And roads and bridges are also starting to open. The cedar river. The city says downtown bridges should be open to traffic saturday. So should all i380 ramps leading into the downtown area. Bus service will also resume saturday. And as people return to their homes and businesses, cleanup efforts are getting underway. That means removing tens of thousand of sandbags in the coming days. The city has two locations for homeowners to drop off wet and dry sandbags. The noelridge pool site opens at site opens at seven am saturday. Anyone who cant drop off the sandbags should leave them at their curb. The city will start picking them up on monday, october 10th. Businesses and non profits have four dropoff locations for sandbags. One is on the east side of downtown between the quaker oats and cargill plants. Another is next to the former chrome horse building in newbo. And third is the parking lot behind the shops on 16th avenue southwest in czech village. The business, tornados pub and grub, hopes to reopen soon in the cedar rapids newbo district, even though it was on the wet side of the citys temporary flood wall. The city set up hesco barriers on 16th avenue southeast, leaving most of newbo dry to the west, while tornados and a few other buildings flooded to the east. Owner tom slaughter and his family stayed inside tornados during the flood. Sandbags protected the building, water. Slaughter says he wound up with only about a foot of water in the basement. He thinks he can clean that up on his own without filing a Flood Insurance claim. We may lost the water heater. Besides that we didnt suffer any damage we stayed every night since last friday, we have not left. Slaughter is still unhappy about the citys decision to leave his business and others on the wet the city says it had to put the hesco barriers on solid pavement, and the street was the only option. The people at the temple are helping First Responders like police officers, state troopers, firefighters and paramedics during the flooding in cedar rapids. We what we could do and First Responders are on mandatory 12hour shifts and could probably use a place for a break. John english is a mason with the Crescent Lodge in cedar rapids. Given the building is near the flood evacuation zone, english thought the fraternal orders temple would be the perfect spot to provide those protecting and serving a warm place to relax and grab a bite. 12 14 28;04 theyre here 24 hours a day, so were here 24 hours. Officers and firefighters say that effort has meant a lot.
