"his statement this was being done for us so we could vote and almost a year out from a presidential election that was just so disturbing to me." judge says the decision by republicans, and grassley as judiciary committee chair, was a refusal to do what voters elected them to do. she thought it was an issue that would strike a chord with iowa voters. judge, during the farm crisis years of the early 1980's, worked as a federal mediator settling disputes between farmers and lenders. she wonders if that experience wouldn't serve the state well now. "we've got to get back to at least talking to each other a that's where the skills of a mediator come into play. as a mediator you learn to actively listen and weigh facts and weight what's in front of you before you make decisions." judge says if elected she'd like to serve on the senate ag committee where her family background would come into play. again that was kcrg tv9's dave franzman. judge says she knows some recent polls show her 17 or 18 points behind incumbent grassley. but she's not ready to say it's and tonight at 6, we'll take a look at judge's challenger, republican chuck grassley, as he goes for a 7th term in the senate. republican presidential nominee donald trump is using the last few election days to attack hillary clinton over her private email server. speaking in michigan yesterday, trump says the former secretary of state broke the law continually. he claims that she lied to the fbi and destroyed evidence on her phone and in emails. "hillary clinton's corruption is a threat to democracy and democracy is to get out and vote by the millions. " currently, mrs. clinton has not been charged with any wrongdoing. the f-b-i chose not to recommend charges this summer over her use of a private email sever while she was secretary of state. but it is now looking at emails found on the computer of anthony weiner, the estranged husband of a top clinton dispell any concerns about the new email investigation while on campaign trail. clinton's campaign is upset f-b-i director james comey notified lawmakers of the investigation without explaining what exactly the bureau is looking for. the democratic nominee assured her supporters in cincinnati she's got nothing to fear. "the floating islands expect them to remove based on the types of plants that we used and the sizes of them. and what that tells us is this particular best management practice is a really good fit for iowa ponds and small lakes." this project is a proof of concept.. to see how these islands perform in the there was an 80 percent reduction in phosphorus.. and a 70 percent reduction in nitrogen. data-wise the islands were mostly the same but they grew better than research claimed.. "based on other peoples data, the root systems of these plants were only supposed to grow like the first year you're only supposed to get about a foot of depth below the islands. and we had massive root growth. there were two or three feet hanging below the islands when difference is normally the plants need two years to become effective.. this project only had about 5 months on the lake.. "so the fact that we had to remove them was a problem in terms of their long term status and their actual performance so that would be the next logical step is to find a location to test these where we can leave them permanently or semi- permanently." that next step also includes a look at what plants would be best.. iowa good looking plants.. rather than species that are most effective.. like cattails.. stewart says they wanted to use iowa native plants.. and found 18 varieties.. but there's not enough research on plants that are good at getting rid of nutrients.. and they had to risk it on six iowa varieties.. but the results were surprising. "we still got, the same. our data was basically exactly the same for how many nutrients they were able to pull out en mass as to other studies that had used plants that had specifically known uptake rates. so even results. which is very promising." the i-s-u team drafted a technical guideline of the project for the national resource conservation service.. stewart says that's also promising.. "she was really a nice person. she was always there for everyone. and really like a loving person. she had a great personality " police also found a 78- year-old man beaten in the house. he's in critical condition. neighbors say he owned the house and was renting it to the mother and daughter. today, staff, students, and people living in iowa city will remember those who died from a shooting on the university of iowa campus 25 years ago. on november first, 1991, former graduate student, gang lu, shot and killed five people. he killed three physics professors and a then, at jessup hall, he shot and killed a university vice president and critically wounded a student. he then shot and killed himself. he reportedly had been angry because he had not won a prize for his physics dissertation. today's ceremony starts at 4:30 this afternoon on the north side of the old capitol building between jessup and macbride halls. the university's executive vice president and provost will speak first and then a representativ e from the physics and astronomy department. u-i will eventually place a permanent memorial on the north sido in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. the cedar rapids city council is moving ahead with its first permanent flood protection berm. today, the council is reporting on bids for the sinclair levee. this is video of their groundbreaking ceremony last month. the project includes a pump station and detention basin project. the city is estimating the project will cost close to $6 million dollars. if you were out trick or treating last night, your kids are probably counting -- or and if you're not planning to eat it all, there's another option. operation gratitude gathers more than 120 tons of candy across the nation each year. the candy will go into care packages for troops abroad. this is the third year the cedar rapids smile center will participate. you can donate any unopened pieces of candy in the lobby and get a dollar a pound, up to five pounds. owner dr. yossi says it's a nice thing for troops to get to remind them of home.
