Craig tierney hopes to finish a business and marketing degree at the university of iowa in a couple of years and believes hell have good job prospects then. Right now, he depends on a minimum wage job, plus tips, as a bartender. And even when he moves on to better work, he knows ny wholl still depend on jobs paying near minimum wage. I have a lot of friends working in the tipped wage and minimum wage industry. A lot of them are single mom w just for themselves but for kids to provide for them. As a member of the living wage linn county group, tierney and others watched anxiously as supervisors took up the minimum wage question. Some supervisors still believe setting a minimum wage is a function of state government. But the feeling was since the state wont that hasnt been increased for almost a decade and not expect a local Government Entity not to take this up. Supervisors did make one significant change. The linn county ordinance no longer calls for automatic wage hikes based on inflation beginning in the year 2020. Supervisor harris says the small town Business Owners calling him can probably live with the first 1an hour increase. Its the minimum wage hikes beyond that that concern them. If you apply inflation to the 7. 25, it becomes right around 8. 25. Thats a fair increase. The unknown is out beyond 2017. September 6th and september 12th to make the minimum wage hike official. But the first vote is typically the most critical. Now supervisors will wait to see if City Councils will go along with the wage hike or pass their own rules to opt out.
