talking about mitt romney, of course, who has been a fierce critic of donald trump in the past, and now he's in the running to be trump's top diplomat. >> also retired general michael flynn, now emerging as the front-runner to be trump's national security adviser. abc's janai norman is tracking janai, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mara. some big name republicans have been taking up time on the president-elect's schedule as donald trump makes the deepest dive we've seen yet into foreign policy meeting with japan's prime minister. from foes to friends, president-elect trump is making peace with former rival mitt romney, a republican who had some of the harshest criticism of him. >> think of donald trump's bullying, the greed, the showing off, the misogyny, the absurd third grade theatrics. >> mitt romney's made a total fool of himself. >> reporter: now an unexpected change. sources tell abc news trump is considering romney for secretary of state. among other candidates, another former rival, south carolina governor nikki haley, who was also vocal about her opposition to the then candidate. >> during anxious times it can be tempting to follow the siren we must resist that temptation. >> reporter: as trump's team works to get key players in place, abc news is learning lieutenant general michael flynn who's been a contender for national security adviser in the new trump administration has reportedly emerged as front-runner for the job. >> it's going really well. i mean, it's a great transition. >> reporter: trump also working to keep campaign promises about with the chairman of ford to keep the lincoln plant in kentucky rather than moving it to mexico. turns out the company never planned to move the plant to mexico. and newt gingrich is one person who apparently won't be playing a part in trump's administration. the former house speaker was a high-profile surrogate for trump during the campaign, but now he tells "the washington post" he won't serve in trump's cabinet in any position. kendis and mara. >> all right, janai norman live in washington. and these are busy times for donald trump meeting with japan's prime minister. it took place at trump tower and it was trump's first meeting with a foreign leader since being elected. >> afterwards shinzo abe called trump a, quote, trustworthy leader. trump's daughter, ivanka, and her husband, top trump adviser jared kushner, were involved. in the past trump has suggested that japan should contribute more to the cost of basing u.s. holding meetings on capitol hill. pence served six terms in the house which led house democratic leader nancy pelosi to say he'll be valued by congress because, he, quote, knows the territory. during a meeting with house republicans, pence took a group selfie and he told them they should be ready to work extremely hard. and tim kaine is making himself clear definitively saying he will not be running for president in four years. the former clinton running mate tells the associated press that his place is in the senate and that he plans re-election in two years. well, this morning's other big story, the deadly snowstorm impacting nearly a dozen states. >> the first major snowstorm of the year is now moving from the rockies to the northern plains. some areas could see 6 to 12 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. let's get details now from accuweather's justin povick. justin, good morning. >> mara and kendis, thanks. good morning to you. big snowstorm working its way states and look at our snow accumulations here by the time we get into late tonight. east of fargo along interstate 94, north and west, the twin cities, upwards of double-digit snow accumulation, some areas well over a foot of snow. the other big impact here, damaging winds which could exceed 60 miles per hour into the overnight. mara, kendis, back to you. >> all right, our thanks to justin and the weather problem in the southeast is the drought that's been fueling dozens of wildfires. moreha one official says he's never seen a fall wildfire season like this one. thousands of firefighters are trying to contain the flames which may burn until spring. the air quality is so bad, it's sending people to hospitals. dozens of people have been killed in a third day of air strikes by syrian and russian forces in aleppo. this heartbreaking video showing that it took four hours for rescue workers to pull a 6-year-old boy from the rubble of his own home after one of well, president obama is wrapping up the final european trip of his administration. this morning he's in berlin where he's meeting with chancellor angela merkel and other european leaders. later today the president will travel to peru, the last stop on his final foreign tour where cameras. it happened as crews repaired a natural gas leak that was caused by digging. one worker was killed and a dozen others were hurt. parts of downtown canton are still closed to the public. federal investigators now visitors from gorillas at the cincinnati zoo was not up to par the day a toddler fell into the exhibit. the little boy was not injured in last may's incident, but zoo officials were forced to kill an endangered silverback gorilla. investigators concluded that the 38-year-old barrier had become ineffective. breaking business news now. volkswagen workers are paying the price for the company's emissions cheating scandal. the auto giant has just 30,000 jobs as it struggles to recover from that scandal. most of those jobs are in germany. vw has already agreed to a memphis. turning now to other news, a washington state couple and their two youngest children headed out for a drive on tuesday and then they never came home. >> understandably other family members panicked asking for help to find them. after two long days, they got their wish. the family has been found and everyone is fine. abc's neal karlinsky has details on how they survived. >> reporter: jason and melissa mcalister along with their 2-year-old and 8-month-old daughters vanished on tuesday. this morning jason says the family van got stuck in mud while trying to go around a fallen tree stranding them. >> it got dark on us and so we spent the night on the side of the road after i made a shelter. >> reporter: thursday morning they heard on the radio that people were out searching for them. they ran into a local hunter who called 911. >> yeah, search and rescue has been looking for you guys for a few days. >> and you said they're dehydrated? >> yeah, a little bit, but they family of four is waking up at home healthy and thankful. >> everybody is good. god's great. and happy to be alive. >> reporter: neal karlinsky, abc news, seattle. >> incredible story there. and now to new york city where two men are facing murder charges in connection to the death of another man here in new york. 26-year-old joseph comunale was last seen alive last weekend while partying at a luxury manhattan apartment. now, police say that's where an argument broke out which led to comunale being fatally stabbed. his body found in new jersey on wednesday. now two men are charged with comunale's murder. one of them lives in the apartment where that party took place. >> and we do have breaking news to tell you about in the search for the son of michigan congressman john conyers. 21-year-old carl conyers, a student at the university of houston, was found safe just after 2:00 a.m. this morning. he had been missing since tuesday. he's being interviewed right now in houston. serving member of the house of representatives. turning now to a stunning video which has landed an arizona police officer on administrative leave. take a look at this video. it shows a flagstaff officer punching a woman in the face while arresting her. investigators say the officer claims the woman kicked and kneed him in the groin. flagstaff police authorities say the officer has no history of excessive force. they're promising full transparency in this investigation. a new warning about drug and alcohol addiction. it's taking a far worse toll a new report from the surgeon general says 78 americans die every day from opiate overdoses and 20 million suffer from substance abuse disorders. the study calls for a shift in the way we think treating addiction as a legitimate disease rather than a weakness
