Started offering temporary metal ramps for those needing help. Or permanent wooden ramps spotlight, kcrgtv nines Dave Franzman shows us one volunteer who set a personal record helping others. When it comes to building wheelchair ramps to homes, ron tonneson certainly knows his place. Sot nat the Rockwell Collins retiree always cuts the lumber that the other volunteer builders assemble. He was one of the very first wrap volunteers back in 2003. He helped build o the second but soon it was a dozen or more a year. And this one was special. Number 200. While he doesnt remember them all some, like ramps built for kids, he cant forget. A spina bifida case, the child just had a ball running up and down the ramp with an electric wheelchair once we were done. Just grinning from ear to ear. Ivan rohde was also grinning as he sat and watched the work going on. Rohde has so much its just too much hassle to go up and down stairs. Definitely trapped in the house. We used to get out for dinners but i didnt even try this year wed go out and get it and bring it in. The rohdes applied to get a wheelchair ramp built by wrap volunteers a couple of months ago. All the labor is donated with families just purchasing the materials. The organization has about 25 regular volunteers. And while no one on this crew of retirees helped build as many ramps as tonneson. The yve all built quite a few. When i go back to interview clients after they receive their ramp. How the winners of this years World Food Prize decided to help, next in todays agribusiness report. But right now, heres a look at todays opening farm markets. Good morning its. One point one million children die each year because of mineral and vitamin deficiencies. Missing out on Something Like iron. Can cause cognitive problems in children, fatigue for adults, problems with childbirth. One way to help is to give out supplements. But thats expensive. And you have to do it every year. So the winners of this years World Food Prize. Decided to take food staples and build in more combine varieties that are healthy. With those that are strong yielding. Then get those out to the farmers. Like high zinc rice. Or high iron beans. In africa. A staple food is the white sweet potato. But families there suffer from vitamin a deficiency. So the prize laureates. Worked on an orange sweet potato. That is fortified with vitamin a. Dr. Howarth bouis. One of director of harvestplus. Says a hurdle for the project is the potatoes are a different color and taste a bit different than what people are used to. If you just give it to them and you dont say anything, theyll just see its a strange color and they wont adopt it. So you have to give them a reason, you have to say, this is what happens when your children suffer from vitamin a deficiency. These things go wrong with their health. But if variety, you can protect your family from that. bouis says when farmers get information they tend to switch. Though it does help that the biofortified crops will yield the same or sometimes better than the traditional crop. He estimates four million farm households are using biofortified crops now. Or about 20 million people. Our vision is that 1 billion people will be eating the biofortified crops in 2030. So Going Forward we have a huge job to scale up. Weve identified 32 countries. If we can food supply in those countries as biofortified, then we will have reached a billion people. Bouis says it takes about 10 years of work for a new variety to be distributed to farmers. Grains managed a market analysts thinking theyve finally hit the bottom. I was not involved in the grain market for quite some time, and now im heavily involved. Im long the oats, im long rough rice, im long wheat, and im long corn. Theyve all broken out. I think theyre all going higher. Next week i probably will be long soybeans as well. But currently im long corn from 3. 40, im long wheat from 4. 16, im long the oats from 1. 82, and im long rough rice from 10 dollars. I think the grain market has more room to run. Today its up 160 points. Got more room to run, prices are way too expensive. They could really, really go down another 20 30 percent from todays levels in my opinion. I think hogs are going lower, im in the december soon, were at 44 right now i think youre going to see 35 by christmas. I just, theres too many hogs and now you have grain prices going up. Theres problems around. And thats all i have for the show today. Thanks for tuning in. I hope to see you again next time well post a video every day in the agriculture section of kcrg. Com. This year, were running a little on the high side of that number, said dr. Clifford mitchell, Maryland Department of health and mental hygiene. Doctors say the bacteria lives in warm salt waters, generally impacting people with weak immune systems. Most of the cases we can say come from wound infections, skin infection, consumption of raw shellfish. Its one reason why is real. Its out there, and it will kill you, she said.
