But in this weeks agribusiness report, we look at the colleges that have degrees for it. But right now, heres a look at todays opening farm markets. Good morning its. Welcome to the agribusiness dont hear too much about. But colleges like dmacc. Kirkwood. And iowa state have degrees for just that. One of the ways they gear students with some practical experience. Is through service days. Well this is an excellent opportunity for students from dmacc and kirkwood where were working in whats called the iowa nursery and Landscape Association inservice day. Hello, my names jim mason. Im an adjunct instructor in commercial horticulture at dmacc. The association provids an institution like the Iowa Arboretum like where were at today. Of course it doesnt compete with rural crops and such, but its a very strong portion of agribusiness i believe. I think its really under rated. When you Start Talking the umbrella of trees, greenhouses, landscape opportunities, farmers markets. It really adds up to be a pretty substantial portion of the economy in the state of iowa. Mason says the in service days lets students interact with fellow students from other colleges, other Horticultural Professionals like those at the Iowa Arboretum, as well as other professionals that are a Landscape Association. Most of the markets saw end of the week rallies. With speculators waiting on harvest to ramp up this week. The thing we have in the grain markets here going into the weekend is more positioning Short Covering funds getting out of their big short position in corn and wheat. Willing to stay with their long position on soybeans, weve had an awful lot of moisture in the western midwest giving just a little bit of support to the soybeans on concern of the harvest not going as but overall, realistically were in a big, broad trading range on hold for the start of the fat portion of the harvest that is yet to come. Start to pick up a bit more next week. The Cattle Market has had a real strong week this week. Looks like weve put in a solid cash low at the present time. Looks like the boxed beef levels also down around this 185. Finding some buying interest. Packer margins, retail margins are large and pulling cattle ahead and the weights are current on cattle. The hog market just continues to sit at contract lows. We do have supplies that are going to be large in the Fourth Quarter and all of next year were going to have hog supplies forcast to be up three and a half percent over this last year so rallies are really going to be anchored by just large supplies of not only hogs but also poultry and beef. The Senate Passed a two year Water Resources development act. In a 95 to three vote. Ylast week. The navigation and water projects administered by the army corps of engineers. The house leadership may look at their version as early as this week. And that wraps up the show for today. Thanks for tuning in hope to see you again.
