"his statement this was being done for us so we could vote and almost a year out from a presidential election that was just so disturbing to me." judge says the decision by republicans, and grassley as judiciary committee chair, was a refusal to do what voters elected them to do. she thought it was an issue that would strike a chord with iowa voters. judge, during the farm crisis years of the early 1980's, worked as a federal mediator settling disputes between farmers and lenders. she wonders if that experience wouldn't serve the state well now. "we've got to get back to at least talking to each other a that's where the skills of a mediator come into play. as a mediator you learn to actively listen and weigh facts and weight what's in front of you before you make decisions." judge says if elected she'd like to serve on the senate ag committee where her family background would come into play. again that was kcrg tv9's dave franzman. judge says she knows some recent polls show her 17 or 18 points behind incumbent grassley. but she's not ready to say it's and tonight at 6, we'll take a look at judge's challenger, republican chuck grassley, as he goes for a 7th term in the senate. republican presidential nominee donald trump is using the last few election days to attack hillary clinton over her private email server. speaking in michigan yesterday, trump says the former secretary of state broke the law continually. he claims that she lied to the fbi and destroyed evidence on her phone and in emails. "hillary clinton's corruption is a threat to democracy and democracy is to get out and vote by the millions. " currently, mrs. clinton has not been charged with any wrongdoing. the f-b-i chose not to recommend charges this summer over her use of a private email sever while she was secretary of state. but it is now looking at emails found on the computer of anthony weiner, the estranged husband of a top clinton dispell any concerns about the new email investigation while on campaign trail. clinton's campaign is upset f-b-i director james comey notified lawmakers of the investigation without explaining what exactly the bureau is looking for. the democratic nominee assured her supporters in cincinnati she's got nothing to fear. " i've been fighting for families and underdogs my entire life and i'm not stopping now " accusing comey of potentially affecting the election, something federal employees are not allowed to do. as the presidential polls in iowa show the race tied - or close to it - expect more campaigning in our state over the next 7 days. former president bill clinton will be in waterloo, des moines and sioux city tomorrow. the campaign hasn't announced the times and specific locations where those events will take place. vice presidential candidate tim kaine will be in dubuque and des moines, also on wednesday. tomorrow. vermont senator bernie sanders will also make a stop iowa at some point before november 8th. it's part of a 12 state tour to campaign for hillary clinton. he hasn't said where or when he will be here. the iowa d-o-t is considering more changes for an intersection in rural benton county. it's where 55th street going west out of urbana connects with highway 150. a crash there in 2015 killed 5 young people. people about a $2 million dollar project that would turn the highway 150 curve into a t- intersection. the mayor of urbana says the intersection is safe if people follow the rules. but some others disagree. "i do not understand why they don't want to change it. i want the change. 1600 other people want the change. and if they want me to go through and get more petitions, i think i can get 2,000 people to sign it input meeting at 5 p-m tomorrow at center point- urbana high school. kids and families collected a lot of candy for halloween. and today, they have a chance to give some of it to our service men and women. cedar rapids smile center is accepting candy at its office tonight and, in return, giving back cash. it's for operation gratitude, an initiative sending candy to soldiers. for every pound donated at the event tonight, guests will receive 1 dollar. that up to 5 pounds. can be oral hygiene products like mouthwash or a tooth brush as well. all of it will be collected and put into individual care packages for troops abroad. doctors at the center say it's a great way to show troops some appreciation. "25:27count your loot, see what you have, and if there's anything you can spare. both as a little gobble or ghost, or an adult that just doesn't want to have any of that candy around we'd be happy to take it." runs until 6 at the cedar rapids smile center. iowa is looking pay more to the insurance companies managing the state's medicaid. now the state is attempting to figure out where the nearly 33 million dollars will come from. plan on a very warm start to few hours of the day, primarily over the northern half of the area. there's a cold front that has stalled across the region, allowing for a 15 degree temperature spread across eastern iowa. the fog is l the cold side of this front. today, plan on highs into the upper 60s north with lower to middle 70s farther south. our weather continues to look active late tonight into wednesday the time everything is all through late on wednesday. from thursday through early next week, dry conditions are anticipated with highs generally in the mid-60s and this is around 10 degrees above normal both day and night. have a good day! today: partly cloudy and mild. wind: n 5-10. high: 72 ne 5-10. low: 55 tomorrow: showers and storms likely, especially south of highway 20. wind: ne 5-15. high: 60 tom. night: gradual clearing. wind: n 5-15. low: 44 money to the three private insurance companies that manage medicaid. the iowa department of human services says the state will pay about $33 million dollars more. it's unclear whether the d-h-s would take on those costs, or whether governor branstad would request extra funding from lawmakers. many democratic lawmakers have criticized the program. but governor branstad says the state will save about $110 million dollars state says additional money it had to spend is partly because of the increased costs of prescription drugs. farm lakes across the u-s are having problems with nutrients. in today's agribusiness report, iowa state university has created floating islands, in an effort to curb that problem. but right now, here's a look at today's opening farm markets. good morning! report, i'm david geiger. ---- farm lakes across the u-s have problems with nutrients... with all the agricultural land around them.. it's pretty normal to have surface and ground water push phosphorus or nitrogen from the soil into the lake.. ---- vegetated floating islands are a part of a project designed to clean up the water.. in spring of 2015.. ow planted flowers and perennials into a wire mesh designed to let roots grow through.. then set plant islands off floating into lake lavern. the idea is those roots.. when fully formed.. will dredge the lake for excess nutrients.. then last fall.. researchers pulled them out.. all grown up.. and harvested the plant matter.. on this island they pulled it apart stitch by stitch trying to get every shred of root... in total.. three islands had about 11 pounds of dry weight.. they took the harvest to a limnologist.. who identified all the elements.. after about a year.. the results are in.. "the floating islands expect them to remove based on the types of plants that we used and the sizes of them. and what that tells us is this particular best management practice is a really good fit for iowa ponds and small lakes." this project is a proof of concept.. to see how these islands perform in the there was an 80 percent reduction in phosphorus.. and a 70 percent reduction in nitrogen. data-wise the islands were mostly the same but they grew better than research claimed.. "based on other peoples data, the root systems of these plants were only supposed to grow like the first year you're only supposed to get about a foot of depth below the islands. and we had massive root growth. there were two or three feet hanging below the islands when difference is normally the plants need two years to become effective.. this project only had about 5 months on the lake.. "so the fact that we had to remove them was a problem in terms of their long term status and their actual performance so that would be the next logical step is to find a location to test these where we can leave them permanently or semi- permanently." that next step also includes a look at what plants would be best.. iowa good looking plants.. rather than species that are most effective.. like cattails.. stewart says they wanted to use iowa native plants.. and found 18 varieties.. but there's not enough research on plants that are good at getting rid of nutrients.. and they had to risk it on six iowa varieties.. but the results were surprising. "we still got, the same. our data was basically exactly the same for how many nutrients they were able to pull out en mass as to other studies that had used plants that had specifically known uptake rates. so even results. which is very promising." the i-s-u team drafted a technical guideline of the project for the national resource conservation service.. stewart says that's also promising.. "it's going through the process, so that farmers will be able to use this and get rebates or paid in order to implement these on their land, which is a fantastic outcome." ---- in the report and technical guidelines there are instructions that show how to make an island.. each one costs about 15 hundred dollars.. steward says they tried to wagner adds you could make one on you own.. and in the future.. she would like to see these islands tested in iowa drainage ditches.. even though there are challenges with water flow and anchoring.. she says there have been positive results in other studies. the vegetative floating islands was a part of a 40 thousand dollar grant by the watershed improvement review board.. and partly matched by iowa state university.. trt oc: standard agility, speed, and timing. these are the skills means you're just going nowhere fast. more flops and fails in few hours of the day, primarily over the northern half of the area. there's a cold front that has stalled across the region, allowing for a 15 degree temperature spread across eastern iowa. the fog is located on the cold side of this front. today, plan on highs into the upper 60s north with lower to continues to look active late tonight into wednesday with some spots able to exceed a half inch of rain by the time everything is all through late on wednesday. from thursday through early next week, dry conditions are anticipated with highs generally in the mid-60s and lows in the lower to middle 40s. this is around 10 degrees above normal both day and night. have a good day!today: partly cloudy and mild. wind: n 5-10. high: 72 tonight: isolated showers late in the night. wind: ne 5-10. low: 55 tomorrow: showers and storms likely, especially south of highway 20. n 5-15. low: 44 there's no denying athleticism plays a part on field, court and track. while you can posess all the needed physical attributes, as we see in today's golden klutz, you still need focus. let's start off with lesson of the week never snap the ball unless the holder is looking at the center. and i love it when those big ole lineman have a chance to score a touchdown. but sometimes they get too excited another look he gets tackled by the turf monster. but this lineman from northwest missouri state was able to finish then amazing interception return. and always keep your on the ball this pass vince's off the defenders back for the catch thank you very much. and sometimes the zebras make some pretty good tackles.. but he made the stop. and always be aware of the kicking net on the sidelines. will gobble you up fast. and how bout michigan coach jim harbaugh he brought his glove to the world series just in case. craziest boxing match he knocks out his opponent and then gets into fight with his cornermen. and that was a much tougher fight. worst tee shot four. lookout incoming skud. and finally worst dunk of the week. he comes up just cedar rapids police had a busy overnight responding to three separate incidents. tv-9's brea love is at one scene near coe college where a police officer was trapped inside his vehicle after a crash. stay with your 24 hour news source, kcrg-tv9. it's early morning news. cedar rapids police are investigating a chase and crash near coe college. i'll have more details in a live report. stolen or vandalized political one man decided to change his game plan to keep his signs safe. police have arrested a man across state lines for killing his girlfriend and her daughter in iowa. another man remains in critical condition. good tuesday morning! it's 530 on november 1st. here is a live look at . first, meteorologis t kaj o'mara has your first alert forecast, kaj... plan on a very warm start to november! we do have some fog to deal with for the first few hours of the day, primarily over the northern half of the area. there's a cold front that has stalled across the region, allowing for a 15 degree temperature spread across eastern iowa. the fog is located on the cold side of this front. today, plan on highs into the upper 60s north with lower to middle 70s farther south. our weather continues to look active late tonight into wednesday with some spots able to exceed a half inch of rain by thrgearly xt week, dry conditios generally it d-60s and lows in the lower to middle 40s. this is around 10 degrees above normal both day and night. have a good: partly cloudy and mild. wind: n 5-10. high: 72 tonight: isolated showers late in the night. wind: ne 5-10. low: 55 tomorrow: showers and storms likely, especially south of highway 20. wind: ne 5-15. high: 60 tom. night: gradual clearing. wind: n 5-15. low: 44 thanks kaj. crews in cedar rapids had to pull a police officer this morning. they say the officer crashed in what started as a traffic stop. we're working this morning to get more information on what led up to the crash. kcrg-tv nine's brea love is live close to where this happened on coe college campus. brea, what do you see out there this morning?
