They have shattered the turnout caucuses. We dont have the official numbers just yet, but what Party Leaders tell us is in 2012 republicans had roughly 122,000 registered voters turn out, thats about 20 . They beat that earlier tonight with just9 of precincts reporting, gop leaders say they owe it to a variety of field. We owe that to the diversity of our field. Weve got a great field of candidates that have done great work trying to moat motivate our voters. Reporter guys, wehave jeff kaufman taking the stage riit now. Im going to get out of the way and let him speak and go back to you guys at the desk. Thank you, forrest. Brady smith has been following the numbers all night along across the state, county by big screens you sawbehind forrest are what you see. Its really close. It updated about 15 seconds ago. Healthhealthif you want to ok over at the gop still 90 , , so 10 eft to go here for those precincts across the state. Texas senator ted cruz in the lead there. Drump who we just heard speak a little bit ago in second place, and marco rubio whos been nipping at trumps heels in third place and everything falls off sharply from there. Beth . Thank you so much, brady. Y. We have our esteemed panel to we have carrie cosington, we have hanss, tyler olson, and laura with the lynn county republicans. First of all, when you look at second and third place on thee gop side, how much does it matter if trump is second or trump is third . And vice versa for marco rubio or at this point its not relevant . Honestly. I would say for trump i dont know. Even from the beginning his campaign has been im sure the professors could talk to as well. We just didnt know, yeah, he had big turnout for his rallies. Were they actually going to show up for caucus. I think rubios third or second finii as strong as it is that would be very good for him. With ted cruz winning iowa for the gop is this a sign that the evangelical right is strong and a force toto be wreckenned with . I think thats always been a strong part of the republican base. Six weeks is watch the dynamic on the republican sididseem to be focused on ethanol and the Renewable Energy side. A few weeks ago about a his thoughts about ted cruz, ted cruz h h been pushed to change his positions, perhaps more than he was. Marco rubio is one of those candidates that was strongly prorenewable fuel, so i think he might be the beneficiary of other elected leaders to really make sure that a candidate that is strong onhose issues t tt are so important to iowans is close to the top. Hans, every time we look at the results on the democratic side, whoa, its so tight and doesnt seem to be widening at all. This is why we got into this profession, right . I love politics. Its always fun to see how these things are playing out. Us its a game. We see this as a competition, and part of it is trying to understand how do these different organizations Work Together . I think that the point the partys not a unified group. Parties are not a single entity. Its a collection of factions and groups within that party that are really trying to Work Together to nominate someone they think can be a consensus. I think the evan Junior College college evangelicals is wig parar of the party. Thats what you see here. For a while they were supporting ben carson, and he smed to have slipped up a little bit and they moved onto ted cruz. Any surprises for you, carrie . Well, clearly rubio having such a strong showing. I dont think with the numbers left hell be able to overtake trump, but atrong third place, 16 , 17 . Good, but he clearly overperformed as d cruz, ask that tells us that trump is the loser out of this whole process. Given where the polls stood going into the caucuses he dramatically underperformed while cruz and rubio amatically overperfrfmed and trumps going to have some explaining to do. Thank you very much, panelists, bruce . Speaking of ted cruzt he was one of the featured speakers tonight at the huge Republican Caucus gathering at the Double Tree Hotel in downtown cedar rapids. 30 caucuses there, 30 precincts gathering in one location. They heard from rand paul and some people very big in the republican pay. Kcrgtv, sara joins us live. This was a huge party at lynn county. People i this room earlier was really amazing, housing 19 precincts and thousands of people showed up to fill out their secret ballot. Im here with eric rosenthal. Can you talk about something so this precincts in one venue. 1681 precincts and in a larger city its a larger number of people. But there was about approximately 800 sites across the state. This was probably one of the largest sites, and people were very accommodating. We were iowans through andh through, and we had a lot of visitors like four y yrs ago when i was chairing the lynn caucuses. We heard from the candidates. We heard from people representing the candidates. It was a neat experience, but it was very crowded, and there were cetera, but we got through it. Were all iowans, and we have different ways of doing the same way, which is caucuses, but it is the same thick. We caucus every two yeaa but four year years on the president ial, and weve been doing it practically since our state was founded. Awesome. Thank you so much, eric. I appreate your time. Bruce and beth llend it back to you. And now lets check in with the democrats in iowa city. Many of them have gone home, although we understand a few hhg around to play basketball. Tv 9s mark carlson joins us there with whats happening there. Reporter thats the big qution tonight in iowa city. Would the students turn out . And the answer was, yes, more than double what they expected came out here to the fieldhouse to caucus in this democratic caucus. Now, it was pretty much a stadiumlike atmosphere in here. 406 people voted for Bernie Sanders. 92 for Hillary Clinton. N. Seven peoplelecame out to support Martin Omalley and appeared most of them ended up going to sanderss size. The caucus was about an hour behind schedule because of the huge turnout. Many of the voters were inspired to support bernie in the days leading up to this. On saturday thousands turned out for a rally here in the fieldhouse. And many came back tonightht think that is that hillary reached 15 , but so then she wouldnt be viable, but really i dont know, it seems like bernie [ indistinguishable ] theres hundreds of them. Reporter now, everything has rapped up this evening. Again, people bck here playing basketball. Thats kind of been the theme of the nightburg the delay. We saw a lot of basketball being played. Really just a good Old Fashioned basketball, voting and nonopeace and quiet. Mark carlson, kcrg9 news. We have a big story thats going on. Thats the weather. Joe winters joins ususow. And thats especially true when they take place in satellite locations live in iowa city. With democrats at the Retirement Community for their caucus event tonight. Dave . Reporter beth and bruce, it certainly helps to run the situation on time when youve got a preregister for the satellite caucus several weeks in advance. That way organizers knew how many to expect, and the event started exactly on time at 7 00 tonight. The Iowa Democratic Party Started at four locations statewide, 110 was b b far the largest. Participants here preferred Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders 99 votes to 20. Martin omalley registered zero. One participant says it helped older voters who had seen it all before. I think the people that me had been to other caucuses in their other lives before they moved. They probably knew what to expect. The idea behind the satellite caucus site would encourage those with limited mobility to participate in a location not just close to home but literally at their retirement home, and based on whatat we heardfter the event it seemed like the satellite idea very much a hit. Live in iowa city, dave, kcrg tv 9 news. Many iowans are taking part in the caucuses for the first time. Thatncludes a group at Roosevelt Middle School in dubuque. Some republican reaction tonight. Hillary clinton speaking in des mooes tonight, and its looking like she is the winner of the democratic caucuses here in iowa. Of course, three or eight years ago she finished third in the caucusese so this i i a huge lets go live to kcrg tv 9s forrest saunders. Forrest . T . Reporter yes, this is what they call the super site downtn des moines, and some big news from republicans tonight. Roughly 180,000 Iowa Republicans turned out for caucus night. Thats the biggest turnout ever. They call it unprecedented. Back in 2012 we had about 122,000 registered Republican Voters turn out. Just smached that record, and the numbers are still coming in. Thats rough as of this point. They owe that to a lot of focus as well as the diversity of the field. You had a lot of different candidates to choose from. They were also using a new reporting system this year, microsoft created a mobile app and a lot of sites were using that to report their numbers. The republicans here at the capital say it was fast and accurate. They say it brought the ccuses they were big fans of it. Thats it latest here, guys, back to you. Thank you, forrest and back here with our pan panel tonight. Hillary clinton is really trailing Bernie Sanders in nene hampshire heading into the next setting for the democratic nomination, and is this something that can really give her andhe won back there in 2008 and came back in won i iNew Hampshire is this something that can give her a little more push to get a little closer to sanders in that primary . I think so. It obviously was a difficult outcome for her thann 2008. A lot of things are different this year. Some of the issues are different. She really ran a grassroots campaign. That the results results are going to be dinchtor different for her. Having over 50 is a nice number for her and i think gives her some momentum in New Hampshire, but her particularly in South Carolina, nevada, very strong states for her where you have a higher African American turnout and la tee in a turnout la latina turnout in nevada. Coming in that close with sanders and in South Carolina is going to be a big question mark for him. Hes come a long way since he was announced. He was relatively unknn, but spent a lot of time in iowa and they appreciate and respond to and ran a good campaign, and so it looks like he might come occupy a little bit chort here, but moving to a little bit more friendly turfrf in New Hampshire. Optimism coming out of here as secretary clin to be. We have cruz, trump, rubio and ben carson at about 9 tonight. Weve had Mike Huckabee annouce hes suspending his campaign. Are you an anticipating others dropping out before New Hampshire . I think there will be a number of them staying through New Hampshire. Iowa and New Hampshire are very different electorates. Hans and carrie real fast, tt Republican Party, a lot of people are seeing this as a party thats split. Of course weve seen this many, many times in the past with parties going into elections, but are they at the point now that a lot of people in the establishment of the Republican Party dont like ted cruz. Is this something, though, going into the caus with rubio doing as well as he did could be kind
