Well be right back. Cedar rapids, two lawmakers are calling on the us army of permanent flood protection in the city. Congressmen rod blum and Dave Loebsack want to add an amendment to the Water Resources Development Act. Kcrgtv9s samanthajo roth has details from our washington bureau. As cedar rapids is experiencing major flooding, both congressman blum and loebsack are on capitol hill, working together, calling for the corps to prioritize its review of the the flood mitigation project. In the past year, both corps, the House Appropriations committee and the Obama Administration asking for the cedar rapids flood protection funds to be released. The language in the amendment closely resembles a provision introduced by senators grassley and ernst in the Water Resources Development Act in the senate. Which passed earlier this month. The cedar rapids project was approved by congress in 2014 but the Obama Administration has not yet included the project in its budget. The house and the senate have stepped up. Its the said that this project does not meet their guidelines. Its very tough for a small, urban area like cedar rapids to compete with the larger cities in the united states. So we are asking them to prioritize this project and go outside of their guidelines because this is the second flood in eight years in cedar rapids. Sj out we reached out to the army corps of engineers asking why they have neglected to complete this project. They responded in a statement saying, these limited federal resources di such that available funds are focused on the highest performing projects first. The cedar rapids, iowa, flood Risk Management project has not received funds to initiate construction on that prioritized basis. Of course, well continue to keep you updated with the latest on this initiative. For now in washington, sjr. Scott will have sports next philosophy and it will be tested again this saturday against northwestern. The iowa hawkeyes leading receiver, matt indefinitely. He injured his foot in practice yesterday running a pass pattern away from the ball and hurt his foot cutting on a noncontact play. Vandeberg a senior leads the hawkeyes with 19 catches for 284 yards and three touchdowns this season. Hes going to be out for a significant period of time here and we will just have to deal with that and certainly disappointed for him he has worked extremely hard played really well anytime their is an injury it affects that our minds but as we all know its part of football so it provides opportunities for other players and they are going to have to step up and get the job done for us im sure they will the hawkeyes have another senior receiver in Riley Mccarron who had a td catch against north dakota state. Sophomore Jerminic Smith has shown the ability to make some big plays and the injury to vandeberg leaves the door for other young recievers like former Union Star Jay Scheel who is now healthy. Ironically jay scheel was doing really well then he got injured fortunately now hes coming back. I got confidence in all those guys we have a couple old guys that have done a great job and the young guys that have been coming along and learn the offense well and thats part of the game injuries are part of sports and it gives an opportunity for for another guy to step up and play a bigger role for the team the hawkeyes had three big injuries last year in the northwestern game including jordan canzeri who went down early and they overcame those injuries with next man in who happended to is rush for a record tieing four touchdowns against the wildcats. I think thats an excellent example of focusing on doing our job and doing things you know we had a lot of injuries a lot of the stuff was out of place that is a mind set you should bring to every game it doesnt matter the circumstance s it doesnt matter whats going on whos in where a team we are going to get it done together we didnt get a chance to do it at 6 00 because of the Flood Coverage but we have three new finalist for the athlete of the week athlete number one is Carter Downer of east buchanan who rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns in the upset win over lisbon. Athlete number two is rodney schwartshoff who broke the south winn School Record with 382 yards against bcluw and athlete number three is mount vernon running back Jack Cochrane who had 206 yards rushing and five tds and broke the School Career scoring record.
