"he treats my kids like they're his own. " then she's off to her night shift job. income from her second job helps pay child care bills. "it's definitely heart breaking. when somebody will send you a picture and says this is what they are doing. and i am at work just trying to pay for someone else to watch my children. " her family spends almost 12 hundred dollars per month for daycare. that's much more than her home mortgage. "it's not about do i want a bigger family. it's, i can't even make relying on the government for some kind of aid. " a few miles away, alyssa hennings says she and her husband work opposite shifts so they can afford daycare for their baby. "not only am i giving over my itty bitty little baby, but we're also giving over like a fourth of our paycheck. " a child's age. directors at the ymca childcare center say age matters because of state mandated staff to child ratios. the state requires one staff member for every eight preschool aged child. one staff for every six toddlers. and one staff for every four infants. "that's where the money goes is for those people who bond with your children." while census data shows average rates have risen 70- percent since 1985, that has followed the cost of inflation. directors say just because parents are paying a lot, doesn't mean the staff is bringing home a big paycheck. "childcare staff are possibly the most underpaid staff in the workforce." besides covering staff's wages, childcare centers use child tuition for oper supplies, curriculum and continuing education for teachers. "if you work for childcare, you're in it because you love children. you're not in it because you're making lots of money. "there's a large percent of white americans that undert now we're currently concentrating on black lives and that's what the march is for. to recognize that we do understand that all lives matter, but today in america black lives are suffering greatly." others said they were there to protest what they call hateful comments against minorities from president-elect donald trump. the pre-trial conference for a former washington high school substitute teacher is today. today, she will go to trial in tama county. a cedar rapids judge approved a change of venue. haglin's lawyer says the news coverage of the case would prevent a fair trial in linn county. haglin admitted to having a relationship with a student in several t-v interviews. authorities have since increased her charge to a felony. today, the dubuque community school district is reviewing a book that some parents say contains obscene material. "the perks of being a wallflower" is required reading for students in one class at he high school. the parents say the book's "graphic sex scenes" and depictions of drugs and alcohol use surprised them. tonight during an open meeting, a committee will discuss the use of the book. that meeting is at 4 tonight at the forum on 2300 chaney road. this friday, the hawkeyes and nebraska cornhuskers will be rivals on the football field. several days before kickoff, fans from the two schools are teaming up for veteran suicide awareness. last year, the university of walk, marching 280 miles from minneapolis to iowa city. this year, the group is working with a nebraska veterans student organization to march from lincoln, nebraska to iowa city. that's about 344 miles. more than 200 volunteers will carry the game ball plus 22 pounds of weight to represent the 22 veterans who commit suicide every day. "kind of provide an event where veterans and family members and really the public can come together in nebraska and the state to do something and have a purpose. " the hawkeye volunteers with take the game ball today in menlo. they will then march it the rest of the way to kinnick stadium. the ruck walk will also support the group, operation engage america, which supports veteran resource fairs across the u-s. a decision to run towards danger has earned two iowa men the title of hy-vee heroes. each year during the iowa, nebraska game, the teams, the red cross, and hy-vee honor us how these men are being honored for their courage. brea? chris and nicole, this saturday, ken blazek and brock staley will receive that honor for saving their neighbors life after her house exploded. june 27 started out as a typical day for these two. but that changed, within a matter of moments. "43:07i realized that i could actually hear the gas, and since i just mowed a half hour before, i actually knew where the shut off was for the gas line, so i knew i had to fight anything, or be first responders for anything if we didn't get that off." staley has more than 20 years of fire fighting experience. once the gas was off, he says that training kicked in. he fought as much of the fire inside as he could, and got barnes out. "48:57i picked her up, helped her up, we walked off got her not more than 30 seconds later, the house was fully engulfed." she was taken to the hospital, and blazek and staley walked away with nothing
