" at this point, we're still waiting to complete the investigation pending release of at this point we're just focusing on jerime's health. that's really his family's main priority at this time." i spoke to the iowa dci earlier today, and they say there is no timetable for when the investigation will be complete. in cedar rapids, phil reed, kcrg tv-9 news the linn county attorney says police can't release the video until the investigation is over. but the iowa public information board disagrees, saying state law would allow it. west des moines is paying nearly two million dollars to settle a sex a female sergeant claimed police chief shaun ladue discriminated against her because she's a woman. two other women settled in similar lawsuits earlier this year. chief ladue resigned over the weekend. the west des moines city manager didn't say whether chief ladue's resignation was connected to the settlement. but he says he asked the chief to resign because of his leadership. " we are reaching a point in the department if you're the majority of the the leader, then then whatever that person does is ineffective. " the city is stressing the settlement will not mean an additional cost to taxpayers. last year the state patrol disciplined a supervisor for a facebook joke about killing a sportscaster. now that supervisor is on administrative leave, but the state won't say why. the department of public safety says lieutenant kelly hindman is on paid leave. he commands the patrol's post in fort dodge. on facebook that he wanted a sniper to shoot e-s-p-n college basketball announcer dan dakich in the head. aftr an internal investigation, hindman kept his supervisor position. he's been with the patrol 28 years. two iowa legislators want ideas on how to fight the state's opioid abuse crisis. that's according to our coverage partners k-d- t-h. state representativ e chuck isenhart of dubuque and legislative committee. the committee is studying ways to combat opioid abuse. this afternoon, the lawmakers are meeting with people in dubuque. that's at northeast iowa community college's town clock center at 1. senator joni ernst wants more information from the u-s department of veteran affairs after 32 year old veteran took his own life. it happened november 7th after the v-a told curtis gearhart he would have to wait for help. stress disorder. ernst wrote a letter to the v-a inspector general demanding an investigation into why the v-a was unable to provide care for him. a friend says he knew gearhart had memories that haunted him. "47:55 it's really unfortunate i guess the best way i can put it that we don't have better healthcare or mental health care for the va " hopes she doesn't have to write to the v-a against about another iowan veteran not getting adequate care. in september, senator ernst also called for an investigation into the iowa city v-a after a veteran committed suicide following a trip to the center. brandon ketchum's family says he asked a doctor at the iowa city v-a to admit him to the psychiatric ward in july. but they say the doctor refused, and ketchum killed himself hours later. the federal government has identified the remains from oelwein. now he'll receive a proper burial with full honors. marine private first class wilbur mattern was 23 when he died fighting on a pacific ocean island during world war two. the government recently found his remains inside a burial site there. mattern will receive a proper burial next monday, november 21st, at arlington national cemetery near washington, d-c. dozens of seniors living in a des moines assisted living facility have a month to find a walden point is dropping its assisted living services to become regular senior housing. that means residents who can't take care of themselves have to move. the c-e-o of walden point's management company says they haven't been able to line up a new vendor for food and nursing services. so the owner set the 30 day deadline to drop assisted living services. "13:44-"i just don't know what to do - this was my home and i hate giving it up." " the c-e-o of the management company operating walden point says they are working with social workers and have extra staff on site to help during this transition. the cedar rapids city council has unanimously rejected a townhome project called the commons. a company wanted to build the 50-unit complex on blairs ferry road, about a mile west of edgewood road. the city council turned down the rezoning request after complaints from with a major renovation to the ped mall. last night, the city council voted to hire an engineering firm. crews will improve underground electrical components and pipes. they'll also rework the brick walkway, replace planters and add an elevated stage. as work finishes up on the washington street project, downtown businesses will have a year off from construction. "construction crews have been really mindful of working around the businesses and making sure they have access it'll will always remain open regardless of construction 33:15 " the engineering firm will spend most of next year planning the eight million dollar project. construction will start in 20-18 and will take about two years. a dangerous intersection on highway 20 has re-opened after a complete overhaul. the intersection is where seventh street southwest met highway 20 on the west edge of dyersville. in recent years, several people have died there from from seventh street and created an interchange a little farther west. it removed the turning lanes, and built on- ramps, and an overpass for highway 20. during a ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday, the mayor called for a moment of silence as they dedicated the new, safer interchange to the people who've lost their lives. "it's unbelievable how many people have lost their lives here. and this interchange and overpass is going to improve the safety here for everybody. " state representativ e phyllis thede says kaufmann's legislation threatens freedom of speech. ""i don't want to go after somebody because they're fearful or they're upset or they're angry. that's not what legislators do." " iowa public four-year universities say they haven't spent any extra money on election- related events. university of northern iowa students and faculty gathered for three sessions to discuss the election and their fears. and faculty held a rally, and university of iowa student groups also held events. the iowa city city council has voted to allow its police department to temporarily "overhire," increasing the diversity of the police force. iowa city budgeted for 66 uniformed officers working the streets. one officer recently left and another will retire by the end of the year. but police can now hire four officers because three of the next four candidates on the certified us in the studio. brea, a lot of police departments are trying to increase diversity. nicole, police in iowa city say if city council didn't approve the over hiring, iowa city police would have probably lost candidates to other departments. and because the city typically needs to hire five or six new officers a year.. officials say it wouldn't cost the city a lot to hirer sooner rather than later. the extra cost will come from temporarily over-staffing. the city will have to find an additional 77-hundred dollars a month for each officer. that's untl retiring. iowa city police say they were lucky to get a number of diverse applicants. "if i wait eight months from now, that won't be the case just because those qualified african-american applicants can go work anywhere they want" " iowa city reserved four training spots at the state law enforcement academy for january. the extra minority officers hired will bring police close to the racial makeup of the entire community. up slightly more than 92 percent of the iowa city department... and black officers just over three percent. with the new hires, that department's makeup would change to 88 percent white officers and almost eight percent black officers. the 2010 census put the black population in the city at just under six percent. and nicole, cedar rapids police are also looking to hire officers for full time positions. you can find more information about qualifications and salary with this story on kcrg dot com. donations ar officers in cedar rapids. it's after a woman verbally attacked police and posted her remarks on facebook. nats - we got popo wearing a black thing on her badge cause she's sorry a couple of cops got whacked. the woman live streamed herself cussing out three officers who were wearing black bands in honor of two officers a gunman killed in des moines this month. the woman's outburst happened at brewhemia in the out for trespassing. now, customers of brewhemia are donating to a cause called operation "blue"-hemia. the coffee shop's owners say it started with a couple of customers offering to buy coffee for police officers. the shop has since moved the campaign to go fund me and has raised more than 12- hundred dollars. "both of them have been shining examples to our current students of what we would hope to turn out as officers who are serving the public, and i think that is probably their greatest legacy.
