team. now alabama keeps pace in the west. still got that big match-up november 7 with l.s.u. could be for all the marbles and, of course, the tide rooting for a&m tonight with ole miss owning that over 30 injured after an out of control car drove into a homecoming parade in stillwater. a 25-year-old woman was arrested for driving under the influence. mason rudolph and j.w. walsh sharing the load at quarterback. the news went across the country and across the state. in norman, oklahoma, they honored the victims as well, flying the oklahoma state flag before facing texas tech. >> brian: sanders, and o'malley in des moines for tonight's jefferson-jackson dinner. but those candidates for president also brought some star power with them. todd: homecoming tragedy. 3 dead, 34 injured when a drunk driver crashes into the oklahoma state parade. who police say was behind the wheel. laura: what was once hurricane patricia is now a tropical depression as it moves out of mexico and in to the united states. how this record-breaking storm caused remarkably little damage. but first, the latest on a statewide amber alert for an abducted ottumwa teenager. the iowa department of transportation says they have located 13-year-old paige johnstone safe in georgia. investigators say kevin rivera as was headed to fort pierce, florida. the democrats who want to be president are taking center stage tonight for the jefferson-jackson dinner, being held at the iowa events center downtown. todd: and many places you look downtown -- signs. this one on a downtown skywalk for martin o'malley. others for sanders in right of ways all over downtown. but the bigger sight downtown are the pre-dinner rallys the campaigns are holding. laura: complete with crowds and star power. we start with kcci chief political reporter cynthia fodor. she shows us a clinton campaign rally, complete with gold-record rock stars and former presidents. cynthia: at the jefferson-jackson dinner event it, the rally here was all about rallying supporters. some say hillary clinton could not have done it better. a huge crowd gathered here at the hall. most could not believe a superstar like katy perry would perform a free concert right here in the middle of a parking lot in des moines. dressed appropriately in red, white, and blue -- draped in the flag. i'm totally took time off in the middle of her tour to volunteer for this. bill clinton: i want you to support hillary. because i want to break the ceiling. that women have had on the job of presidential spouse. hillary clinton: will you caucus for me? today, we have to get to work the next day to make sure that we carry iowa for the democrats in november of 2016. cynthia: after this, hundreds of supporters are lining up on 4th street along with katy perry to march over to the hall behind me for the jefferson-jackson dinner. that will start around 7:00. we will have full coverage of that for you on the news tonight. cynthia fodor, kcci 8 news. laura: bernie sanders is holding a rally of his own east of the iowa events center. todd: kcci's rose heaphy joins us live from the women of achievement bridge, where the sanders pre-dinner rally took place. rose: sanders supporters make plenty of noise here across the river. hundreds of sanders supporters made their way across the woman of achievement bridge toward hyvee hall, where he will be speaking tonight. at the rally today, several musicians performed including , one song about feeling the burn -- a phrase many supporters have picked up. sanders took the stage at about 5:15, firing up the crowd about for about five minutes. he spoke about raising the minimum wage. but most of all, for people, not the billionaires to come together. senator bernie sanders: people who do not believe the government listens to them. we need to bring those people together to stand up loudly and clearly. and say enough is enough! rose: sanders will be taking lking tonight at the jefferson-jackson dinner later tonight. he will be taking the stage along with clinton and o'malley. rose heaphy, kcci 8 news. todd: martin o'malley holding his own pre-dinner rally at 5th and center. the former maryland governor came from osage, where he attended a meet and greet concert, before coming to des moines to perform with local musicians at his rally. william o'malley: this is an introduction. this primary is just getting started. my dad will introduce himself to thousands of caucus goers tonight. we're going to build upon that tonight, and as it is closer to february, this is a great event. laura: according to this week's quinnipiac poll, clinton leads sanders 51% to 40%. o'malley comes in third with 4%. todd: iowa republicans say tonight might be the democrats' night to shine, but they're not worried about what the hooplah will mean for their party in november. rep. ken rizer: so as they try to put on their best face this weekend, iowa democrats are placed all of their eggs in one basket with a deeply flawed candidate. republicans, meanwhile are , laying the ground work to make sure we deliver iowa to our eventual republican nominee. re-elect senator grassley, re-elect all of our republican representatives, and color the state red in local races. todd: several gop candidates are spending their day in iowa campaigning during democrats' j.j. dinner. laura: including the republican's new frontrunner. this week's quinnipiac poll has ben carson leading donald trump by 8 points. this week's "des moines register" poll also has carson out front. about 600 people waited in line this afternoon to meet carson at the barnes and noble in west des moines. but his main reason for being there was not for a political rally. instead, he was there signing copies of his book called "a more perfect union." he did take some questions from the crowd, but most exchanges were quick, with just enough time to shake hands and snap a picture. we asked carson how he feels about now leading republicans in two polls. dr. ben carson: you know, i'm not going to get overly excited. because i realize that the election is still, you know, 13 months away. but i'd rather be at the top than at the bottom of the polls. laura: carson continues his book tour in iowa, making stops in waterloo and dubuque. todd: and in other news today fire investigators looking into , a fire that broke out at the copart salvage auto auctions at 3300 vandalia. it started around 4:30 this morning. we are told the fire damaged several cars and a building. but nobody was hurt. starting today, 12th street from grand avenue to mulberry will go from one-way to two-way traffic. drivers will be able to drive and park in both directions on that section of 12th street. pilot program the city is doing in advance of its upcoming walkability study for downtown. the pappajohn education center in downtown des moines. the fair featured 20 different organizations with something to offer iowa veterans, including educational opportunities and employment. the fair was free and open to all veterans. another drop in gas prices here in des moines. prices dropping to $2.29 a a gallon at many stations. prices had spiked several weeks ago, when several refineries slowed production for maintanence. but most have resumed their normal capacity. many energy analysts believe prices will drop down to $2 a gallon or lower by the end of the year. todd: a little sun and windy throughout the day today. so what can we expect this evening? kcci meteorologist jason sydejko now with a first look at your forecast. jason: we are going to have a pretty cool evening ahead of us, temperatures falling again to the 40's. a cool stretch ahead, but he was beautiful with the sunshine out there. we continue that stretch, too. northwest at 12. look across the state, you can see the clouds early on. as high pressure inches in from the west, it should build in plenty of sunshine next couple of days. as far as temperatures, those are going to stay around average. 60 is our average right now, 59 in des moines. mid-50's off to the north. settle in for the cool evening, we dropped to 51 by 10 p.m. we do clear out the cloud cover tomorrow, i will have more on how much sunshine and win our next shot for rain is, coming up soon. laura: 3 people are dead, 34 others were hurt when a car slammed through a crowd watching the oklahoma state homecoming parade. witnesses say 25-year-old adacia chambers first ran her car into the motorcycle of a police officer working security this morning. then she crashed her car into the crowd. authorities don't know if the incident was an accident or intentional. kyle: we treat these like we would any homicide and it will probably take several days to get additional information as to the cause of the accident. laura: chambers is in the stillwater jail, charged with driving under the influence. todd once believed to be one of : the most powerful storms on record, patricia is losing steam. but as you'll see, it's still causing lots of problems as it heads north into texas. laura: speaking of texas, iowa state dealing with a rainy day in waco, as well as the number 2 ranked baylor. the bears. announcer: this is iowa's news leader. this is kcci 8 news at 6:00 with todd magel, laura terrell, meteorologist jason sydejko, and sports with scott reister. todd: hurricane patricia has now been downgraded to a tropical depression. welcome back. now the remnants of the storm that blew through mexico are threatening to bring more rain to the waterlogged texas. area. laura: as kenneth craig shows us, a flash flood watch remains in effect for much of the state. kenneth: the roof of this car is barely visible. too much rain with nowhere to go in corsicana, texas. more than a foot of rain came down friday. streets were submerged, leaving many drivers stranded in their vehicles. >> i just think i could make it. i started freaking out. i called 911, and they were like stay there. kenneth: the relentless rain washed away tracks, causing a freight train to derail about 60 miles south of dallas. flash flooding also shut down a major highway between dallas and houston for hours. traffic was backed up for miles. south and central texas are preparing for another round of misery. remnants of hurricane patricia, which hit mexico as a category 5 storm, are expected to dump more rain on the saturated ground saturday night into sunday. saturday afternoon, officials also issued a voluntary evacuation order for residents in part of galveston county and are offering them transportation and shelter. >> we'll take it one hour at a time. if the tide comes in and the waves get biggerm we'll make a decision if we need to get out of here. kenneth it's not a question of : when the rain will come, but how much. kenneth craig, cbs news, galveston, texas. todd: a west des moines woman and her husband were in nuevo vallarta, mexico celebrating their 10-year anniversary when the hurricane swept through. stephanie ganske says resort staff said they need to evacuate. but later said it was too dangerous to leave, and they needed to stay and ride out the storm in their room. stephanie: i mean, i was really prepared for this might actually be it. i mean, i was really thinking that. and every hour that went by when it wasn't getting bad out, i was just thanking god. that, oh my god, we might get through this. it's going be ok. laura: a sunny way to end the day. jason is in now with your forecast. jason: we saw the sunshine make its way in. that will be here for a while. we saw fog, drizzle, rain -- that is a thing of the past. this is out at iowa stonehenge -- what carol calls it. look at the skies, very clear out there. we will be sitting here for a while. satellite and radar showing clouds to the east, some trying to move from the south. before now, areas in central and westward to you to see clear skies. that will be the case for a bit. look downtown, 59 degrees is what we're sitting at in the metro. that brees out of the west at 12 miles. that will be on the decrease to the evening hours. backing the temperatures down to 40 degrees, so a fairly chilly start. 64 is what we top out at, the average is 60. along with that, plenty of sunshine. a wider look with things, you see the rain that pushed off. that low pressure system continues to track to the northeast. and high-pressure moves from the we do have some cloud cover on the backside of this. i do not think there is a whole lot that will make its way into the weekend. plan on an absolutely beautiful one out there. next week, this is the remnant of patricia moving into the gulf and nearly straight northeastward. we could very likely get clipped with the backside of the reign as it moves northeast. still a lot of variables in play, talking about next week. plan on a beautiful weekend. the futurecast keeps all the stuff out of here, some clouds off to the north. and we do see clouds make their way in by monday evening. besides that, wonderful. 40 degrees and i, a bit chilly. backup in the mid-60's tomorrow, the picture[no audio] and if that is not enough, we do get it on monday. starting off mostly sunny and working in some clouds headed into the evening. the next shot for rain will role in tuesday evening, that is with that remnant of patricia. still not totally clear what the exact track is. if that pushes to the east, not as much rain to go around iowa. colder temperatures as we had to the holiday. 30% chance of rain, hit or miss at this point. but looking fairly warm at 61 degrees for your halloween. laura: scott joins us now to talk about iowa state. scott: no support from todd and laura. wearing baylor green.
