But it still a major problem which is why january is Cervical Cancer awareness month. Cervical cancer was once one of the most common causes of cancer death for american women. According to the american cancer society, the Cervical Cancer death rate has gone down by more than 50 percent over the last 30 years. The main reason more screening tests. Kcrgtv9s Forrest Saunders is live at Linn County Public Health this morning. Forrest, screenings have become better at finding cancer before its too late . Right, brady and nicole. Screenings have become the number one way to detect the cancer and have made quite the difference. Here with me now is cynthia fiester with Linn County Public Health. Have screenings gotten better in recent years . Are there any ways to prevent cancer . And how effective are they . Screening can find changes in the cervix before cancer develops. It can also find Cervical Cancer early in its most curable stage. Another way to prevent Cervical Cancer is to get vaccinated against human papilloma virus , which causes most cases of Cervical Cancer. Scree ning tests offer the best chance to have Cervical Cancer found at an early stage when successful treatment is likely. Screening can also actually prevent most Cervical Cancers by finding abnormal cervix cell changes so that they can be treated before they have a chance to turn into a Cervical Cancer. If its detected early, Cervical Cancer is one of the most successfully treatable cancers. In the united states, the Cervical Cancer death rate declined by more than 50 over the last 30 years. This is thought to be mainly due to the effectiveness of pap test screening. Despite the recognized benefits of Cervical Cancer screening, not all american women take advantage of it. Most Cervical Cancers are found in women who have never or who have not had one recently. Women without Health Insurance and women who have recently immigrated are less likely to have timely Cervical Cancer screening. Cervical cancer deaths are higher in populations around the world where women do not have routine Cervical Cancer screening. In fact, Cervical Cancer is the major cause of cancer deaths in women in many developing countries. These women are usually diagnosed with late stage cancers, rather than precancers or early cancers.
