to a drug complaint at the holiday inn off merle hay road. when they got there three suspects were in the lobby. >> their conversations did not last long before they ended up in sa struggle with one of the subjects who ended up pulling a gun. one shot was fired by him and our officers returned fire. rose: the man died from his injuries. two women left the area, but are now in custody. >> i think our people and the staff at the hotel last night did an amazing job. rose: the busy crime scene came as a surprise to this hotel guest, who asked us not to use his name. >> i asked the cop what had happened and he said somebody was shot. i guess its kind of weird not knowing it until i got up. rose: officers say there will be a long, extensive investigation. in urbandale rose heaphy kcci 8 todd: officials are not saying how many officers are involved. no names have been released. laura: new at 6:00. we've learned the name of the suspect involved in a shooting near drake university. police say 45-year-old reginald douglas fired gun shots into the air outside platinum kutz on university avenue. no one was injured but university avenue was shut down for a short time friday night. douglas is facing two weapons charges and a drug charge. video evidence in the case against a former des moines roosevelt high school girls basketball coach could be thrown out. gerald tig johnson is accused of having inappropriate contact with a student. des moines police tell us video evidence from the school district was corrupted. johnson's attorney filed a motion to have the evidence thrown out because johnson cannot get a fair trial. back in december, police charged johnson with sexual exploitation and assault to commit sexual abuse, after a student claimed johnson kissed and touched her. todd: also right now at 6:00. more snow moving into the metro tonight. jason, what can we expect over jason: snow is going to start following -- following -- falling. this will strengthen throughout the the goat" earlier this week. he escaped back in january while being transferred from a portable carrier to a vehicle. , a theatre group to tackle bullying. together, they're introducing an online bullying toolkit. it's called "hear", helping educators use art to reduce bullying. it's meant as an arts-related resource for teachers to help handle issues related to bullying. one of the lead researchers hopes the art-based program appeals to students' emotions. >> we want them to really focus on bullying, which is an emotional experience, and turn the communication toward a more positive interaction rather than bullying. laura: researchers say classroom-based programs on bullying aren't working very very well. she hopes the bully toolkit will resonate more with teenagers. todd: pope
