o'donnell says the reports of infected pregnant women in brazil having babies who have small heads, is worrying exexctant moms here at home. "patients are definitely calling. it's all over the news. it's all over the newspaper and magazines. so a lot of our patients are calling with concerns. " doctor o'donnell recommends her patients follow the current cdc guidelines. "women who are pregnant or who are thinking of becoming pregnant, should not travel to those infected countries. " and while doctors say the current risk here in iowa is extremely low, both medical providers say pregnant women need to be mindful of the risks. "i think the cdc is right in heightening the awareness. if you're a pregnant mom, you want to know your risk. if you're going to these areas that are zika infested. " as for murphy, she'll stay close to home and worry about other things. "that they baby continues to have a strong heartbeat, that i am measuring ok. " right now there are no reported cases of zika virus here in iowa. but the medical providers tell us the zika virus is not a mandatory reportable illness, like the mumps or influenza. so that's not something doctors have to report to the state, and it's not considered public information. live in dubuque katie wiedemann kcrg tv-9 news. let's turn now to meteorologist joe winters. joe, it's been quiet but the kind of cold we've come to expect mid-february. will this continue for the rest of the week? our off again - on a ain snow pattern continues right through the upcoming weekend. the next clipper arrives early on friday with a light snow chance pushing across the state. the sky increases with clouds later on thursday, after a partly cloudy start, as highs push back into the lower 20s. friday's snow looks to be light, but a bit farther east than what the state saw wednesday. while saturday looks fine for travel state wide, valentine's day on sunday looks to have some snow falling. have a great night! tonight: chance flurries low: 2-8 cloudy high: 18-24 winds: nw 5-10 bruce and beth... the tama county sheriff's office is looking for three men involved witta number of home improvement scams. an arrest warrant for elvis allison says he's working with tyson allison and bobby allison. they've offered bogus roofing jobs, lightning rods, and driveway coatings in tama county. the sheriff's office says all three are from indiana, and they're using fake names and fake i-ds. the sheriff's office says the three men n ve scammed people all across the midwest. elvis allison is also wanted in palo alto county, along transportation planners have recommend defunding a stretch of a road thth would connect marion, robins, hiawatha and northern cedar rapids. linn county was hoping to build three-quarters of a mile of tower terrace road from robins road to council street. but the eimated cost for that project jumped to almost 19- million dollars, three times the original estimate by the corridor metropolitan planning organization in 2008. so, that group is recommending taking 760- thousand dololrs from that project and putting it into a different stretch of tower terrace road. the other stretch would connect tower terrace from c avenue northeast in cedar rapids to alburnett road in marioio a group of students from the cedar rapids school district are in des moines today lobbying lawmakers for more money for schools. state lawmakers are trying to figure out how much funding school districts will get next school year. the republican- controlled house proposed a two percent increase in state aid to hools. the democrat- controlled senate says that's not enough and wants a increase. cedar rapids schools superintendent brad buck says the district needs at least a three point 72 percent increase to maintain current staffing and programs. kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders joins us now live from the statehouse in des moines. forrest, these students are very concerned about what could happen if the district doesn't get that three point 72 percent. i talklk with a metro student today who echoed exactly that. a message she and her peers brought to legislators today. the group of around 75 prepared over the last few days. this morning, they hopped on a bus and arrived in des moines at about 10:30. almost immediately the lobbying began. students had been told to look up their legislators ahead of time, then find them in the capitol and encourage support for at least that 3.72 percent funding increase to maintain staff and services. metro sophomore had to say. "i feel like we got a lot of answers told to us. hopefully that will h he some effect on the outcome. " seven montnt after johnson county startedd issuing community i-d cards, it hasn't reached its goal. the county hopes more people sign up, including those who are not u-s citizens. and a former mayor in eastern iowa now serves the public by volunteering to help people through some of their most challenging days. his story's still ahead here on kcrg t-v nine. the university of iowa's is working with johnson,county to hel people sign up for county ididtification cards. last july, the johnson county supervisors unanimously approved a program that let people with or without u-s citizenship get i-ds through the county. about seven months after the county started issuing the i-ds, 765 people have signed up. in the program's first month, the county issued 540 i-d cards. but then the interest slowed down considerably. the johnson county auditor's office says it wants to issue at least a thousand i-ds. today, the university of iowa's graduate student union, known as a johnson county elections technician says the program is for people who otherwise might not be able to get a government i-d, like a driver's license. " we have a lot of people from mexico, el salvador, honduras, um we have someone just now from lhonithuania, so it's starting to kinda get a huge outreach from tpe community. it's interestingngo see t t people who actually live in johnson county then and see where they actually came from before you know residing here and growing roots.
