Steve kccis Steffani Nolte is live in the newsroom to explain. Steffani the university of iowa is facing a federal civil rights investigation. Looking into accusations the school does not provide equal opportunities for female athletes. Court documents show the federal office of civil rights is investigating gender bias allegations. Including how the Iowa Athletic Department awards scholarships, allocates equipment, and schedules practices and games. If discrimination is found, the case could result in a settlement, requiring the university to change its policies and allocate more funds to womens sports. Four former iowa field hockey players filed the initial complaint that started all of this. They were angry after the school fired field hockey coach Tracey Griesbaum in 2014. Of player abuse. But many players were angry at her dismissal. And their suit cites several practices they allege are motivated by gender stereotypes. Griesbaum says she was fired because of gender bias, under iowa Athletic Director gary barta. Friday, the university of iowa released a statement. Saying, in part, the university of iowa respects the office for civil rights jurisdiction and will cooperate fully with the investigation. The ocr will conduct an onsite visit the week of april 11 to interview athletic administrators and coaches, a group of athletes from each sport, and to tour the facilities. A School Lawyer says she believes the investigation will show iowa strives to provide male and female students an equal opportunity to participate. Steve . Steve thank you. Polk county sheriffs deputies say a female driver lost control of her vehicle. It left the road and became a child, who was also injured, was taken to a des moines hospital. The crash remains under investigation. Stacey new details about that deadly fire in knoxville. 77yearold Patricia Henning was killed in the fire. Her husband of 58 years, ronald, suffered burns while trying to rescue her. The couples daughter says ronald has a long road ahead. And he has lost everything. Police officers in iowa wont be able to charge people for being drunk in public, if a bill is passed. Supporters of the bill say those drunk in public should not be hit with a ticket. Prom organizers say people with special needs often have to fight for equal treatment, so they deserve a night to feel special, themselves.
