"i've never seen the ocea country. so i figured if you want to see it for the first time, why not do it in a hurricane?" "are you going to get out of here soon?" "of course, of course."other s -- choosing to stay. "we're prepared for it. we're going to hunker down and stay with it and do what we gotta do."...this -- despite dire warnings from florida governor rick scott. florida "i'm worried about your life. your family. evacuate, evacuate, evacuate."scott -- adding that matthew could bring devastation on a level not seen since hurricane andrew struck nearly a quarter century ago. forecasters -- also expressing a very high level of concern. the national weather service - warning that some locations "may be uninhabitable for weeks or families here in eastern iowa matthew's path in the caribbean. 3 catholic churches in eastern iowa have a sister parish about 20 miles outside of port au prince, haiti. so far, there aren't any known deaths or injuries within the parish staff or congregation s. the churches shelter. there are 12 chapels inside the sister parish. and each chapel has a school attached. staff there say their primarily concerned about its students' education. the children are safe, but the hurricane's damage will affect the children in the future. "8:43, "the hurricane took out a lot of the gardens were in the mountains we're a rural parish so they don't have the food now so they're going to spend money for food and the money they spend on food they won't be able to spend on tuition so well subsidize the tuition." the local churches hope to help about 5,000 kids the hurricane impacted. a disaster relief organization that brings veterans together is in eastern iowa -- helping people last week's flooding affected. team rubicon is helping homeowners in waterloo and cedar falls through next week. the organization is made up of military veterans, who respond to areas natural disasters have hit. veterans say work camaraderie, while helping people who are in need. "what we're doing is helping residents get back into a regular life that's been disrupted by this flood. we're moving debris, drywall, flooring anything you can imagine. " team rubicon is also helping flooding victims in wisconsin and minnesota. a dubuque county man is the 8th person to face charges in connection to a robbery and homicide the u-s marshals arrested eric campbell in calumet city, illinois- south of chicago- earlier this week. he faces a first-degree murder and first-degree robbery charge. officers had been looking for him in the death of collin brown. investigators say he and others tried to rob brown at his mobile home on noonan street in key west, back in april. someone shot brown as he was running away from his home. he later died. he was 21 years old. 3 others also face 1st- degree murder and 1st-degree robbery charges for tacari minifee and imere hall. 4 more people face lesser charges in this case. light the night pink. that's what some people in cedar rapids did tonight to mark the national breast cancer awareness month. mercy medical center and alliant energy hosted the annual lighting ceremony at the hall- perrine cancer center. the center will remain lit in pink throughout the month. organizers say the event is to let more people know about breast cancer, which more than 200,000 people in the u-s are diagnosed with every year. 10:40:27;08 "getting e to just help support our patients and all of our family and friends that have had breast cancer " a $2 dollar donation for each person in attendance went to especially for you fund. that helps provide free mammograms and other breast-care services to people in need. a sense of freedom is engrained in the minds of practically all americans. a new study shows not all states are as free as we may think, but iowa ranks pretty high. clouds will be around for much of the morning with clearing sky this afternoon. highs will generally be in the upper 50s to lower 60s. the weekend continues to look great with highs well into the 60s both days. no frost is expected this weekend, though temperatures at night will cool down to the lower 40s. next week, the mi conditions to continue. moisture is very limited with the next front that arrives on monday night. have a great weekend! "we have a relatively traditional american is. it's the ability of individuals to use their life, liberty and property as they see fit." william ruger with the cato institute spent over a year comparing each state's policies affecting economic and personal freedom. "these states are laboratories of democracy. they are experimenting with different policies and there's not a one size fits all approach." "to determine the rankings, the authors looked at state and local government intervention. they compared 230 educational choice, and drug policy." the most free state in the country goes to new hampshire. oklahoma comes in at number two. indiana three.. south dakota four.alaska five. tennessee six.idaho seven..florid a eight. and iowa rounds out the top nine."iowa is one of those states that does fairly well across the board in the three areas we look at." but ruger says the hawkeye state doesn't do well on gun freedoms and private schooling is associated with many regulations. "the good news was all of our kids are okay. so we're very grateful that we were able to keep them sheltered in a place where they were protected." the organization say the water towers providing people with clean ballots from linn county this year compared to the presidential election 4 years ago. 4 years ago, voters had requested more than 22,000 ballots to vote absentee by this time. now, the number requested is slightly more than 14,000. that's a drop of more than 8,500 compared to 4 years ago. linn county auditor joel miller says both parties apparently held off longer than 4 years ago to send absentee forms to supporters. that means the numbers should start going back up soon. "i hope it catches up because if it doesn't we'll potentially hae we haven't had those in the last several years." auditor miller says the number of people voting absentee at the election office counter is running about the same as 4 years ago. people in marion are getting their first chance today at meeting the 4 candidates vying to become the next police chief. the job opened up when chief harry daugherty retired earlier this year. people in marion can meet the 4 it'll be from 5:30 to 6:30 at the marion public library. each of the candidates have at least 2 decades of police experience. lieutenant scott elam and captain doug slagle are currently on the marion police force the 2 others come from out of state. joseph mchale is a commander in the kansas city, missouri, police department. and george austin is the captain of internal affairs with the charlotte - mecklenburg police department in north carolina. people in cascade will soon get a look at the plans to rebuild the only state highway running through the town. will host an informational meeting about planned repairs to highway 136 next wednesday. the meeting will run from 4 to 7 at cascade's city hall. the portion of the highway undergoing repairs runs from the intersection with first ave to the northern city limits. some students in the central city school district got to stick their principal to the wall. it was part of a challenge to raise the money to fund an honor flight for veterans to high schools competed against each other. students duct taped the principal of the school that did not win to the wall for the lunch hour. "i'll just be a little more aware. i'll try to use it less. unusual or loose attachments on the a-t-m. police also recommend monitoring your bank account for any purchases you didn't make. if you do see that an atm has been tampered with, call police immediately. a 20-year-old davenport man is charged with shooting and killing his parents. 20-year-old sean freese is facing 2 counts of first-degree murder. police says they found his parents, kevin and donna freese, shot to death in their home in the on davenport's northwest side overnight wednesday. investigators say sean they didn't discuss his motive. "i'd seen kids out playing basketball at their hoop a couple times, and they waved at me. just seemed like such a normal family. " sean freese lived with his parents. he is being held on $1 million cash only bond. there's a possible break through in the search for a cure in parkinson's disease, which affects about 1 million americans. researchers at iowa state university have found a parkinson's. the science is pretty complex, so they say its hard to estimate a timeline on the research. but they hope to make solid progress within 5 years. this discovery gives scientists a new target to look at when it comes to fighting parkinson's disease. "what we call susceptible targets, so we can double up on some drugs or other strategies to increase the protein levels in parkinson's patients. " the protein found may protect brain cells. researchers say this protein is released to deal with the strain. it then can assist with the survival of the cells. a dog may not have nine lives -- but a dog that survived a river rescue in maquoketa may have more than one. this dog was found stranded at lakehurst dam in maquoketa. she was there for at least 2 days. onlookers suspect the pit-mix had been left there on purpose, possibly because she just delivered puppies. after one failed attempt above the swirling current, a rescue boat saved the dog. the humane society rescued she'll probably sleep most the rest of the day and get something to eat." " ""animals are just like humans. they deserve kindness. they deserve to be treated just like anybody else." " this dog, lucky for now, will spend about 10 days at the jackson county humane society. contact their office in maquoketa if you're interested in adopting her. a marion teenager received a special gift for her 18th birthday last week. a time capsule chest full of letters, cards, newspapers and mementos all written on he birthday. it was sealed away until her 18th birthday. now, the video her mother took of her opening the chest has gone viral on facebook. abby van metre says she had no idea she was going to receive the special gift. "14:33:35;02 i think really just having letters from people that i don't, i wouldn't have had another chance to talk to, that was just incredible, and the fact that there were so many people in my life that had really cared about me and took the time to hand-write letters for me for 18 years later was just incredible.
