And its asking people who dont need to be there to stay away so large equipment can get in for cleanup. The flood zone will be open to everyone else starting at seven saturday morning. That klarge equipment will be in the area for a few weeks as as part of the flood recovery. As a safety measure, police will step up their patrols. Now that people are returning to their homes and businesses, many will be anxious to get properly. Starting at seven this morning, there will be drop off sites for businesses and non profits. The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance is running the sites. Workers there are asking people let them know ahead of time if the sandbags are wet or dry, so that the bags can be stacked accordingly. 7 18, you get them here leave them here, the district and our Funding Partners and figuring out how to haul them away at no cost to the businesses. Businesses and non profits have four dropoff locations for sandbags. One is on the east side of downtown between the quaker oats and cargill plants. Another is next to the former chrome horse building in newbo. A third is the parking lot behind the shops on 16th avenue southwest in czech village. And finally, there one near Second Avenue and l street southwest in kingston village. The city has two locations for homeowners to drop off wet and dry sandbags. The noelridge pool site opens at opens at seven am saturday. Anyone who cant drop off sandbags should leave them at their curb. The city will start picking them up on monday, october 10th. The hesco barriers blocking bridge entrances over the cedar river are starting to come down today. But with that comes driving restrictions. The end to flood zone restrictions will come in stages. This morning, edgewood road crossing the cedar river bridges should be cleared today. But regular motorists will have to wait for the all clear saturday morning. With most working long 12hour shifts, he says the fraternal orders temple was the perfect spot to provide a warm place to rest and grab a bite to eat. First responders say the long days they faced were a little easier with the help of english and the volunteers at the lodge. After this weeks flooding the newbo district business, tornados pub and grub, hopes to reopen soon. Thats even though it was on the wet side of the citys temporary flood wall. The city set up hesco barriers on 16th avenue southeast, leaving most of newbo dry to the west buildings flooded to the east. Owner tom slaughter and his family stayed inside tornados during the flood. Sandbags protected the building, and they used pumps to fight the rising water. Slaughter says he wound up with only about a foot of water in the basement. He thinks he can clean that up on his own without filing a Flood Insurance claim. We may lost the water heater. Besides that we didnt suffer any damage we stayed every night since last friday, we have the citys decision to leave his business and others on the wet side of the 16th avenue flood wall. But the city says it had to put the hesco barriers on solid pavement, and the street was the only option. Members of the American Red Cross are trying to keep morale high as people start to return home. They dont know exactly whats going on. Theres lots of anxiety. Theyve lost their homes. Theyve maybe lost some of theyre going back to. And theyre more concerned with that than they are the Living Conditions the red cross housed more than 60 people at st pauls United Methodist church. And housed dozens of people at the Cedar Hills Community Church this week. The red cross is also supplying free clean up kits for those who did have water damage. People from the federal Emergency Management agency, or fema, toured flood counties. They took photos, spoke with homeowners, and measured how high flood waters rose inside buildings. Theyll send that information to the governor. Then, governor branstad will decide if hell ask president obama for a federal disaster declaration, which would qualify the area for federal aid.
