"iowa beef checkoff proceeds and investments can be utilized more flexibly. so, whereas, the national checkoff cannot be used for production research, producer production side. state dollars could be used that way and we can enhance some of those efforts from a promotion and marketing standpoint as well." the national checkoff is a dollar a head.. 50 cents goes to the beef board.. and the other 50 stays in the state.. often times being used to promote beef where population centers are around the country. the iowa checkoff would be another 50 cents a head.. and starts here for investment decisions. deppe says they're maintaining a refund provision in the checkoff.. so if a producer doesn't want to pay in, they can get it back... "if someone would be one that maybe didn't support it with a vote, perspectively, but the referendum passed and we moved forward on it, that refund provision is there. and we would hope producers, if they did get refunds, they would still connect to that return on investment, all about." deppe hopes the referendum will happen in late summer of this year.. ---- grains are up a couple pennies.. cattle are still headed up.. and hogs are regaining ground they lost. i spoke to analyst jamey kohake yesterday before the market close.. he says the rallies are a follow through from tuesday.. though. we need some fresh export business to really really a larger move right now. it's pretty week so hopefully we ship some business down to argentina as they get into a full blown harvest schedule. but energies are back lower today. stocks are sharply higher. so, all that broader based green on the board has helped out too." "we got a little more follow through here today. we are sharply higher. yesterday morning we could not get through friday's lows and run any major stops out. we had a big correction late in the section yesterday and continue that up here today the key will be to push cash higher this week or not 133 last week." "they look to be getting pretty rangebound and looks to be getting a little sluggish. fundamentals look supportive right now but the market does look a little tired. and i think another sharp rally. hedgers got to be ready to put a floor underneath this ---- u-s pork exports did not look good in 2015 according to the u-s meat export federation.. value dropped 16 percent from 2014.. about half a billion dollars.. 2015 exports were worth about five and a half billion.. and volume levels.. fell about two percent.. ---- we'll post a video every day in the agribusiness section of kcrg.com. you'll find it under the news tab. i'm david geiger with the agribusiness report. trt 3.25 oc webtease iowa farmers and businesses will get more help improving their environmental performance -- specifically, clean water. the u-s ag department recently awarded 9- point-5 million dollars to the midwest agriculture water quality partnership. farmers and landowners also plan to invest 33 and conservation efforts to keep water clean. is also dedicating an additional four point 75 million dollars to help farmers implement technology that reduces nitrogen and phosphorous run-off. the iowa department of initiative will focus on the middle cedar and upper cedar watersheds. taking advantage of our warmer weather may mean enjoying local events. from comedy to music and a 'housewives' parody - how can we avoid it? what can you do if you become a victim of tax return fraud? identity thieves steal personal information and use it to file a false tax return . it is estimated that tax return fraud will total nearly $21 billion in 2016!how does it happen? to file a tax return, all that is needed is a name, social security number, and date this information can be obtained by hackers through sophisticated means, like the massive corporate data breaches that occur far too often, or through isolated cases of identity theft. if the fraudulent return is filed early enough , the hackers will have received the return before either the individual filer or irs is able to detect there is a problem. how to avoid it file returns asap. the scam relies on the time spread between when the irs begins accepting returns and when key tax documents are issued. do not use free public wi-fi for transacting personal financial business, especially the filing of tax returns. use normal identity theft protection protocol. shred financial data, check your credit record and financial accounts often, change passwords, etc. what to do if you are subject to tax return fraud tax return fraud is likely to go undiscovered from irs that there is an issue with their return. most likely, this occurs because the individual files their legitimate return and receives notice that a return has already been filed. this notice will be issued via traditional mail. the irs does not give this notice via e-mail. if this occurs, prompt action is required. first, file an identity theft affidavit and return it with a copy of the notice to the address provided on the notice. next, get ready for a prolonged process of "paperwork trading" with the irs. it can be quite an inconvenience. tory, thanks for being here. teach us how to build a strong foundation with our core. stay with your 24 hour back to our top stories this midday. a bill expected to pass the senate judiciary committee would address racial profiling in law enforcement. the bill would standardize the collection of law enforcement racial data and provide further training for police officers. the senate judiciary committee approved the so-called 'ban the box' bill last night. the measure would remove the box on employment applications that asks if someone has a past criminal conviction or arrest. the des moines register reports 19 other states have already passed a law banning the box. hy vee is donating 11 semis full of bottled water in honor of iowa state basketball player monte morris who grew up in that area. flint has been dealing with a lead contaminated water since then city changed its water source in 20-14. we have boys high school hoops for you tonight on kcrg nine point two. the mustangs from dubuque hempstead will take on the trojans of iowa city west. tipoff is at 7:30. you can catch the full game on kcrg nine point two. now, one last look at this morning's weather, justin. the much-advertised warm-up is upon us. despite areas of clouds, we'll still warm into the 40s this afternoon with a breezy southeast wind of 15 to 30 mph. some sun will filter through the clouds from time to time. temperatures slowly warm overnight with passing clouds and a slim chance of a sprinkle near the minnesota border. mild and windy weather continues tomorrow with a mostly sunny sky and highs well into the 50s. some lower 60s are possible in the south. winds may gust over 30 mph. saturday's still going to be warm with sunshine and highs in the 50s. highs should be in the upper 40s on sunday, with somewhat cooler highs close to 40 for a good share of next week. the overall pattern looks dry over the coming days.today: milder, turning p/cloudy high: 42-48 winds: se 15-30 alo: 44 dbq: 42 iow: 46 tonight: rising low: 42-48 winds: s 15-25 alo: hold onto your sombreros, because we're about to have a "chew" fan favorite fiesta up in here. michael's whipping up a satisfying sandwich that'll make you say chorizo-m-g. then, mario's in the kitchen with the hilarious craig ferguson and they've got a mexican classic that will really give you something to taco bout. plus, i'm cooking up a glitzy burrito with a guy who has got all the right moves on the dance floor and in the kitchen -- the amazing derek huff. it's about to get deliciously loco right now on "the chew."
