after a cool stretch to close out october, meterologist chris havely is in with the first alert forecast.. the drizzle and clouds are moving out for tonight. skies should turn mostly clear for most of eastern iowa by the latter evening hours. temperatures will fall to around 40 for overnight lows. the second half of the weekend is shaping up to be much nicer with warmer air moving in, and plenty of sunshine to go along with it. expect highs in the low to mid 60s. we only go up from there as the workweek begins. expect highs around 70 through wednesday, before rain chances return for late thursday and thursday night. 70s in early november. can't beat it! tonight: skies clearing low: 36-42 winds: w 5-15 alo: 39 dbq: 39 iow: 40tomorrow: mostly sunny high: 62-68 winds: s 5-10 alo: 65 dbq: 63 iow: 66 back to you. quick work by firefighters kept a fire at a university of iowa dorm from turning much worse and endangering the lives of hundreds. the iowa city fire department responded to the slater residence hall on campus at just before 1:30 this morning, and, once on scene, they attacked the fire on the ninth floor of the dormitory. kcrg-tv 9's sarah mccarthy joins us live from outside of slater hall -- sarah, you talked with people who had to get out...quick. absolutely, chris. i spoke with several students who say at first they thought the alarms were just a drill. but ras on each floor banged on doors - getting students out of bed and out of the building. sprinkler systems went off in part of the building. that contained the fire to one room on the ninth floor. officials directed students to two other dorms right across the street. and students say a few hours later, most could return to their rooms. although a few residents are still in temporary housing now. but according to one university of iowa official, everything went according to emergency plans. "i would want parents to know that students are safe, everyone was evacuated as they should be and very quickly let back into their rooms." there is significant water damage in parts of the building. tonight at ten, we'll take you inside to see the mess some students are still cleaning up today. live in iowa city, sarah mccarthy, kcrg-tv9 news. a deadly crash on friday in southern iowa, where investigators say a semi driver hit a horse and buggy in davis county.. the iowa state patrol said the driver of a semi was on a road, four miles west of bloomfield, when he hit the horse and buggy. troopers say the semi was trying to pass the buggy in the left lane of the roadway and that the horse tried to turn left as the semi passed it. investigators say 77-yard old norman yutzy was in the buggy and died at the scene. habitat for humanity restores have served people -- with stores in cedar rapids, iowa city, des moines and the quad cities... this morning marked a grand opening... in waterloo. the new restore in waterloo opened this morning on flammang drive. this is the first store to be built in the black hawk, bremer, and butler county area. the organization collects donated furniture and building supplies to sell to the public. employees torage units full of donations collected over the past few months to prepare for today's shoppers. those proceeds then go toward building houses for habitat for humanity. "through the store we're hoping to be able to build more houses every year, do more repair projects, and just do more for families in our community and everyone's been really excited about that." a note on the hours for the waterloo restore... the iowa heartland habitat for humanity restore is open wednesdays through saturdays -- 9 am to 6 pm.. also in black hawk county, high school students spent the day helping to gather food donations. students from hudson high school set up a table to collect donations outside of fareway today in waterloo. the food drive will support more than 50,000 people the northeast iowa food bank in waterloo considers "food insecure". hudson high school is competing with other area high schools to collect the most donations. the school with the most pounds of food will be recognized. but for the students, the drive means more than the competition. "i think if they just donate even a sixty cent can it makes them feel better it makes us feel better everyone wins, because we gotta start one step at a time to solve hunger." the last opportunities to donate are november 3rd and 5th at cedar falls high school parent teacher conferences and november 4th at the cedar falls pizza ranch. even before the holiday season, more than 100 cedar rapids children received a "faster way to get around"... variety the childrens charity - worked with two local nonprofits - to give them a way to foster independence and responsibility. tv9's brady smith parents."this time, variety's bikes for kids program benefited the hd youth center and waypoint services. robyn rieckhoff says the youth center in particular is now serving more young people than december 15th in las vegas before the candidates return to des moines for a january 2016 debate -- the exact date has yet to be released... with all the concern over isis and global terrorism.. now hundreds are dead after a russian plane crashes, with isis claiming responsibility. isis claims it brought down a isis claims it brought down a russian jet over egypt, killing everyone on board. 224 passengers and crew were on the metrojet plane when it crashed in the sinai peninsula this morning. it's not clear what brought down the jet. but egyptian officials say the pilot reported technical difficulties and requested an emergency landing. this morning, u-s secretary of state john kerry sent his condolences to the russian people. storms rolled through texas. crews recovered a body today and presumed 2 deaths in the houston area were weather- related. meanwhile, cleanup is underway as people clear downed trees from their yards. strong winds and even tornadoes leveled buildings in the
