The linn county attorney has cleared two Cedar Rapids Police officers who were involved in a Fatal Shooting in october. Police stopped a truck on ravenwood terrace northwest that was carrying people who they suspected of being involved a meth deal. This is that area. One man in the truck, 21 yearold jonathan gossman, tried to run away. And a Police Chase Led to officers shooting gossman, who police say had pointed a gun at t em. Gossman died at the scene. The county Attorney Says officers lucas jones and Bryson Garringer were justified in shooting. One cedar rapids man was temporarily stranded in a cherry picker on 1st ave and 3rd street southwest this morning. Cedar rapids police, fire, and ambulance responded to the scene at 9 50 this morning. They were able to get the man out within 15 snapped causing the picker to get stuck. The broken cherry picker was at 1st avenue for a few hours but police say it is now out of the way. More and more iowa students are taking advantage of a program that helps them apply to colleges. Over 35hundred seniors at 78 high schools participated in iowa college aids College Application Campaign Last year. Its a program to increase the number of first generation students and students from low income families who g gto college. The number of students involved in this jumped 36 percent last year, the largest increase for the program so far. A survey shows about 23 percent of students say they would n n have applied to colleges if it werent for this campaign. Linn county supervisors took a first step today to see if theres support for a higher minimum wage. Last fall, johnson c cnty supervisors ssed a threestep increase in the minimum wage in that county. There was controversy and some smaller communities rescind the increase. Today linn county supervisors listened to some facts and figures on the impact of a minimum wage hike. But the decision here was to go slow and gauge the interest while avoiding some of the controversy seen in johnson county. Thats what i want to avoid i want it to be something that builds and a consensus decision. Supervisors expect to form a group of business owners, workers and community representativ es to look at the issues of a higher county minimum wage. One recent report found more than 18thousand linn county workers would directly benefit from a higher minimum wage. Iowa Supreme Court chief Justice Mark Cady has added his voice to governor branstads call to end Racial Disparities in the criminal justice system. Today, cady gave his annual state of the judiciary report to the legislature. He said three percent of iowas population is african american, but they represent 20 percent of iowas prison populatioio cady also talked program where linn, johnson, and scott counties collaborate with georgetown university. A pipe ruptured in the linn country courthouse last night, spilling gallons of water and antifreeze on the first floor. Afteteanother pipe failed in the jailhouse and Sheriffs Office this morning, workers are scrambling to get the heat back on. Were going to collaboratively meet here and look at the issues and try to figure out have t t have a solution in place probably within 24 hours to get heat back in to the facility. The chemical that spilled is not dangerous to courthouse. Heat back on by midnight, as temperatures were already dropping inside today. A sewer back up into a North Liberty homeownenes basement cost him thousands of the homes water detectors went off early allowing the family to stop the flooding before it got even worse. The city immediatly came to the house to investigate, and found multiple non flushable items in the sewer main that causedhe backup. We believe they were the adult version of the wet wipes that are being marketed as flushable and disposable when they really are not. Doing a little more research, and talking with the citys staff, and admininiration, its something thats happened in the past. Nonprofits and volunteer and government funding to keep them running. The National Center for charitable statistics says in 2013, 21 percent of nonprofits revenues came from contributions, gifts, and government grants. But what do nonprofits use e at money for . Just yesesrday, five volunteer organizations in eastern iowa learned theyre getting grant money. The iowa volunteer Generation Fund is distributing 99thousand efforts. The money went to united way organizations that serve 10 counties and to the volunteer center of cedar valley in black hawk county. Kcrg tv nines Dubuque Bureau chief Katie Wiedemann talked to the united way in dubuque, one of the organizations using this money for volunteers. Katie, volunteers, of course, get no pay. Does this mean theres a cost for volunteers . Its all those Little Things you may not think about. The united way says just because nonprofits dont pay volunteers for their work, doesnt mean volunteers are free. Come on guys. The boys and girls club is one of more than a dozen charities the united way of most people dont understand though, how much work we do to engage out community in active volunteerism because we know the more engaged people are with their resource of time, the more likely they are to invest dollars. Executive director joey taylor says recruiting and engaging those volunteers costs money. Hosting volunteer fairs to recruit them and training them once they sign up. Different supplies. I think we take for granted just the supplies or the mailings. Theres a cost associated with those things. Taylor says some charities need money to keep those volunteers around. Some non profits pay for volunteers meals and transportatio n. Or they reward their efforts with small gifts. Boy it doesnt hurt to give them a pat on the back for some of the great things they do fofo the community. As for summer, no pat on the back is needed, he says seeing these kids improve is all showing kids that fitness and health is not something you have to do january 1st through february 1st. You can enjoy it and share it with your friends and with your colleagues. The united way says the very first thing they will do with the grant money is hire a part Time Employee to help connect eager volunteers with the charities who really need their help. Its definitely a blessing. Not very many kids get the opportunity to play with one, let alone two. So, i try to realize that is something thats special. It means first of all that ive had a loving wife sharon, whos been able to be very patient and understanding. She knows my passion, weve been married for 51 years. We dont go into coaching to see how many wins we can get. It just means youve had longevity and great kids. Bob hilmer is the alltime winningest coach in iowa history. And in the last couple of years, he had discussed with his son mike about coaching together. But it almost didnt happen. They had their house for sale a couple of different times in winfield and never got it sold. So, they actually had decided to retire in winfield. And just one day y ady asked if their house was still for sale. The next week it was sold without a realtor and they were moved in to cedar rapids, and thats when it became a reality. My dad said hed be willing to volunteer coach, but i said that if he was coming, were going to cocoach. North linn is currently 111 on the year, but despite being father and son, theyve had to learn to work together. Even some of the fundamentals are little bit different. And i have to stop and think how we are doing this. A lot of times im almost stuttering to myself because i cant think. Then i realize were doing it this way. The funny thing i see is hes always reminding me that these kids are young and remember him telling me im young and make mistakes. My grandpa has taught us a lot. He knows all the fundamentals, hes been around for a long time. Dad, hell get the newer version on stuff sometimes. That gives us a little bit of both. After sharing those special moments together on friday and tuesday, they hope theres more memories to come. Hes second to none and im very fortunate to have him in my life as a co coach, but im pretty fortunate to have him as a father. Ive coached for so long, im not sure what would happen if i wasnt coaching. Even games we lose, i cant wait to get to the practice gym the next day.
