christmas decorations out! have a good day!today: windy, scattered flurries s gh: 32-38 winds: sw 15-25 alolo35 dbq: 37 iow: 37tonight: chance of flurries low: 25-31 winds: w 10-20 alo: 28 dbq: 28 iow: 29tomorrow: a waterloo family is back in their home this morning after a close call with high carbon monoxide levels in their home. late saturday night, two carbon monoxide alarms went off in the rental home at 17-32 mulberry street in waterloo. at first, all four members of the family thought it was just a failing battery. but when the alarm wouldn't quit, they called 9- 1-1. the fire department measured 74 parts-per- million of carbon dioxide in jari engle's home. normal indoor air should be 10 or below. a rusted-out exhaust pipe from thfurnace was causing the odorless, colorless and deadly into the home. engle said sattday night she had a splitting headache and figured it was a migraine. then the c-o detector started beeping. "i think what we've seen in the last two years is more customers areehopping online on ack friday versus standing in line outside or anything of that sort, with more retailers open on thanksgiving it really spreads out when people want to shop. " some small businesses are also trying harder than ever to tap into the online market. "really want to build that relationship continue some of the work that's been done, to build good rapport, communication, i'm the kind of person that likes to meet with people face to face, hear their issues, concerns and a chance to talk about what epa's doing. my perception is iowa's been a aeal leader in the nutrient reduction aggressive nutrient reduction strategy. we've been supportive of that movement. moving forward we want to be a partner with them and other federal l encies, academic institutions, state partners, and stakeholders." the iowa nutrient reduction strategy is a plan led by iowa state university.. the iowa d-n-r and iowa department of agriculture.. itstsoal is to reduce nutrients from point and non point sources to iowa waters and the gulf of mexico through voluntary measures. hague says he was encouraged about farmer practices at the iowa state fair this year.. "saw a lot of producers and farmers being recognized for the practices they're putting in place and that's really good and encouragagg to see that going g on. i know thehe state's invested a lot of resources to making that nutrient reduction strategy be realized and i think tere's a lot of value that can be gained there. you know when you hear about nutrients in iowa y y don't hear anyone arguing over the need to kind of make some changes and improve how we protect our water quality and encouraging see the work going on." hague has been serving as the region administrator since march.. ---- the grain markets are a little shocking today.. a rally going on.. meanwhile cattle aren't having such a good time.. have a good day!today: windy, scattered flurries high: 32-38 winds: sw 15-25 alo: 35 dbq: university of iowa officials are looking into a racist commentnthat someone carved i io campus property. president bruce harreld says they found it in a bathroom in the spence laboratories - which research labs. he says crews immediaaly sanded down the bathroom door to remove the comment. harreld told students, faculty, staff that quote "the act is offensive to our community and will not be tolerated." late last year, an assistant professor put this statue resembling a k-k-k member on the pentacrest. the professor said it was meant as a protest to the violence again black people. but some students found it offensive and authorities removed it. today voters in black hawk county will make the final decisions on some key city elections. they will choose mayors in waterloo and cedar falls. councilman quentin hart and former mayor tim hurley are both vying for the seat in waterloo. and mayor jon crews and businessman jim brown will be on the ballot in cedar falls. however, crews recently announced plans to step down and urged people to vote for his challenger. polling in the run-off elections is open from 7 the polling places are the same as they were in the city election in november. republican presidential andidate jeb bush will be talking to voters in easternn iowa today. he first will attend a coffee and donuts event at the university of dubuque. that will be in the heritage center at 8:30 this morning. then the former florida governor will go to waterloo fofoa town hall meeting. that event will be at the sullivan brothers iowa veterans museum at noon today. another republican presidential candidate is just now leaving the state after campaigning in iowa for a aew days. the latest quinnipiac university poll showed ted cruz in a statistical tie with republican front runner donald trump here in iowa. yesterday, the texas senator told supporters at the kirkwood regional center he's not attacking trump because he doesn't think trump will win the g-o-p nomination. he also talked about how he doesn't think any of thth presidential "i believe the central issue of the 2016 election is re-igniting the promise of america, getting back to that fundamental commitment that our kids will have a better life than we do and their kids will have a better life than we do." governor terry branstad says there is no reason to delay p pns to shift iowa's medicaid operation to private management. this comes after a judge recommended the state throw out one of four contracts awarded to companies to run the program. the governor says the state always planneneto have between two and four companies running the program. but he says the state has not decided how to move forward. the iowa medicaid program is set to shift to private management starting january 1st. thehe50 preschool stududts going to class in the linn-mar school district could one day be under one roof. as kcrg-tv9's jill kasparie reports district leaders want to make the change, but have not decided where. start of jingle bells from music to learning health-- these kids and their teacher are busy! ! nats of food conversation teacher melissa bray recently took on another assignment. she joined other parents and administrator s as part of the preschool advisory board. "the committee was formed in order to make an educated decision on what we think would be best for our district whether it would be to have preschoho classrooms s ay in elementary buildings or to have them be in a center-based program. we came to the conclusion that a center-based program would be our recommendation the district says that could become a reality in the next three to five years. with so muchchemand, there just isn't enough space in the kindergarten program. "linn-mar is a big, growing district and our preschool is growing at the same rate, and we always have large waiting lists." the district says while centralized preschool would also help with space issues in elementary buildings, school leaders say they wanted to make this decision based on what's best for the kids. "we have about 20 percent of k experience and those are the kids that we want totoeach." "i think it'll be great as far as the teachers having collaboration with each other, we hope to also have adequate space, the use of new technology, families to have a central location to go to." they want to keep these kids busy and learning foror brighter future. "in a one horse open sleigh hey!" that was tv-9's jill kasparie with that report. the district says it plans to work out the details - such as location and cost - in the future. an after school program now has a better way to help students get to and from that center. an anonymous donor gave the dububue dream center two school buses which volunteers can use to transport students enrolled in that program. the dream center director says the after school program help kids who structure when class lets out. but it's also away to engage and improve the neighborhoods. "for there to be a change and for people to understand one another. we need to build relationships with the families and the people who live in downtown dubuque. " the dream center is a non-profit organization that runs only on grants and donatis. directors say the two buses are someththg they never would have ever been to afford without that donation. the city council in iowa city will hold a public hearing in two weeks to go over plans for a controversial fiftete-story high rise building. according to the iowa city press citizen, the city council voted 5 to 0 to hold the public hearing to talkabout extending the chauncey project's deadline. two lawsuits attempting to block the project are in the appeal stage. they have significantly slowed down construction. the meeting will be on december 15th. starting today, people can use a new online historic properties in cedar rapids. the site has information on where they are and what characteristics t t properties have. the city will hold two informational sessions today at the downtown library at noon and 5:30 this evening. a saint luke's s ployee's dream as come true, thanks to her co-workers' efforts. more than 50 people raised enough money to send resa collier to disney world. she is a custodian at the hospital. friends say she brings joy to all of her co-workers and patients. after collier's father recently passed away, they wanted to do something to bring that joy back into her life. "the emotion, the happiness, they were my family because i had just lost my father, so they were my y w family and they had been with me through thick and thin theres just no describing how much love i felt." expenens-paid trip with her husband in october. someone caught the entire surprise on camera, and it's been shared all over social media. mercy medical center in cedar rapids is making sure all mothers are able to give breast milk to their babies. the hospital has started a new donor milk program. it offers donor breast milk to newborns who need the supplemental milk when their mothers can't produce it. the program has no income requirements, and it's free to all mothers. the hospital has purchased the milk from university of iowa health care's "mother's milk bank" of iowa. people in cedar rapids are starting out the month of december with a 2 and a haha-ton christmas tree in the city. a large crane pulled the city's new 35-foot christmas tree into its designated spot on mays island yesterday. a family donated the colorado spruce from their property in southwest cedar rapids. city arborist todd fagan estimates the tree is about 30 years old. christmas decorations out! have a good day!today: windy, scattered flurries s gh: 32-38 winds: sw 15-25 alolo35 dbq: 37 iow: 37tonight: chance of flurries low: 25-31 winds: w 10-20 alo: 28 dbq: 28 iow: 29tomorrow: a waterloo family is back in their home this morning after a close call with high carbon monoxide levels in their home. late saturday night, two carbon monoxide alarms went off in the rental home at 17-32 mulberry street in waterloo. at first, all four members of the family thought it was just a failing battery. but when the alarm wouldn't quit, they called 9- 1-1. the fire department measured 74 parts-per- million of carbon dioxide in jari engle's home. normal indoor air should be 10 or below. a rusted-out exhaust pipe from thfurnace was causing the odorless, colorless and deadly into the home. engle said sattday night she had a splitting headache and figured it was a migraine. then the c-o detector started beeping. " the salvation army isisffering an incentive to get more people to donate to its red kettles on giving tuesday. the non-profit says the manufacturin g company, apache inc, will double all the donations to the kettle at the wilson avenue hy-vee in cedar rads. the salvation army has collected a a ttle more thousand dollar goal. linn county residents are encouraged to share their participation by using the hashtag #givelenncoun ty. there are 24 shohoping days left until christmas. and many people turned to their computers and smart phones yesterday for cyber monday. the volume of online traffic caused some websites to crash. target's had twice the visitors it previously had on its busiest day. that caused the site to go down, only allowing a certain n nber of people to shoho on the site at one time. . er the weekend, neiman marcus, best buy, walmart, and ebay all suffered online issues. west music in coralville had no probems. the business handled five times the normal number of online orders. west music offered ten percent off online orders and free shipping all day. but one west music representative says cyber monday itself is starting to lose some steam with people online on days like black friday and even thanksgiving day. "i think what we've seen in the last two years is more customers areehopping online on ack friday versus standing in line outside or anything of that sort, with more retailers open on thanksgiving it really spreads out when people want to shop. " some small businesses are also trying harder than ever to tap into the online market. "really want to build that relationship continue some of the work that's been done, to build good rapport, communication, i'm the kind of person that likes to meet with people face to face, hear their issues, concerns and a chance to talk about what epa's doing. my perception is iowa's been a aeal leader in the nutrient reduction aggressive nutrient reduction strategy. we've been supportive of that movement. moving forward we want to be a partner with them and other federal l encies, academic institutions, state partners, and stakeholders." the iowa nutrient reduction strategy is a plan led by iowa state university.. the iowa d-n-r and iowa department of agriculture.. itstsoal is to reduce nutrients from point and non point sources to iowa waters and the gulf of mexico through voluntary measures. hague says he was encouraged about farmer practices at the iowa state fair this year.. "saw a lot of producers and farmers being recognized for the practices they're putting in place and that's really good and encouragagg to see that going g on. i know thehe state's invested a lot of resources to making that nutrient reduction strategy be realized and i think tere's a lot of value that can be gained there. you know when you hear about nutrients in iowa y y don't hear anyone arguing over the need to kind of make some changes and improve how we protect our water quality and encouraging see the work going on." hague has been serving as the region administrator since march.. ---- the grain markets are a little shocking today.. a rally going on.. meanwhile cattle aren't having such a good time.. ! nats of food conversation teacher melissa bray recently took on another assignment. she joined other parents and administrator s as part of the preschool advisory board. "the committee was formed in order to make an educated decision on what we think would be best for our district whether it would be to have preschoho classrooms s ay in elementary buildings or to have them be in a center-based program. we came to the conclusion that a center-based program would be our recommendation the district says that could become a reality in the next three to five years. with so muchchemand, there just isn't enough space in the kindergarten program. "linn-mar is a big, growing district and our preschool is growing at the same rate, and we always have large waiting lists." the district says while centralized preschool would also help with space issues in elementary buildings, school leaders say they wanted to make this decision based on what's best for the kids. "we have about 20 percent of k experience and those are the kids that we want totoeach." "i think it'll be great as far as the teachers having collaboration with each other, we hope to also have adequate space, the use of new technology, families to have a central location to go to." they want to keep these kids busy and learning foror brighter future. "in a one horse open sleigh hey!" that was tv-9's jill kasparie with that report. the district says it plans to work out the details - such as location and cost - in the future. an after school program now has a better way to help students get to and from that center. an anonymous donor gave the dububue dream center two school buses which volunteers can use to transport students enrolled in that program. the dream center director says the after school program help kids who structure when class lets out. but it's also away to engage and improve the neighborhoods. "for there to be a change and for people to understand one another. we need to build relationships with the families and the people who live in downtown dubuque. " the dream center is a non-profit organization that runs only on grants and donatis. directors say the two buses are someththg they never would have ever been to afford without that donation. the city council in iowa city will hold a public hearing in two weeks to go over plans for a controversial fiftete-story high rise building. according to the iowa city press citizen, the city council voted 5 to 0 to hold the public hearing to talkabout extending the chauncey project's deadline. two lawsuits attempting to block the project are in the appeal stage. they have significantly slowed down construction. the meeting will be on december 15th. starting today, people can use a new online historic properties in cedar rapids. the site has information on where they are and what characteristics t t properties have. the city will hold two informational sessions today at the downtown library at noon and 5:30 this evening. a saint luke's s ployee's dream as come true, thanks to her co-workers' efforts. more than 50 people raised enough money to send resa collier to disney world. she is a custodian at the hospital. friends say she brings joy to all of her co-workers and patients. after collier's father recently passed away, they wanted to do something to bring that joy back into her life. "the emotion, the happiness, they were my family because i had just lost my father, so they were my y w family and they had been with me through thick and thin theres just no describing how much love i felt." expenens-paid trip with her husband in october. someone caught the entire surprise on camera, and it's been shared all over social media. mercy medical center in cedar rapids is making sure all mothers are able to give breast milk to their babies. the hospital has started a new donor milk program. it offers donor breast milk to newborns who need the supplemental milk when their mothers can't produce it. the program has no income requirements, and it's free to all mothers. the hospital has purchased the milk from university of iowa health care's "mother's milk bank" of iowa. people in cedar rapids are starting out the month of december with a 2 and a haha-ton christmas tree in the city. a large crane pulled the city's new 35-foot christmas tree into its designated spot on mays island yesterday. a family donated the colorado spruce from their property in southwest cedar rapids. city arborist todd fagan estimates the tree is about 30 years old.
