University of iowa doctors are excited about a new treatment of muscular dystrophy. Just yesterday the fda approved the drug eteplirsen. The drug provides therapy to kids with duchenne muscular dystrophy, and may help increase protein in the muscles. Kids with muscular distrophy often need wheelchairs at young ages and may only live into their 20s and 30s. The drug has been on trial at the university of iowa for months. One family says it can tell its already helping their 5year old son. Its probably more stabilization that were seeing with him, which is fantastic, so its not as steep the fda has been heavily criticized for approving the new drug before doing more extensive clinical trials.
