enough heat to keep county business going until the system now the question is what happened and who pays. it was business as usual at the linn county courthouse... sort of. offices stayed open and court was in session. behind the scenes some workers depended on coats and gloves and space heaters to stay on the job. "blankets, sometimes heating pads people are sitting on and plenty of space heaters out here." "we haven't rescheduled cases, we haven't bumped things because of the situation" sot/nat the portable heating unit, coupled with a warmer day, meant temperatures in the low 60's inside the courthouse. undoing the damage of two separate pipe breaks that spilled upwards of 500 gallons of a watery antifreeze mixture will take time. one county leader estimated six to eight weeks to repair basement courtrtoms and offices where pipes leaked. sot/nat it's also going to take time to pinpoint just what started the whole sequence of events. "we're working hard to make this a community asset, to not just marion but a ao it will make it easy for people in hiawatha, northeast cedar rapids, as well as springville and surrounding communities to use that facility. " they estimate they'll break ground for marion's new y-m-c-a building in six to eight months. more eastern iowa school districts are seeing a benefit in replacing some diesel schoho buses with propane- fueled ones. not only is propane considered a cleaner burning fuel, but districts say the buses are better in the bitter cold.
