we'll have a little bit of light rain, light drizzle. temperatures today still -- today stay really mild. temperatures will start out decent and then fallout into the 30's. that would change the rain over into a wintry mix. we have a winter storm watch to talk about. eric: thank you metinka. millions of americans are expected to hit the road this morning for their holiday travel. but officials are warning to stay alert and vigilant, amid heightened concerns over potential terror plots. shaina humphries has the latest. what are law enforcement officials doing to keep americans safe this holiday season? shaina: travelers this week should expect stepped-up security at airports and train stations across the country. the tsa is advising to get to the airport even earlier, to allow for extra screening time at security checks. president obama will be briefed by his national security team this morning, as the fbi issues a new bulletin reportedly warning of potential copycats following the recent attacks in paris. officials do say though, there is no current specific threat, so they're urging americans to carry on with their travel plans as scheduled. >> what this is not saying is don't travel. we want americans to travel domestically, overseas. >> you have to live your life. you can't just live in fear, but it's a little scary. you know it it's going to happen it's going to happen, but hopefully, god willing, it won't. shaina: there is also a new app being rolled out in some parts of the country called see something, send something. that allows users to send in photos and notes to authorities about any potential threats. also happening right now, tensions are high in chicago. following a night of unrest triggered by a police-involved shooting a year ago. protesters clashed with police into the early morning, after graphic video of the incident was released to the public. it shows officer jason van dyke shooting 17-year-old laquan mcdonald 16 times. the officer was charged with murder tuesday morning, and remains in jail. and overnight, protests in minneapolis continued for a ninth straight night. they're demanding justice for the shooting death of jamar clark, by minneapolis police earlier this month. prosecutors say a grand jury will decide whether to charge the officers involved, with any crimes. meanwhile, police are holding three men who are accused of shooting at protesters monday night. five people were shot in that incident but all are expected to be ok. eric: thanks shaina. a kcci exclusive now, a sergeant with the missouri highway patrol says it's the agency's negligence that killed clive native brandon ellingson. back in may 2014, 20-year-old ellingson was in handcuffs in police custody when he went overboard on a patrol boat and drowned. former water patrol supervisor sgt. randy henry tells kcci, the highway patrol is at fault, but has been trying to silence his sgt. henry says the highway patrol hid key evidence during a coroner's inquest. and that the trooper that arrested ellingson, anthony piercy, should be facing criminal charges. >> should someone have faced criminal charges for what happened on the lake that day? >> yes, i believe so. >> what charges? >> manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter. i was part of the system. i signed off on tony piercy to work the water. >> you regret that now. >> yes, i regret it 100%. it's something i'm going to have to live with for the rest of my life. eric: meanwhile ellingson's father craig says the family's pursuit of charges in federal court is moving forward. representatives of the missouri highway patrol will be in iowa next month for depositions. elizabeth: the driver involved in a deadly des moines car crash monday morning, now faces multiple charges. police arrested 24-year-old troy lee mure jr. tuesday, as he was released from the hospital. officials say mure was drunk when he crashed his car into a utility pole in the 600 block of 35th street. 22-year-old scalicity perez was the passenger in the car, and was killed in the crash. perez's family tells kcci she leaves behind four children. mure is at the polk county jail this morning, charged with vehicular homicide by reckless driving, vehicular homicide by operating while intoxicated, and owi. eric: brendan mcginnis is expected to appear on murder charges. -- mozilla was shot several times earlier this month. again this is said to be arraigned this morning at a: 30. -- at 8:30. elizabeth: a colfax family needs your help this morning, trying to get their therapy horse back. take a good look at these pictures of buddy. denise carroll says the horse disappeared from her yard in rural jasper county overnight friday. she believes someone possibly stole him because he is valuable. the horse was donated to the family who has several special needs foster children. carroll says horses are incredibly healing to children with special needs. >> to be able to have an animal they can have a trust with and some control over and bond with is so good for them, and buddy was perfect for that. elizabeth: buddy was last seen at his farm between newton and colfax, south of interstate 80, in holiday. metinka: today is your getaway day, then you got some decent travel conditions. temps are above freezing. you don't have to worry about slick spots. 50 degrees already in des moines. today we will have some drizzle and fog develop. temperatures remain above freezing all day long. tomorrow? look at this wintry picture. we are going to begin with unseasonably heavy rainfall. potentially one to two inches of rain will fall on picks giving day. then it is could be changing over to a wintry mix. ice will accumulate. that will be followed by a little bit of snowfall. elizabeth: new college football playoff rankings are out, and the hawkeyes have done it. eric: iowa cracked the top 4 this week, after a win over purdue last weekend gave them an 11 and 0 record, and made them one of two remaining undefeated teams. here's a look at how things stand right now. clemson, alabama, and oklahoma are numbers 1, 2, and 3 respectively. then iowa at number 4. the rankings were revealed last night on espn after several re-votes specifically surrounding spots 3 through 6, so michigan state and notre dame are also teams to watch in the coming weeks. whichever teams are in the top 4 on december 6, get to go to the college football playoffs. if iowa does stay in the top 4, here's a look at their playoff schedule. number 1 would play number 4 in the orange bowl on december -- december 31 in miami. number 2 would play number 3 in the cotton bowl, also december 31 in arlington, texas. the winners of those games would move on to the championship game, january 12 in glendale, arizona. elizabeth: before we get there though, the hawkeyes will have a tough matchup this weekend though against big ten rival , nebraska. regardless of what happens in this game, iowa will play in the big ten championship game, but a loss to the cornhuskers could potentially knock them back out of the top 4 in the playoff rankings. kickoff is in lincoln on friday at 2:30 p.m. you can watch it on abc. eric: turning to the nba, it was a record-breaking night last night for the golden state warriors. point guard stephen curry led the team to a franchise record 27th straight home win, defeating the los angeles lakers 111 to 77. the win also made the warriors the first team in nba history to start a season 16 and 0. they are perfect. that beats the 15 win record previously shared by the 1993 houston rockets and the 1948 washington capitals. elizabeth: in a recent interview with people magazine, iowa olympic gold medalist shawn johnson opened up about an eating disorder she struggled with during her years as a gymnast. she says she always felt like she was too muscular and bulky and began to obsess about her weight. at one point she restricted herself to just 700 calories a day. a west des moines nutritionist says she appreciates johnson's announcement and says it was a tough thing to admit. >> this type of thing is very emotional and very psychological and she's in a good place in her life now and was able to talk about it and i sure do hope that it helps people. elizabeth: johnson says she began to feel better about gold-medal and eventually gained 20 pounds. good for her. day long. we have a winter storm watch that has already been issued that does not include des moines. we are expecting some rain, heavy at times. potentially some i speculation. -- some ice accumulation. shaina: thanks metinka. we'll have a rainy thanksgiving here in central iowa, but hopefully not quite this rainy. parts of the san francisco bay area are underwater right now. heavy rains and very high tides flooded several streets there, including parts of two major interstates. crews are hoping to have it all cleaned up as soon as possible so holiday traffic isn't affected. further west, that rain turned into snow in the sierra nevada mountains. reno around 10:00 a.m., and the higher elevations there were expected to get anywhere from 12 to 22 inches through this morning. the snow is making driving conditions there very dangerous, several crashes and rollovers were reported, prompting officials to issue travel restrictions in northern california and nevada. most of the area is under a winter storm warning until later this morning. and there are about 40,000 people still without power right now in spokane, washington. nearly 200,000 people there lost power last tuesday after a storm brought hurricane-strength wind gusts and knocked down dozens of power lines. another round of strong winds last night hindered efforts to restore power and brought down even more utility poles. right now crews say it's unlikely they'll get everyone's power back on before thanksgiving tomorrow. eric: thanks shaina. we're making our way into the holiday season, and starting today, the festival of trees and lights kicks off their fundraising efforts at the iowa events center in downtown des moines. elizabeth: alyx sacks is there now with a preview. we hear this is a record breaking year? alyx: it is a record-breaking year helping to inspire hope for all of the families that go in and out of the doors. they had a record attendance at the gala. they had a record number of trees. last year was a record-breaking year. they were able to raise $500,000 that goes to blank children's hospital. if you want to check it out, it is open as of today all the way through sunday. it is five dollars to get in. children under two are free. ere are a ton of things to come up and see. you can check the art and crafts. there is children's train, food offerings. you can shop. plenty of things you can look at. it feels like a winter wonderland and check out all of these trees that have been decorated with such care. each tree has come alive with so much character. there has been so much thought put into each and every one of them. it is going to an incredible cause. all of the money that is raised will be going to blank children's hospital. to benefit programs like child life. >> our ability to reach out to all 99 counties in iowa and provide services throughout the entire state those programs , wouldn't happen without festival of trees and lights. alyx: elizabeth: another sure sign the holiday season is here, jolly holiday lights opened for its 20th season last night at water works park. it's now open every night through january 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. tickets are $10 per car. 100% of the proceeds goes towards make-a-wish iowa. eric: a busy holiday shopping weekend ahead. black friday, cyber monday, and saturday, it's all about supporting local businesses. more iowans are turning to small business saturday as their day for holiday shopping. iowa state researchers say 5% more people will shop locally this year. ames business owners are some of the many across the nation that will participate this weekend. >> we are members of the community just like the customers are. by supporting local business you're supporting the people you love, the people that are your friends, the people that are your neighbors. eric: in ames, they will hand out 500 swag bags with coupons to shoppers this saturday. elizabeth: good deal. more economic headlines now, wall street closed mostly flat after a day of ups and downs on tuesday. the dow gained 19 points. the nasdaq added less than a point. and the s&p 500 was up about 2.5. earnings at u.s. banks rose more than 5% from july through september of last year. the federal deposit insurance corporation says that profits reached just over $40 billion. analysts credit the increase to a drop in legal expenses for the country's largest financial services companies. general mills is the latest company pledging to use only cage-free eggs. the maker of progresso soups and yoplait yogurts says the transition will take about 10 years to complete. mcdonalds and starbucks have also promised to stop using eggs from animals confined to cages. the labels on food products may be getting easier to read. lawmakers introduced new legislation this week to create a standard label for the front of all products, with calories and other basic nutritional information. the proposed bill also calls for a clearer definition of terms like natural and healthy. and if you're one of the -- eric: and if you're thinking about what to get someone out, that lets you buy stock shares right there on store released hours after the officer was charged with murder. it shows officer jason van dyke shootinghe boy 16 times. the state attorney's office said recovered from the scene. -- and protestors in minneapolis were out on the street for the 9th night of demonstrations. they are demanding justice for jamar clark, a black man fatally shot by officers earlier this month. since the shooting, five people were shot and wounded. three men are being held by authorities, accused of firing on protestors later monday. one of clark's relatives is calling for the protests to end. prosecutors say it will be up to a grand jury on whether the officers will be charged. students in brussels have returned to class after a two-day shutdown. special measures are being taken, the same goes in france where police have raided the home of a man said to practice an ultra-orthodox version of islam. the arrest is part of stepped-up measures under a state of emergency. elizabeth: this morning, millions of americans are expected to hit the road. according to aaa, nearly 47 million people will travel 50 miles or more this thanksgiving. their travels come amid heightened concerns of terrorism. don champion reports. don: on one of the busiest travel days of the year, there are visible signs of stepped up security. at major airports, tsa agents have been told to take their time while screening bags. at los angeles international airport, heavily armed officers now patrol terminals. a new intelligence bulletin sent to law enforcement around the country warns that there could be copy cats in the u.s. looking to replicate the paris attacks. the stepped up security even extends to busy train stations and travel hubs like penn station here in new york city. the nypd is also trying to protect the more than one million people expected to attend the iconic macy's thanksgiving day parade. officers wearing plainclothes will be in the crowd and radiation detectors will be deployed. commissioner bill bratton: i think what is clear what we're advocating is don't be afraid, be aware. don: the department has also rolled out a new counter-terrorism unit. york. elizabeth: at the des moines airport, there may not be armed officers at the doors, but there will be tighter security in place. david dailey: i am confident that our workforce is able to give travelers a good experience and they have the skillset and the technology and they're prepared to keep the traveling public safe. elizabeth: airport officials are advising people to come at least 90 minutes early, if not more. from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m. on wednesday, they expect workers to screen about 1,500 people. they say there could be more random screening as well. and officials are asking travelers to be aware and report any suspicious activity. the travel warning runs through february. eric: a kcci exclusive. brandon ellingson's death on missouri's lake of the ozarks was ruled an accidental drowning, but now a former water patrol supervisor is speaking out. sgt. randy henry: as soon as brandon ellingson got onto tony piercy's boat, i believe it was a death march. 20-year-old clive native was in handcuffs in police custody when he went overboard on a patrol boat and drowned. sergeant henry says the agency's negligence killed ellingson. ellingson's family hopes henry's account of what happened will help spur the 32nd year they posted this, the proceeds go to blank children's hospital to support programs that help children who go to that hospital with often life-threatening illnesses. you can shop, you can eat, check out all the trees. there's arts and crafts as well. we wanted to take the time to show you this special treat. each one of these heart ornaments represents a child that went into the care of blank children's hospital that passed away. it is a beautiful tree that remembers what this benefit is here for. they do support children in all 99 counties that come to the metro to receive chair
