today and tomorrow. we're going to check in with him later. so hang with us here. breaking overnight, one person is dead from a massive fire at an apartment building. we have an incredible rescue to tell you about. this was a 6-alarm massive fire at an apartment building on the upper east side of new york city. at least 12 people are hurt, including seven firefighters. video shows flames pouring out of windows and into the night sky. crews have the but they are still putting out hot spots. still no word on how it started. but a firefighter reportedly helped save a man who was trapped on the fifth floor with a life saving rope. to give you an idea of how bad it was, that rope burned in about 15 seconds after he and the man reached the ground. 12 days until election day, and today one of donald trump's sons comes to colorado. our shawn chitness is live covering the story for us. interesting. usually more republican ballots in early, but there are more democratic ballots in early this year. >> reporter: alan, that's right. certainly it's a good first indicator of where the state may be going. we know both campaigns have looked to colorado as a battleground state and that's why they keep sending big names and top members of their campaigns to our state. we will again see that later today as donald trump has his son in town. eric trump will be speaking lakewood at colorado christian university, of course trying to get out the vote for his father, as well as rallying veterans in the area. that event starts at 6:00 p.m. he is just the latest member of the trump family and the campaign visiting our state. vp nominee mike pence was in colorado yesterday, in colorado springs. the trump campaign released a map showing colorado as a battleground state, at least according to their numbers. leaning towards hillary clinton. as for the democratic nominee, clinton was last in the state at the beginning of the month. her campaign has also sent top names to colorado to try to get out the vote for her. let's look at the early voting numbers in from the secretary of state's office. a total of about 416,000 coming in. of that, 166,000 and change for democrats. a little more than 141,000 for republicans. again, at least as of right now, the early indication is for democrats. but the secretary of state's office giving us this daily snapshot, something we can keep tracking. tomorrow. i think we'll challenge that record. it's not as cold as it normally is this time of year for many locations, but you'll still need a jack this morning. 40s around the denver area. 30s in weld county and a combination of 20s and 30s in the high country. at the bus stop, plan on 40s for the most part. we'll call it a bit chilly for the end of october. again, we all know it can be so much colder. normally we're at 61. the record is 80. that was set 50 this date, 1966. we have 81 in the forecast. tomorrow probably even warmer than that. while we don't anticipate records for the weekend, it will stay far above normal. we'll talk about all this and how long the pattern should last coming up. now let's check the traffic. westbound along i-270, it's typically slow this time of day, so you add this on top of it, this is a look from copter 4, just crews picking up cones as they've been doing road work. police along there, and one lane. that will be nasty. i-270 and i-70. southbound coming down into town, speeds in the 60s. 9minutes from thornton to denver. westbound i-76 nice and wide open. it is starting to load up as you make your way into town. i-76 and i-270. across the denver metro area we've got a stall on washington at i-70. that's that yellow icon towards the center of your screen. and we have two lanes of northbound wadsworth closed at bayoud to the south of avenue. i'd take kipling or sheridan to get around that. for the latest traffic and cbs4 weather, you can turn on our partners koa newsradio the moment you get in your car. recovery efforts underway in central italy from a pair of strong earthquakes. new video shows the devastation. rubble now fills the streets there. the usgs in golden shows one of the quakes in italy carried a was about eight times stronger at 6.1. that is debris coming down. look at this building falling apart. aftershocks reduced this 15th century church to rubble. people lost power. they ran for cover. crews helped some make makeshift shte injuries, believe it or not. this, by the way, is the same region where strong earthquake hit in august, historic homes and buildings are just not earthquake resistant. 300 people lost their lives in that august earthquake. new this morning, wadsworth is back open from a deadly motorcycle crash near west 48th avenue. it happened around 8:00 last night in wheat ridge. the rider died. after 11:00 and we don't know what caused the crash. take a look at this, some cowboys are hoping to round up the rest of the cattle still missing from an i-70 crash. the truck was carrying the cows and it overturned on tuesday. cdot brought out cowboys to corral the livestock wandering near georgetown. >> the thing about moving cows is, it's not like in a cowboy movie. you move them real slow and wait until it looks like where they want to go and you tell them that's the right way to go. >> the sad thing is, some of the cattle did die crash. new photos of a man accused of throwing a coffee into a store clerk's face. it happened earlier this month inside the 7-eleven near yuma and alameda. police say the man walked inside, asked the clerk for a cup of coffee and threw it in his face. police say he also asked several customers to help him steal cars from a local dealership. police say he maced one person during his get-away. robbers broke into his home and got away with his super bowl l ring. but police nabed those men accused of stealing. officers arrested the 14-year- old and 31-year-old. police say they broke into ware's apartment during monday's game. fans helped police catch the men, by ware is thanking everyone. >> it's not about a material thing. it's about going through my stuff, in my house, and that's the main thing. so it don't feel like home anymore. i'm glad i wasn't in there. i would have sacked him. >> police say a crime storms alert generated multiple tips. a special report on the denver public school system coming out, it rates how well student achievement and how it the goal is to show where improvement might be needed. there is also a new report showing u.s. students are actually behind in science. the nation's report card from 2015 shows average scores are up 4 points in grades 4 through 8. however, unchanged for 12th grade compared to the 2009 report. this report shows only about a third of 4th and 8th graders demonstrate strong performances in the sciences. among 12th graders, just 22% are science. world series after going scoreless in game one, the cubs' offense woke up last night against cleveland. >> another base hit. >> how did he do it? only fourth game of the year, swarmer gets his second rbi of the year. chicago heads home for of the tied series after a 5-1 win in cleveland last night. 6:00 at chopper 4 this morning. it is a clear start to the day. mild temperatures, relatively speaking for this time of year. 46 degrees in denver. sun will be up at 7:22. if you look way up here you can see our waning crescent moon, visible because of the clear skies. from yesterday. we appreciate it. yesterday's high was 75. today we'll be about 6 degrees warmer than yesterday. that will put us at 81, which is record territory for this date. today and tomorrow the record is 80. tomorrow's high we expect 82. we'll not only break the record, almost shattering the record when we break it by 2 degrees. saturday, 75. not quite as warm for the weekend. but still far above normal. now 20s and 30s in the high country. 40s out we it's 42 in akron and 46 at dia. there is a chill in the air this morning. yes, it is the end of october with our relatively long nights. it gets chilly in the mornings. you'll need the jackets now. mid-morning, forget about the jacket. upper 70s to around 80 for everybody in the denver, boulder, and fort collins areas. let's zoom over to the west coast. this is where all the moisture is. it's northern california into oregon and washington. they're going to get soaked with rain in places like san the sierra nevada mountain range, up to a foot of snow in some areas, including lake tahoe. all our mountains hoping for the snow, but it's over there. here's why. they have a trough in california and we have a ridge here. it's because of the position of the jet stream, which is farther north than it is typically by late october. this pattern will hold through the weekend. a few changes next week means it won't be as norm. between now and then, far above normal, including co mid-70s with sunshine for the weekend. looks great for the broncos game sunday afternoon. and mild for trick or treating monday night, in the 50s and 60s. let's check the traffic. we've had problems. here's joel. especially along i-270. looks like they have some of that cleared out of the way. we've replaced the trouble with cars, a lot of them. i-25 and santa fe, live pictures, some of those, a lot of those cars out there. driver southbound coming into 92nd. ten minutes from thornton to denver. in the eastbound direction of i- 76 now starting to see slowing develop in a couple of different spots, and eastbound along i-270 typically slow. southbound along i-25 as you get to i-70 here, you can see traffic stacking up there. almost at a complete stop. across the denver metro area, had earlier trouble shot, off tohe northbound two lanes closed at wadsworth due to a water main break. left two lanes blocked off, so watch out for that. take sheridan or kipling. other big construction project is an ongoing one, through the day today as they continue to do work along stock exchange. >> reporter: today is the busiest day of earnings season. over 50 companies, including twitter, are reporting their earnings. the dow rose 30 points yesterday. nasdaq lost 33. the futures are pointing to a higher open. twitter, by the way, just released its earnings and it beat expectations. those shares are up about 5, 6% on the news of its wireless head phones. apple says it needs a little more time before they're ready. they were supposed to go on sale this month. no word when they'll be available. another commercial airline is putting money into private jets. jetblue is investing in one of the largest private jet companies, jet suites. they fly 30 passenger jets to the west coast. chipotle is opening its first hamburger joint today. tasty made. the first is in ohio. four items only, burgers, fries, shakes and soda. the burgers will be grilled it order. >> keeping it simple, keeping it real. thanks a lot. let's get to thursday's top stories. when investigators rescued a fort collins girl, the 7-year- old was malnourished. wearing a diaper, unable to walk or talk and suffering from seizures. it happened two years ago, her parents accused of abusing their young daughter. police arrested leah and douglas dyer two years ago. they told investigators they stopped taking her to doctors visits after she turned 3 because they didn't have a working car and didn't want to ask family or friends for any help. samsung now says 140 of its galaxy note 7 smartphones overheated or caught fire. samsung's president is apologizing, saying the company still doesn't know what is causing the problems. workers say it could take a long time to learn why they overheat. airlines and amtrak have banned the phones. so far, so good. the nuggets beat the new orleans pelicans last night to grab an opening night win. the manimal had a great game. then it denver went on to win 107-102. nuggets now face the trailblazers here at home saturday. we have new video of a tribute to the victims of the pulse nightclub shooting in orlando. orlando magic players wore a special t-shirt last night and displayed a banner in the rafters with number 49 on it, representing the with joel, because we've had major traffic problems this morning. it's a little bit of a brutal drive northbound along wadsworth through lakewood as water main break to 1st avenue. let me show you what we've got. your alternate is backed up to alameda now as you get to bell mar. you'll want to take alameda to sheridan, or out to kipling to access to 6th avenue this morning. but alan, you get northbound along wadsworth, the two left lanes are blocked off, and it's starting to back up. joel, thank you. 12 days now until election day. the latest battleground tracker from our cbs news shows only four states tossups now, florida, north carolina, iowa and colorado. shawn chitness has the latest on the campaign, and the ballots already turned in in colorado may tell one story. typically it's republicans that turn in the ballots sooner. >> reporter: alan, as you're hinting at, we're seeing it go the other direction, at least based on what we have in so far. all this happening as both campaigns considering colorado their top names into colorado to get out the vote. let's look at the numbers coming in as of yesterday from the secretary of state's office. a total of just over 416,000 votes coming in. democrats leading at this point, with a little more than 166,000. republicans just above 141,000. again, those coming from the secretary of state's office as they try to give us a daily snapshot of what's happening. here's what's happening for the trump campaign donald trump's son eric will speak at colorado christian university in lakewood. he's of course trying to get out the vote for his father as well as rallying veterans in the area. that start at 6:00 p.m. he's the latest member of the trump family and that campaign visiting our state. the vice presidential nominee for the gop, mike pence, was also in colorado down in the springs yesterday. trump's campaign believes towards hillary clinton and the democratic nominee was last in our state at the beginning of the month. but she continues to send some of her top names to our state as well, as we go closer to election night. the secretary of state's office plans to keep giving us that daily snapshot as we get instead, it's in northern wyoming. this is unusual for this time of year. this is more of a pattern in september, not late october, almost halloween. this pattern will hold in place through sunday, and it changes a little bit on halloween. won't be monday. still, above normal. in fact, we'll be in the 70s and 80s through the weekend. looks terrific for the broncos game sunday. kickoff temperature, 75. sunny all the way through the game coming up on sunday. let's check the traffic with joel. you said it will be raining in san diego. those are just tears. copter 4 showing the drive along i-25 making your way past santa fe this morning. on the way to arapahoe road, where we've got report of an accident in the northbound this drive. drive southbound coming into town, we have an accident in the southbound direction as you get to 84th. unfortunately, not our only accident. there's that one there. speeds into the 40s. not causing too many delays. ten minutes from thornton to denver. along the bottom of the screen, accident westbound direction of i-70, or i-76 as you get to i- 25. this is our cbs4 mousetrap cam, to give you an idea of the volume, it's moving to the north of i-70. south past it, not well. reports of a new accident westbound direction of i-70. you see that fill in there. at central park boulevard. once that fills up past i-225 then we start seeing backups northbound along i-225 itself. we've got an accident northbound direction of i-25 at arapahoe. we've got copter 4 heading that way. a marine veteran is hoping people in colorado can help him this is robert kugler. he spent time traveling the country with his dog bella. somebody stole his bike this week as veterinarians treated his dog for cancer. that bike is part of the ride 2 recovery it may feel like fall this morning, but it certainly won't feel that way later on today. the record for this date is 80. we have 81 in this afternoon. much more weather coming up. now let's check in with joel. traffic alert we're following. new accident northbound along i- 25 at arapahoe road. this is what it looks like now. it is blocking off a portion of that right shoulder. they've gone out to a wide shot, so you can see the flashing lights. it was under the bridge. another accident 17th and downing downtown, where we have a car that had gone into a the traffic along there. 3-car accident at central park boulevard. southbound coming into town another accident at 84th. speeds dipping into the 30s behind that. the other big issue we have northbound along wadsworth at bayoud, where we had an overnight water main break. they've got that repaired. but they've still got a lot of work to do. our jamie leary live from the location of this, south of 6th avenue. it will create a mess for drivers for the morning slow down here on northbound wadsworth. they've got two lanes blocked and they have a sign that is letting people know they need to merge where they've got that water main repair blocked off. but it seems as traffic picks up it's sporadic now, but as it picks up people are having a really hard time adjusting to merging. it's catching them offguard. be careful if you have to travel along wadsworth, i talked to the track management fill the hole and repave over it. they have a lot of equipment to bring in. they said it's more than likely it will last throughout your morning commute. and maybe even into the afternoon as well. so just be mindful, if you have to travel along wadsworth, this is your route you need to get into work, be careful. you have to merge. rescue from this deadly apartment fire in new york city. this fire on 93rd street on new york's upper east side tore through the building. one person died, at least 12 are hurt, including seven firefighters. but the story of an amazing rescue is also emerging. a firefighter lowered himself on a rope to a man on the fifth floor who yelled out he was burning. the firefighter was lowered over the flames, grabbed the a few seconds later, that rope burned through. new this morning, in response to police brutality accusations and community unrest, the denver police department is drafting a new use of force policy. this apparently ensures officers use the least amount of force necessary to quell problems.
