to 60 degrees, not much wind. if you like these kind of temperatures, we have more on the way. the average is 63 but for the whole week ahead highs will be warmer than that. alyx: the republican front runners are throwing their weight around and pushing for changes to the next gop presidential debate, while democrats await the decision from vice president joe biden. weijia: the top two presidential candidates in the gop race have won a victory over cnbc. the network has changed its debate rules after donald trump and ben carson sent a letter saying, neither mr. trump or dr. carson will participate in your debate if it is longer than 120 minutes including commercials and does not include opening and closing statements. but not everyone agrees. ms. fiorina: i'm all for 3 hours. i'm sorry that they apparently don't have the endurance to go the distance. weijia: the other candidates may need extra time because trump and carson more than doubled their numbers in the latest poll. ceremony for steve brown, percy coleman, and kerry schneider was historic. they are the first state. jason rantala has more. jason: a proud moment friday as three fire captains are promoted to district chief. >> the end result was the most diverse and i would say the most skilled list i have seen in a very long time. jason: key word there being "diversity," something a little lacking in the des moines fire department's 132 year history. >> it's really important that the citizens of des moines can look at the fire department and other departments and say, that's possible for me. >> it's a pretty exciting time profesionally. jason: both coleman and brown see first hand the importance of diversity. >> it's important to have your public safety divisions reflect the community. >> it inspires people and it >> it's been something that i think every chief i've worked for has had at the top of their list. jason: sgt. paul parizek with des moines police says diversity has been top of mind for police as well, for seemingly forever. he says events like coffee with a cop, and cooperative work, like with central campus's criminal justice program, have helped. >> we bring in officers that come from these different communities and they have a little better knowledge of customs and those types of things that make the problem solving easier. jason: tekippe says part of the reason diversity has lagged, has to do with culture, in a field historically dominated with white males, often family tradition. now demographics are changing and it's about seeking out people with different backgrounds. >> people who are good people that we know that have a good interest in working hard physically. alyx: the fire chief says they make sure applications come from all different backgrounds year, the show creator says he has a permit and plans on only running the shows only on the weekends. >> i think we did it right this time. we went and got permits and talked to our councilman paul davis and made sure we crossed our t's and dotted our i's with everything. crystal: this year, the street is blocked off for safety reasons during the half hour show to keep the large crowd out of the
