The Des Moines Police for eleven years. Police say greene fired 15 to 30 shots into the squad cars with a 22caliber gun. Kcrg tv nines Dave Franzman joins us live tonight from the Des Moines Police department. Dave, theres already a pretty big memorial for the officers set up there. Beth, there is a squad car draped in black with bouquets of flowes similar memorials sprang up in urbandale and south of the Merle Hay Mall where the two officers died in their squad cars. While Police Caught the alleged shooter shortly after 9 00 oclock this morning the investigation is far from over. Warrant here at a home owned by the suspects mother. One neighbor says this is where the suspect and his family lived as well. At the morning news conference, officers called it a terrible day with no easy explanations. What we can tell looking at the scene is it appears neither officer had an opportunity to interact with the suspects it doesnt look like there was an exchange of conversation there definitely wasnt an opportunity for officers to defend themselves from the attack the Urbandale Police chief says his runins. One incident occurred in october when greene, displaying a confederate flag, was asked to leave an urbandale football came for causing a disturbance. Did that runin with police at the football field prompt a deadly outburst a few weeks later . Well have some thoughts from officers and neighbors about that at six. Five Police Officers have now died in the line of duty in iowa this year. Thats Des Moines Police officers carlos puentemorales and Susan Farrell died in a crash with a drunk driver on interstate 80 this past march. They were transporting a prisoner at the time. And West Des Moines Sergeant Shawn miller died when a car hit his motorcycle as he was driving back from testifying in court in august. For several months, cedar rapids area pastors and police have been discussing how to prevent violence against police, like the shootings this morning. Prayer Services Later this month. The events will be open to the public. People attending will pray for Police Accountability and officer safety. The events will take place outside the Police Departments in cedar rapids, marion, and hiawatha, as well as outside the linn county sheriffs department. Some kirkwood students got experience treating all of those today during an emergency drill. And its experience that these future healthcare workers will use on real patients in the future. That story is next, here on preparedness drill that started with a simulated house fire. Nursing, emt, paramedic, and respiratory therapy students were all involved. The college designed each room in the campus Simulation Center to mimic a hospital room. Teams worked on test dummies to treat burns, respiratory issues, and even a pediatric patient. This was the first opportunity students had to practice what was similar to a real life situation. One goal work together. A lot of this was handoff communication to see how the different professions will interact with each other. Instead of just operating at their specific professional level, theyre able to do a handoff and also work as a team. In past years, kirkwood has simulated a car accident for students. It plans on doing Something Like this again next year. A meeting is happening now about changing an intersection in Benton County where five young people died in a crash. Just outside of urbana. Last april, five people between the ages of 12 and 20 died in a crash. People are discussing whether to make it a t intersection, or leave it as it is. Tonights meeting goes until 6 30.
