The post shows part of a gun permit request, and lists the prior offenses of the person who wants the permit. Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabeck says he doesnt want to issue the permit because of all the offenses, but state law says he has to. In 2011, lawmakers changed iowas gun law from may issue to shall issue. Under may issue, sheriffs could deny gun permits for nearly any reason. Shall issue allows sheriffs to deny permits only for specific reasons, sucuc as alcoholism, mental illness, or past felony convictions. Pulkrabeck says he posted the permit application on facebook to make a point. He says someone with an offense like a no contact order should not get a gun permit. Its just another glaring example of someone who i would not, and i think the general public would not consider a law pulkrabeck says he would have to petition for a change in the law to deny such an application. He says he doesnt believe lawmakers will make changes any time soon, but he hopes they will eventually reevaluate the gun law. Two republican president ial candidates are making stops in iowa today. Two central iowa men have already died from the flu just this fall. Experts say unlike last year, should be more effective. Kcrgtv9s Forrest Saunders joins us now. Forrest, whats different about this years shot . According to the cdc this years vaccine is expected to be around 60 percent effective, up from around 20 percent last year. Flu season in the United States can begin as early as october and last as late as may. During this time, flu viruses are circulating at higher levels in the u. S. Population. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community. Flu vaccination should begin soon after vaccine becomes available, if possible by october. However, as long as flu viruses are circulating, vaccination should continue to be offered later. While seasonal influenza outbreaks can happen as early as october, during most seasons influenza activity peaks in january or later. Since it takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against influenza virus infection, it is best that people get vaccinated so they are protected before influenza begins spreading in their community. Flu vaccine is produced by private manufacturer s, and the timing of availability depends on when production is completed. Shipments began in august and will continue throughout october and november until all vaccine is distributed. A task force is working to find a School Schedule solution in iowa city.
