"we have to look at what the public tells us. we'll be surveying folks. we'll probably have some other opportunities for people to explain." the superintenden t say the district won't be allowed to try the bond vote again for six months. dollars to provide opportunities to students in the cedar rapids area. that program gives students a capstone like experience by working on a real world project while still in high school. iowa big recently applied for grant money through the x-q the super school project, which encourages people to rethink the high school experience. it didn't win the grand prize. but organizers liked the years. the show won't go on... at least for now at theatre cedar rapids. t-c-r is postponing its production of "tribes" because of a casting controversy. t-c-r says it's putting off the play until it can get the support of the deaf community. some have criticized t-c-r for casting an actor who can hear to play a deaf character. but the theatre's artistic director says no deaf ac t-c-r says it now wants to collaborate with the deaf community to find deaf actors to play those roles. there are also questions about an upcoming play in des moines. some people have asked why there are no latino actors in the des moines playhouse production of west side story next month. the play centers around two rival street gangs, the jets, who are white, and the sharks, who are puerto rican. one latino actor had originally earned a role in that production. but he left in protest over characters. "because being latino is a specific experience in the country, it can only be portrayed by those who have a stake in those experiences " the playhouse says it reached out to the latino community when it held auditions. but it apologizes for not doing more. a non-profit in cedar rapids that helps provide food to pets may be on its last leg. animeals is like meals on w owners who have a low income or just are in need of help. right now, the owners of an old horse barn off mount vernon road are letting the non-profit use the place free of charge. but the owners are planning to tear the old barn down because of the cost of repair. that means animeals has to find a new place, on a tight budget.
