45 degrees in des moines, 39 in fort dodge and 42 in ames. currently having a break in the clouds. overnight had rain and now we have clear skies but a lot of wind. coming from the south with gus's closer to 30 miles per hour -- gusts 30 miles per hour. and it will be dragging in chilly air. temperatures will be falling and we are seeing are high temperatures for the day. expect snow flurries to work in across western iowa and roll through the central part of the state this afternoon. we have even colder days ahead in the forecast. eric: there are parts of central iowa dealing with the aftermath of the rainstorm. highway 169 north of adel has been closed due to flooding. we are told there is even more water over the road this morning. drivers should take a detour river levels are very high in des moines as well. the raccoon river at fleur drive crested at 17.72 feet. that's almost eight feet above flood stage. plotters are going back down, it is 16.9 feet. des moines city officials say because of the flooding, george flagg parkway and fleur drive will likely remain closed through the weekend. elizabeth: des moines police or investigating a deadly crash on the northeast side of the intersection of east 42nd and hubbell avenue before 6:00 p.m.. police say a man was walking erratically when he was hit by a car in the intersection and died. the driver that hit the man is cooperating with police and we are hoping to learn the name of the victim. same kcci on the air and online. eric: candidates clashed over national security and other hot nikole killion is in washington. nikole: this was the first debate since the attacks in san bernardino and paris which sparked heated expect -- exchanges over how they will tackle terror. a showdown on the strip. the scene of a helicopter crash in arizona. shaina humphries is following the developments. any word on the status of them? shaina: our sister station in phoenix reports to people on the helicopter were killed and a third in critical condition. and a crash in the homes east of phoenix. what caused the help this -- is on scene two examine what caused this to go down. a southwest airlines plane department of homeland security is expected to announce changes to the terror alert system. secretary jeh johnson says the u.s. needs a system that better informed about terror threats. the current system requires the new system would be similar to the bulletins the fbi uses to send information to law enforcement agencies. elizabeth: construction workers are closing out the year outdoors and on the job thanks to the warm december. as a result, one of the area's biggest developer says they are seeing record setting business. polk county data shows a spike in commercial and industrial permits over a three-year period.hubbell realty reports a record year for not only downtown construction but also single-family homes across central iowa. >> we put in a record number of foundations. single family foundations. he expect next year to be even stronger and we had a record number this year. elizabeth: hubbell realty reports they are currently building more than 500 apartments through six project in the downtown area. your input on alcohol policies at state beaches. the dnr officials say reports of rowdy behavior and excessive drinking have raised questions about banning alcohol on the states 56 beaches. officials are encouraging anyone with an opinion to go online and fill out a public survey. >> at a public beach if it's in the only one around for you can consume alcohol, it tends to draw a concentrated demographic of people doing that. want to make sure it is safe for the public. eric: there is no drafted their proposal that the dnr says public input will help you decide to do state. eric: in alyx sacks is taking a deeper look into how that impacts students. alyx: not only is the district ethnically diverse, it is also economically diverse. 100 different when witches are spoken and 75% of students are growing up in poverty. this creates a different dynamic and classrooms. and the school district in its curriculum. one says having some of diversity is a huge advantage, difference -- different, but with the positive causes challenges. >> we are challenged with having students coming to us not just in kindergarten particularly with refugees. we get students from all ages. many from middle school or high school were starting school for the first time in learning english for the first time. we know we don't have them where we would like for them to be by the time they reach graduation age, but we know they are way better off than had they not received services at des moines public schools. alyx: he says sometimes they excel more than they think is possible. so for drivers trying to get home from work. cars were sliding all over the roads with some getting stuck in snowbanks. parts of the denver area so nearly a foot of snow fall. eric: while tens of thousands of drivers in utah struggled to get around, 1/6-grader found a way to get to school. he braved the elements to cycle the one mile to his elementary school through the snow drifts. that's impressive without the snow. he said he did it because unicycling is simply faster than walking. i guess that sounds cool. kind of interesting. metinka: that is something you don't see every day. and there's no snow for us to do that to. 41 in des moines, 43 in ames. cooler temperatures are working in from the west so they have already set a high temperatures for the day and they will slowly fall through the afternoon. overnight we had drizzle and light rain move through. what is moving in will be a few flurries by noon time into the afternoon, not amounting to much at all but you may see a flake or two. gusty wind will be something we are dealing with through the end of the week so we will be tracking in cold temperatures. it will actually be feeling like the 30's. by sunday, temperatures warm up into the 40's and stay there for the first part of next week. elizabeth: there's bad news for iowa state basketball fans. senior guard naz mitrou-long is out for the rest of the season. eric: he is planning to buy for a medical redshirt there would give them another shot at the senior season next year. he had surgery on both of his hips the summer. he averaged 12 point and shows less than a sometime of -- some kind of holiday bonus or a pay raise. those nubbers contradict a previous survey that found 78% -- its employees a huge gift. they are giving more than 1300 workers a bonus of $100,000 each. five years ago, the ceo promised the bonus if they doubled the somebod -- the size of the company and they did. $100,000, that's awesome. elizabeth: we want to head over to metinka and we have decent temperatures. metinka: temperatures are starting out right but they will come later on. starting in the 40's and heading back to the 30's. it will be blustery and cloudy with a few flurries here and there so it will feel and look more like winter. we've missed out on most of this system that stay to the spreading into minnesota but you can see a little bit on the back edge. that will wrap through the state as a goes through the afternoon. overnight we have light rain and skies temporarily cleared but the clouds are rolling back in across southwest iowa so it will be another great day -- gray day. wind will shift to the west this afternoon and it will usher in cooler temperatures so that's the reason temperatures will fall later on today. that is generally around 30 miles per hour but sustained wind around 20 will be pretty strong today through thursday and even into friday. a blustery stretch of days, the reason why the system is heading out is the strong pressure difference ringing and gusty wind. tomorrow is a reinforcing blast of cold air dropping overnight low temperatures back down into the teens. and we have more passing flurries by friday morning. we are expecting little in the way of accumulation. by 8:00 a.m. we have flurries working their way and across raindrops early on. by 5:00 p.m. we could have flurries but even by 11:00 before skies clear out. in des moines, 41. a few clouds and the southwest wind at 18. watch for gusts this afternoon near 30. wind will switch to the west. temperatures this afternoon falling into the 30's and over the next couple of days, temperatures turn colder. thursday highs close to freezing with friday highs close to 30 if that. lots of sunshine going for us. overnight lows are cold with colder air is working in across the western half of the state. temperatures are starting mild but a gusty wind will dragon cooler temperatures. they will fall through the day with mainly cloudy skies would be part of the story like this and coming from a reporter who does this on a daily basis, six or seven times a day, you never think this will happen during a live shot. i was just glad they were able shaina: this morning, the suspect, ryan liskow is charged in both robberies. police say he used the same mo both times handing it out to the teller demanding money. eric: you go back to the same and i said but you are here. and they just smirked. eric: mike potter him says he felt bad for the tube was asking for money outside his business the one he offered them a job they turned him down twice. so he made a sign and join them on the street. the sign said offer these guys a job, they said no, don't give them money. with panhandlers, he just wants to make sure they do need the help. i saw that several times yesterday on facebook. elizabeth: one organization that needs help his make-a-wish iowa. the sudden shutdown of jolly holiday lights because of flooding means they will come up with $200,000 short of their fundraising goals. top executives from the iowa clinic, unity point, and mercy medical center started an online campaign called #bringthejolly and they encourage you to post a picture and challenge someone else to do the same. eric: three competitors joining forces, many accepting that challenge. here's a picture after they donated. one said it's not much but it's
