" 39:53, "we would like to avoid students crossing penn street and dubuque street but also acknowledge kids have habits and they've walked to school that way for years. " a crossing guard died last school year in north liberty after a car hit her at the intersection of penn and stewart streets. getting ready for the school year can be time- consuming -- and some in iowa city may need some extra time. students heading to south east jr. high will have to start the year. kcrg-tv nine's brea love went to that intersection of 1st avenue and bradford drive. brea, how does the district recommend parents navigate construction? chris and nicole, the number one thing is if your child can ride the bus do so. this construction allows zero pedestrian, bike, or vehicle access. the construction impacts three area schools tate high, city high and south east jr. high. south east being right next to the construction, is the most affected. the mentioned, it's recommended that everyone who can ride the bus, ride it. parents drop off and pick up be at the mercer aquatic center next door. principal michelle cook says bradford drive will be a busy road until this is done. that's why she's asking drivers who use bradford to be extra aware for a while. 9:59 "knowing we have 844 students that are going to be released at 3 o'clock that's a lot of pedestrian traffic, so if cars could just be aware take a little more time, go a little slower, and avoid this area if at all possible." the construction is expected to take about two weeks. until then drivers should watch for children and vice versa. a reminder that first avenue from bradford drive to mall drive is closed today. coming up in our next half hour we'll look deeper into some of those alternate routes for students. work over the summer. a storm with strong wind ripped the roof off the school building in may. after workers put up a new roof, school staff spent the summer cleaning up the classrooms that had some damage. one administrator told us the whole ordeal taught students a little something about teamwork. "they will remember this. but they will remember it fondly that we were able work together to fix this. ""that prayer is not just for us and for the sacred stone camp and for standing rock sioux nation, it's also a sincere prayer for all those downstream, for all the communities that are going to be affected by this pipeline, affected by oil and gas de this is the second time protesters have demonstrated in north dakota's capitol city. the first happened at the south entrance of the capitol last week. health officials have confirmed the first case of the zika virus in south dakota. but they say there's no cause for concern. the state department of health says a south dakota woman who traveled to the caribbean contracted the virus. a state official says it shouldn't spread, because the type of mosquito that carries the zika specialist agrees there's no reason for people to worry about catching it. " a cedar rapids woman says she did everything she could to go back to save her boyfriend from a house fire. he later died at the hospital. alize watson says her neighbor came to her rescue with a ladder when she climbed out onto her roof trying to get away from the flames. the fire started at 611 a avenue northwest just before two yesterday morning. firefighters believe it started in the kitchen when the stove. firefighters pulled naquave whitlock from the burning house. he later died at a hospital. he was 22. watson, who was his girlfriend, also went to the hospital. she told t-v nine she is in shock and grieving the loss of her boyfriend. but she is grateful for her neighbor, who rescued her. "he was trying to get that ladder fixed and i'm like, just catch me, just catch me somebody just catch me" " the cedar rapids fire department plans to nominate her neighbor for one of the state's a jury will soon decide if a waterloo man is guilty of 1st degree murder. yesterday, jurors heard closing arguments in the trial of perquondis holmes, who is 25 years old. prosecutors say holmes fired gunshots at a car that had pulled into an apartment building's parking lot in november 20- 13. the shots killed daequan campbell, who was 18. this is the second time holmes is on trial for the death. a judge threw out his previous conviction because the trial included evidence that jurors alliance says some changes to this year's market after dark will help with overcrowding issues from last year's market. some people complained about how cramped last year's after dark market was. but this year, the cedar rapids metro economic alliance says it has expanded the boundaries from 7 blocks to 19 blocks. it is also allowing people who purchase a blue cup, which lets them walk around with beer or wine instead of crowding inside the bars. brick's bar and grill owner sam tracy says he hopes the changes will help out.
