schools were locked down as a precautionary measure. they were lifted about 9:00 this morning. west des moines police have released the name of a man who was struck and killed monday night in the 7000 block of ashworth road. they tell us richard carson was hit and killed while crossing ashworth. police say the driver did not violate any traffic laws at the time of the accident. new at noon, roads across this morning following another snowfall. plus re-freezing lead to a few more accidents. like this car that spun out along i-35 and morningstar. blowing snow also a factor decreasing visibility and adding more snow to plowed areas. and a check on the very latest road conditions across the state shows that things are clearing up here on central iowa and down but high winds, blowing snow and dropping temperatures all making travel hazardous to the north. and that's where we find our vanessa peng. she joins us live now from randall in hamilton county. our things improving? vanessa: so far we've not seen much improvement. we are on 6090 randall. -- 69 near randall. you can see the snow blowing all across the road. visibility is low as well. as we travel hear from ames we took 69 northward. it was slick. the car was moving all over the place. been there were a lot of drifts of snow. all the snow -- we will continue to drive slow. not a lot of cars are here. we will keep more on what we can expect this afternoon. jason: we have continued wind. it will not be stopping anytime soon for us. we've seen gusts upwards of 40 miles per hour. out of the northwest absolutely 35 miles per hour in des moines. that is helping to drop the windchill temperatures down considerably. sitting in the teens and 20's and a lot of locations. feel like temperatures are widespread into the single digits. very chilly day out there but thankfully we did see that snow stopped before some locations picked up quite a bit early run. we at des moines sitting at 2.5. 1.6 inches overnight. never exist to a total of 4.1 inches. we continue to see the gusty winds throughout the rest of the day. they eventually lighten tonight and the temperature drops to 18 degrees. we will have more on a very sunny and warmer forecast coming up shortly. mollie: parts of the south bracing for more severe weather in -- just a day after being hit by storms and tornadoes. mississippi and alabama suffered extensive damage tuesday as twisters tore apart homes and david begnaud has more on that. >> it's in the water tower. reporter: at least 12 tornadoes reportedly toward to the southern u.s. tuesday. this one touched down in mississippi and made its way all would alabama. leveling homes in leaving a path of destruction that stretched across both states. in ranging county, mississippi firefighters rescued at least eight people from rising floodwaters. >> i seen the light coming down this road and i knew we would be ok. reporter: they hit is a tornado hit their home. >> we survived by the grace of god. reporter: the tornado that hit collinsville, mississippi river to part the first baptist church. the pastor told church ever see her the tornado sirens blaring and rest his family to safety. he loaded his wife and son up into this white suburban and pulled alongside the church thinking the wall of the building would help protect the vehicle. the family praised inside the church with a hidden under a desk. the same storm that fueled tornadoes in the south created blizzard-like conditions across the plains. a whiteout condition and southwest minnesota prompted a travel ban while more than a foot of snow fell in parts of nebraska. there are no reports of injuries or deaths related to the tornadoes in the south. as for today from tallahassee north to delaware the real threat is flash flooding. cbs news, mississippi. mollie: turning to commitment 2016 news. the bernie sanders campaign has asked the iowa democratic party to re-verify the numbers from each precinct. hillary clinton was declared the winner of the iowa caucuses by a razor-thin margin of 49.8% to bernie sanders' 49.6%. that all came down to one precinct, number 52. the votes were missing until yesterday morning so clinton passed. it -- the iowa democratic party chair said she make sure every vote was counted over she called it. but now the sanders campaign is asking for further clarification. >> it was making sure we aired on the side accuracy. --erred on the side of accuracy. we look at them in nature it was 100% done. >> make sure that all the numbers arrived. look at the paper from each precinct to make sure it matches what was sent in. mollie: the clinton camp released a statement yesterday saying that "statistically there is no outstanding information that could change the results and away senator sanders can overcome secretary clinton's advantage." in the meantime several republican presidential , candidates are launching new attacks against their opponents as they try to gain supporters before tuesday's primary in new hampshire. and the field just got a little weijia jiang reports from manchester, new hampshire. reporter: donald trump is alleging that ted cruz won the iowa caucus by committing fraud. he tweeted, " ted cruz did not win iowa, he stole it. that's what all the polls were so wrong in what he got far more votes than anticipated. that." -- bad." he says the looking into the explosion that led to the death of a 55-year-old man that was sucked out through the hole in the planes fuselage. jonathan vigliotti has the very latest. reporter: cell phone video and vehicles at specific times and places. the request was made to the cabinet today. bill cosby is back in court for day 2 of his effort to get the sexual assault case against him dropped. at issue is an unwritten promise of immunity that a previous cosby's now-dead lawyer a decade ago. cosby is accused of drugging and violating a former temple university athletic department employee in 2004. health officials in texas are investigating the first known case of the mosquito-born zika virus transmitted in the u.s. they say the person likely contracted the virus after sexual contact with an infected person who had traveled to venezuela. health officials say that would change the paradigm of the quickly spreading epidemic. the virus has been linked to a rare birth defect in thousands of babies, mostly in south america. the governor of michigan is expected to propose today that the state provide $30 million to help residents of flint pay their water bills. others say michigan should fully cover water bills instead of just a portion. the acting chief of the epa has told congress that the flint crisis was avoidable and that state officials had resisted calls to deal with it. very skies tonight and tomorrow as well. we do have some sunshine in the forecast if you can believe it. we have to wait until tomorrow to actually get there. it will be a chilly weight as our -- wait as our windchill temperature state above and below zero depending on where you are at. that wind is on the backside of this system now. you can see these thin black lines. they are called isobars. this whole thing will continue to shift eastward. you can see those close together bars are not so close together anymore. that will mean a lightning of the wind -- lightening of the wind. we have chances of actually getting our average temperature of 33 tomorrow. you can see clouds continue to clear as we head into the evening tonight. we do bring in some light cloud cover tomorrow as the system begins to pass to the north of us. i don't think we see anything out of this but we do have a chance at a little bit of sunshine and eventual cloud cover as a moving to the evening tomorrow. winds do eventually lighten. we are talking 20's, 30's, even 40's. we are down in the teens tonight. there is a lot -- a relaxing of the winds for us. it will be a chilly one. 13 tonight. feel like
